After having a raelly pissy three days or so, I got brought up really short last night. The encounter made me smile and did an awful lot to wash away the emotional detritus of the three days before that.
I was out delivering pizzas like I do most Friday nights and I was having a pretty bad tip night. I had two folks nearly in a row hand me checks with a one dollar tip already written on them, thus indicating that no matter how well or poorly I did, they'd already decided to screw me. I had to take money back to a lady because she was unhappy with her pizza, costing me more precious time. I was not happy, and I was in a hurry, too. It was a busy night and was in "hustle mode".
So I took this order up to the door and I saw this kid peeking out of the window. He opened the door and had a smile on his face so I smiled back and asked how he was. He said he was great now that dinner was here. The order came to $15 and change and he got a real serious look on his face. He handed me a couple rolls of change. He apologized for giving me rolled-up quarters but that it was his "savings" and that I could count it if I wanted. I smiled and told him that I didn't need to. All I needed to know was how much he had given me. He said "18 dollars. The rest of it is a tip for you, Sir". I thanked him very much and told him to have a great night and to enjoy his pizza. And I smiled all the way back to the store.
Isn't it cool how running into a person who is considerate and polite can really turn your night around?
