What's in a name, eh?

The labels used to describe Americans of African descent mark the movement of a people from the slave house to the White House. Today, many are resisting this progression by holding on to a name from the past: "black."

For this group — some descended from U.S. slaves, some immigrants with a separate history — "African-American" is not the sign of progress hailed when the term was popularized in the late 1980s. Instead, it's a misleading connection to a distant culture.

Senator John Kerry's husband Teresa is an African-American:

African American always bothered me as a term as it insinuates that they're not "Americans" but "African Americans". It's presumptive to assume where someone is from based on the colour of their skin.

That all said, though, I try my best to be respectful of other people's desires. If someone wishes to be referred to in a certain way, I'll try my best to use that.

when WHITE students from South Africa applied for schlorships at College's

and got them

they were expelled when it was known they were WHITE

By logical conclusion, whites shall now be known as European-American.

According to Juan Williams, "welfare queen' and "food stamp peeps" are euphemisms for "African American"

Are Americans from Jamaica African-Americans? Haiti? Dominican Republic? Trinidad?

Y'all are kinda dumb...

They, by virtue of their own designation, have decided they are not "Americans," but "different" Americans.

All Americans are different. It's just that there is a white majority that takes the mantle of "Americans" and identifies with little else. People in the minority may either keep their racial/ethnic identities while also being full Americans, or they can identify as simply American as well.

Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Trinidad are located where in the world?

Bullshit.

Another one of your well though-out arguments.

Wait, aren't you an elderly American? And a Veteran? You don't sound like a full American to me. You're a "different American". You're in this minority subsection and not part of the mainstream. Gross.

Maybe we should vote on what rights we'll let you have.

I'll tell you what: next Jamaican you meet, you just keep calling him "African." He'll love that.

The treatment of black folks as "different" started way before the 1980s.

I suppose the point of this thread is that people of African descent are the only Americans not permitted to take pride in their ethnic heritage? I'll spread the word on St. Patrick's Day.

Am I the only one in this thread with access to a map?

Your map doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is how people choose to identify themselves. My wife's mother is Jewish and calls herself a a Jewish-American and has a tremendous Jewish identity. She's not from Israel though, nor are her own parents.

My brother married a second-generation Palestinian woman. But I've never heard anyone in her family refer to themselves as Palestinian-Americans or Muslim-Americans. They're just Americans. Even her dad who speaks with an accent refers to Lebanon as "the old country" and no longer associates himself with it.

So it's personal choice. Maps mean nothing.
