As the sun rose slowly over the mountains it shone down on an army camp whose occupants were already up and about, most of them getting prepared to do their basic training. All of them had been here for two weeks and already they were looking forward to the end so that they could get out to the field. One squad lined up on the parade ground just as the drill sergeant, Kurt Rogers walked out and looked at them.
"So....you grunts think that you can be soldiers do you! You have to be the worst group of cadets that I have seen and I have seen alot so I know that you will never make it!"
One of the cadets in the line sighed and the sergeant turned on his heels, looking straight at the cadet, "And just what are you sighing about boy! Do you think that you are the best!"
"No Sarge....I don't."
"That's good to hear Pvt. Andrews, because you aren't even close to the best- you have a long way to go. Now that this nice little chit chat is over it is time for a nice little stroll through the country side!"
Every one of the cadets knew instantly what that meant, they were going for a run. As they started out the leader of the cadets Marcus Walker ran alongside Private Andrews and said, "God Emil I swear that the Sarge is such a tightass you wouldn't even be able to shoot him in the ass with a Rapier."
Private Andrews began to laugh before looking Marcus and said, "Don't even joke about that Marc- he is trying to train us."
"Train us hah....he is trying to bully us- that is all."

Just as Emil was about to answer an entire squad of cadets came running towards them as if in a panic and before either group could stop they slammed into each other and fell to the ground. Both groups began to get up instantly and as they did Marcus looked at a person from the other group, "What that hell do you think you are doing, running into us like that!"
"We- we have to get back to the base."
"Why?"
Before the cadet could answer the comm system of the base came to life.
"ALL CADETS ARE TO RETURN TO THE BASE IMMEDIATELY.... REPEAT ALL CADETS TO RETURN TO THE BASE IMMEDIATELY"
Marcus didn't say another word, he just looked at Emil before they began running towards the base. As soon as they were inside the base compound they saw every cadet running towards their barracks. Suddenly Sergeant Rogers appeared out of nowhere and shouted, "Get to your barracks now!"
Without saying a single word the squad raced into the barracks with Sergeant Rogers closing the door behind him. He walked to the front of the barracks, "Shut up and listen you grunts. At 0600 Earth time today our moon was totally obliterated."
A loud gasp was heard from every member of the squad. One of the squad members, John Russell spoke, "How is that possible, nothing we can make can destroy the moon. And who or what destroyed it?"
"As of now all that we do know is that the moon has indeed be destroyed and that the shot that destroyed it came from the Calthi system. High Command has decided to send a recon force out to that sector of space. But what I can tell you is that we are on a high state of alert."
"But what do we do sarge."
"You all do nothing, you train and pray to god that we are not going to war. You are all dismissed."

OOC: Oops, forgot to tell you about my character. Forgive me- stupid mistake on my part.

IC:
Name: Private Marcus (Marc) Walker
Nickname: Ghost
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 210lbs
Age: 20
Description: Is a natural leader but gets himself into trouble more often than not. A bit of a jokester, tries to make people laugh whenever possible. Is just a cadet so not much of a military career or knowledge yet but is good a martial arts and is an expert marksman.

OOC: Well, that is enough about the character. On with the story.

IC: As the squad of cadets walked out of the barracks, still in shock they looked up at the sky to see a blank spot where the moon had been only eight hours before. As they looked up at the sky none of them knew what adverse effects this was going to cause.

It had been two weeks since the destruction of the moon and the Coalition High Command had learnt what the adverse effects were. Everything was going haywire, the tides were effected, there was now no natural light at night and the gravity was playing up for some unknown reason. It was agreed that Earth was totally unliveable and that there was a plan for everyone to leave. Several countries did not believe what they were told and decided that they were going to stay much to the orders of the High Council. As the preperations were being made news came of the recon mission to the Calthi system.
In the main hall of the council several personnel of the mission were recounting what had happened.
"They were on us before we even landed sir. We never stood a chance. The Calthi have a new weapon, some sort of large, strange mechanical spider. Several of them were on us and totally decimated us in just under an hour.....only a few of us were lucky to get out of there alive sir."

