I read an article the other day where they said that constant soft drink users are more likely to have weaker bones, just wondering what are people's views on this or has anyone else seen that article?

i havent seen the article, but supposedly anything carbonated isnt good for you.. the carbonation slows down your blood flow some (or speeds it up, i cant remember).. and it creates some form of space or something between your fat and your muscle making it harder to reduce fat if you're trying to lose weight (or get in shape)

i dont think they're bad for you other than that.. especially if you take care of yourself in other ways (i.e. taking a vitamin daily, drinking your milk, etc.)

Oh ok

OK the article had said that its not conclusive evidence but it kinda went along the lines of what you are saying, just find it kinda interesting...........

It basically leaches the calcium from your bones. This is esp. true for women who have a family history of osteoporosis. Please if you are a woman get a baseline bone density scan done in your thirties and follow up with it. Sneezing and fracturing your ribs is not fun and is very painful.

Women be careful

everyone take care, i guess it has more of a probable effect than i thought.........and i will be the first to admit i love soft drinks

from my experience...

...if something is delicious and/or fun, it's probably not good for you.

wait so you saying sex isn't good for you?? :D

sorry i just had to say that

I read somwhere recently that the ingredients for coke have to be carried in a tanker with a hazard place card for explosive/corosive substance. talk about scary hell i quit drinking soda right then.

on that note...

Flouride is toxic in large quantities. I certainly hope no one stops brushing their teeth.

What I really want to know is, does the milk in a White Russian count?

while i think a white russian is a horrible waste of vodka, i'd count the calcium.

P. Cowgirl, it is however a great way to get your daily dairy and fun too.

Claim: The acids in Coca-Cola not only make it a handy household cleaning product, but harmful to drink as well.

Status: False.

Example:
1.In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2.You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.

3.To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl . . . Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean.

4.The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

5.To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

6.To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

7.To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

8.To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan;rap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

9.To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, And run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze fromyour windshield.

FYI:

1.The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It's pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days.

2.To carry Coca Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material place cards reserved for Highly Corrosive materials.

3.The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years! Drink up! No joke. Think what coke and other soft drinks do to your teeth on a daily basis. A tooth will dissolve in a cup of coke in 24-48 hours

Origins: Many of the entries above are just simple household tips involving Coca-Cola. That you can cook and clean with Coke is relatively meaningless from a safety standpoint -- you can use a wide array of common household substances (including water) for the same purposes; that doesn't necessarily make them dangerous. The fact is that all carbonated soft drinks contain carbonic acid, which is moderately useful for tasks such as removing stains and dissolving rust deposits (although plain soda water is much better for such purposes than Coca-Cola or other soft drinks, as it doesn't leave a sticky sugar residue behind). Carbonic acid is relatively weak, however, and people have been drinking carbonated water for many years with no detrimental effects.

The rest of the claims offered here are, in a word, stupid. Coca-Cola does contain small amounts of citric acid (from the orange, lemon, and lime oils in its formula) and phosphoric acid. However, all the insinuations about the dangers these acids might pose to people who drink Coca-Cola ignore a simple concept familiar to any first-year chemistry student: concentration. Coca-Cola contains less citric acid than orange juice does, and the concentration of phosphoric acid in Coke is far too small (a mere 11 to 13 grams per gallon of syrup, or about 0.20 to 0.30 per cent of the total formula) to harm anyone, no matter how much Coke he guzzles. The only people who proffer the ridiculous statements that Coca-Cola will dissolve a steak, a tooth, or a nail in a matter of days are people who have never actually tried any of these things, because they just don't happen. (Anyone who conducts these experiments will find himself at the end of two days with a whole tooth, a whole nail, and one very soggy t-bone.)

The next time you're stopped by a highway patrolman, try asking him if he's ever cleaned blood stains off a highway with Coca-Cola. If you're lucky, by the time he stops laughing he'll have forgotten about the citation he was going to give you.

Scary thought

So the conclusion is "coke" is bad!
I am a Pepsi drinker myself.
Seriously......I would take water before anything else.

BTW- I hear drinking too many soft drinks can cause Kidney Stones? true or false?

I dont know I used to drink a case in 2 days and have never had a kidney stone so I dont think so but I may be the exception.

From a natural health standpoint (which i have loads of books on) the phosphates from the sodas leaches the calcium out of your bones. This is what causes the brittle bones.

Also, the caffeine and coloring really screws up your kidneys. i used to drink a lot of cokes when i was in high school. When i went to get on the pill, the doctor took a urine sample. When the nurse came back she asked me how many colas i drank every day. When i told her, she told me that if i wanted kidney stones i was going about it the right way. Needless to say i quit drinking so many of them. i may drink three or four a week now.

Mountain Dew?

Lowers sperm count? If so, I'm in DEEP SHIT!!!!!!!!

Since I was young, I remember being taught that excessive carborated drinks are bad for the kidney. I even have a cousin who spent a long time on a kidney machine. But after 25 + years of drinking Coca-Cola and other drinks, it hasn't bothered me yet. I'm still a Coke addict.

If you want to be safe, don't put anything into you body unless you know it's origins and stick with things that are as close to to it's original form as possible (ie chicken with a bone vs chicken nuggets, barley, oats and wheat vs bread or pasta, a piece of fruit vs fruit juice etc.) but most of us live in the world of McDonalds and macaroni and cheese and of course Coke.

If you eat that crap with the full knowledge of what it does to your body then.. hey it's your body live with the consequences whatever they may be.

Free will is a great thing.:)
