Soldiers of Sobriety

Lines that I have crossed
Boundaries that are gone
So many battles lost
But still the fight goes on

A wounded soldier wakes
To face perils of the day
But before a step he takes
He bows his head to pray

For peace to come inside
All those who fight the war
Who have no place to hide
But the foxhole of their core

Then he dons his armor
He’ll need to face his foe
He knows she is a charmer
Armed with deadly bow

His steps will not retreat
When engaged in fight
And he might face defeat
But knows his cause is right

When this battle’s over
And he sees the fallen men
Left lifeless in the clover
On a battlefield of sin

He’ll hang his head to cry
Mourn departed friends
Who had the will to try
To make their last amends

The war will start anew
When the sun will rise
As all but just a few
Will surely meet demise

The battle always wages
When the enemy is addiction
Yet a sober hunger rages
If fighting with conviction

Lines that I have crossed
Boundaries come and gone
The fight is never lost
If the soldier will hold on

"Alcoholism became
my religion.
And I have not prayed,
today."