As they watched the view screen several of the cadets gasped, if seasoned soldiers were decimated in under an hour what was going to happen to them. They were mere cadets and now that it looked as if they going to go to war with the Calthi. Their training had been sped up and they were probably going to go out to the front line. They all looked at each other, not knowing what to say.

The squad walked into their barracks in a solemn mood just to see the commanding officer of the base standing there. They all looked at her, knowing what she was about to say.
"Cadets, I have to tell you this as it would be best coming from me. I know that your training is not yet over but the war, we can now call it a war with the Calthi is not going well. We are losing more soldiers than we have reinforcements and the High Command has ordered that every cadet nearing the completion of their training is to go to the front lines."
Marcus stood at that moment, looked at the commanding officer and said, "Colonel, we are not ready. We saw what happened to the troops on the Calthi homeworld, what is going to happen to us if we go out there."
"I realise that you have legitimate fears private but we have no other choice. I have your group assignments in my hand and the only good news is that you are not getting broken up....I wish I could say more."

Each member of the squad got their assignments and their eyes widened when they saw that they were going straight to the outer rim of the system, to the station Talthos to meet their new commanding officer in about two days from then.

The squad sat in seats and looked out into space as the shuttle took them to the station Talthos. None of them knew what to expect when they got to the station - their commanding officer was a mystery to them, they didn't even know what his name or the sergeant's name was.
While the shuttle continued to fly towards its destination Emil got up off his seat and walked over to where Marcus was sitting. He tapped Marcus on the shoulder who looked up from his palm reader and said, "We are not ready for this Marc, we are still just cadets."
"No, we are soldiers Emil," Marcus said. "And we have to be ready for this because if we're not then we will get killed in our first fight."
"But- but-" Emil began to say.
"No buts Emil- there is nobody else and that is the worst thing I have heard in a while."

Suddenly the pilot's voice came over the comm unit, "We are coming up to the Talthos station. I will try to make the landing as smooth as possible."
The pilot took the shuttle into the main landing bay of the station and landed so smoothly that the squad didn't even know that they had landed until the main door opened. The entire squad got up out of their seats as if they were one person and walked out of the shuttle into the landing bay to see that their new lieutenant and sergeant were standing there waiting for them.

OOC: If someone would like to join in could they please be the lieutenant as I can only write as one character. All that I can say is that he hates the idea of being the commanding officer of a squad of cadets and that he is a hard man to get on with- has somewhat of a grudge with the Calthi for some reason (who ever writes the character can figure out what it is.)

OOC: I guess I'll start the part of the Lieutenant myself and if somebody would like to join in please do.

IC: Lieutenant Matt Thomas stood there and watched as his new squad walked towards him. He turned to his sergeant, "I can't believe that I have to babysit a bunch of rookies. They should have given me a better squad than this."
"I don't think that they could give you a better squad Lt, this is all that they had left."
Matt didn't say a word, he just turned and looked at the squad who was standing there looking at him and said, "Right, I am Lieutenant Matt Thomas and this in Sergeant Cali Townes. I know that you are not ready to be on the front line and I don't know why I have to babysit you but I will tell you this, if you let me down just once I will leave you on the battle field to die. Do you get me."
"We get you sir!" every member of the squad said.

OOC: I have a bit of news- the sergeant of this squad is a woman. I thought that it would be a nice change for once so if anyone would like to be this character please be her but first I have to get my character in trouble.

IC: After Lieutenant Thomas finished talking Marcus looked at the new sergeant and couldn't believe his eyes. She was a beautiful; surely she can't be our sarge he thought. He turned to Emil, "Boy, would I like to jump into a foxhole with the new sarge."
That caused Emil to have a sharp intake a breath which caused Lieutenant Thomas and the sergeant to look at them both.
"Is there anything the matter Private. Something you would like to tell me."
"Sir, it was my fault. I said something that caused him to almost laugh. Forgive me," Marcus said.
"And just who are you?"
"Private Marcus Walker, ID number 9476398 sir."
"So Private Walker what did you tell him that was so funny, I am sure I would love to hear this...." Lieutenant Thomas said.

