It seems that the so-called “Patient’s Bill of Rights” is in critical condition. The reason? President Bush is insistent on removing or modifying the sweetheart provisions inserted by Democrats – and Georgia’s Republican Charlie Norwood – for trial lawyers.
This is a tough P.R. battle for the GOP to win. Most Americans simply cannot understand that these $5,000,000 punitive damage caps and liberalized rules for filing lawsuits are nothing less than blood in the water for trial lawyers. The Democrats understand it though, and they know this will drive many employers out of the market for employee health insurance.
Do you know what sound a Democrat loves? The sound of a constituent calling to complain that his employer has just eliminated his health insurance benefit and demanding some action from government.
“Step into my parlor, said the spider to the fly.”