Before Marcus could reply Sergeant Townes walked up to him, leant forward and whispered in his ear, "It will never happen private so just forget it."
She walked back to stand beside Lieutenant Thomas with a smile on her face, leaving Marcus standing there confused.

Suddenly an alarm began to sound and everyone looked at Lieutenant Thomas who was listening to whatever was coming to him over his earpiece. He looked at the squad and said, "So much for the pleasantries- go and get you damn gear you babies. The Faleac outpost is under attack and we are going there to assist. Well, what are you standing here for- move it!"
The squad followed Sergeant Townes into the armory and picked up their weapons and body armor. They got into them and were standing in front of the shuttle in record time. Lieutenant Thomas looked at them with a small smile and said, "Everybody on board. Now I get to see how well you were trained."
The squad raced onboard and strapped into their seats holding their Acram 32 rifles in their hands. The shuttle lifted up off the floor of the landing bay and flew out of it, following the three other shuttles.
While the shuttle flew towards the surface of the planet Lieutenant Thomas looked at each face and said, "If you screw up in any way down there then I will either kill you or leave you there."
"We won't fail Lt," Marcus said.
Lieutenant Thomas said nothing, he was intent on whoever was speaking to him through his earpiece. Suddenly there was a bump and he said, "Okay, now lets see what you can do!"
The loading doors of the shuttle opened and the squad rushed out just to be met by a large group of the Calthi spiders. As they rushed towards them the squad raised their weapons and squeezed the triggers, sending tracer fire straight towards the spiders. The tracer fire slammed straight into the spiders but did nothing as the large things continued straight on towards where the squad stood, still firing their rifles.

Suddenly Lieutenant Thomas shouted out, "Don't you idiots know what to do?! We have to get the hell out of here!"
The squad then turned and ran in the direction of the outpost, firing at the spiders that were following close behind. As the squad came up to the top of a hill and the outpost came into view one of the squad members slipped on a patch of loose stones and began sliding down towards the Calthi spiders. He began to shout out as he slid down which got the attention of the Lieutenant and Marcus. They both turned and looked to see the soldier sliding slowly down towards the waiting spiders. As they watched him slide Lieutenant Thomas said, "He is done for- there is nothing we can do for him."
"To hell with that!" Matt said as he braced his rifle against his shoulder, pumped the grenade launcher and fired a shot straight at the lead spider. The grenade slammed straight into the spider and knocked it to the ground causing Marcus to shout out with joy.
"I wouldn't celebrate kid. You only brought him a little time."
A scream then came over their head phones and Marcus looked down quickly just in time to see the soldier being skewered and then lifted up off the ground with a large spike. Marcus just stood there, not knowing what to do until Lieutenant Thomas walked forward, raised his rifle and fired a shot which hit the soldier in the head, blasting it apart. He then turned, leaving Marcus standing there looking down at the body of the soldier getting ripped apart by the spiders saying, "Oh my god, John."
"Grow up kid. If you don't like what I did then you are no use to me. Do you get that kid. Now get your shit together and follow me to that outpost."
Marcus stood there, still not knowing what to do until Lieutenant Thomas shouted out, "Hurry up kid or I'll leave you behind."
Marcus stood there and watched the lieutenant as he began to walk off then hurriedly followed him. When he got close to Lieutenant Thomas he said, "Sir. How do we know that they can't get up that hill."
"They can. But with their size it will take them a while and hopefully we will be at the outpost by then. Now shut up so that we can get there."
Marcus just looked at the lieutenant before they both joined the squad and marched towards the outpost.

When they reached the outpost they saw that it was a complete mess. There were blast marks everywhere, corpses lying everywhere and a few spiders were lying on the ground in front of the walls. Lieutenant Thomas ordered the squad to stop then ordered half to go into the outpost as a recon team and the rest to look outside the outpost.

[Edited by Angelius on 11-06-2000 at 01:12 AM]

As the recon team entered the outpost they noticed the sights of a battle in the outer hallway area. As they got further into the outpost they saw that there were lots of blood stains everywhere but no bodies.
One of the squad members, Greg Dickson looked at Sergeant Townes and said, "Where are the bodies. There has been a blasted battle here but there are no bodies in this part of the outpost- what gives."
Sergeant Townes looked around and was about to answer when there a voice came over her headphones, it was Lieutenant Thomas, "-would you mind getting out here! We are in a little spot of trouble!"
Sergeant Townes turned to the rest of the recon team and told them to get outside on the double. They turned and ran out of the outpost, turned a corner and began firing as soon as they saw what the other team was up against.

The group of spiders that had met the squad at the shuttle was now rushing towards them at a great speed. Everybody raised their weapons but before they could squeeze the triggers a missile flew over their heads and slammed straight into the middle of the spider group which destroyed one of them and damaged two more. The squad decided to open fire to add to the confusion that was happening. They fired straight into the now slower spiders with their grenade launchers. The grenades slammed straight into the spiders and blasted holes into their structure, causing one of them to fall to the ground.
The squad then heard a noise behind it then a voice over their headphones say, "Well, don't just stand there. Get your collective asses in here!"

The squad turned and rushed into the outpost to see another squad standing there waiting for them, weapons raised. Before anybody could say a word a spider rushed towards the entrance just to be blasted by everyone standing in the hallway. When the spider fell to the ground the lieutenant from the other squad said, "I don't think that it's safe here. Let's get to better quarters."
A door then opened in the wall behind them and the two squads walked through and down the stairs as the door closed behind them. The two squad walked down the stairs and as they did they heard a whooshing sound. When they reached the bottom of the stairs there was another door with a scanner above it.
The lieutenant of the other squad looked at Lieutenat Thomas and said, "You can take your helmets off now, it's safe."

As soon as they had taken off their helmets Lieutenant Thomas looked at the lieutenant from the other squad and said, "What the hell happened up there, it looks at if they hit this place with such a force that they were hoping to wipe it off the face of the planet."
"They were, and I'll show you why," the other lieutenant said.
"Before you show me Lieutenant can I have you name," Marcus said.
"I didn't know that a private could be so forward but my name is Lieutenant Alex Ross. I got here with my squad just as this place was being attacked but when I saw what was down here I knew that it had to be defended."

When Lieutenant Thomas and he squad walked into the large room they were shocked and amazed. In the middle of the room was a large fusion generator and all around the generator were cots with a lot of people laying in them.
Lieutenant Thomas turned to Lieutenant Ross and said, "What is this place. What are all these people doing here."
"Well, from what I can gather alot of these people are the wounded from the other outposts. You see there are tunnels connecting every outpost."
"Glad to learn that fact now," Marcus said under his breath.

Everyone looked at Marcus who said nothing as he knew that he would hear about it from Lieutenant Thomas later. He looked around as the squad followed Lieutenant Ross through the large room and past the generator. As they walked past Lieutenant Ross was talking to them, trying to explain what was so important about this place.
"-this place can not fall Lieutenant Thomas. It is too important because if this place falls then the planet falls and the Calthi have a foot hold on our system."
"But what makes this outpost so important," Lieutenant Thomas said.
Before Lieutenant Ross could answer a door in front of them all opened a a general walked out.
"Attention on deck!"
After they both saluted the general ordered the squad to stand at ease while he told Lieutenant Thomas to follow him.

Liuetenant Thomas followed the general into the room he had come out of with the door closing behind them. As soon as the door closed the general turned to Lieutenant Thomas.
"Matt, so good to see that you are still alive."
"Thank you, dad. I'm glad that I am still alive myself."
The general looked at Matt with a smile but soon that smile disappeared and he began to speak, "Matt, I am glad that you are here. The Calthi have invaded Pluto in large numbers and are trying to take over the plant. If they do then they have a foot hold in the system and that we can not allow. We have to destroy them or drive them off the planet. And I want you to lead the main force to destroy them. Can you do it son."
