No argument. I was responding to the statement regarding poverty which Johnson's Great Society and the War on Poverty were to correct. And as to the Republican abdication of reason on the welfare budget, that's precisely why I cannot support them, the lack of moral integrity.Originally posted by lavender
There is a difference between social security and what you are discussing. Additionally, over the years there have been numerous attempts at welfare reform. Granted, the system has been inefficient in many regards. However, the Republican controlled Congress actually tweaked Bill Clinton's welfare reform package and was much more liberal in their version of reform. I truly think Clinton's stricter idea that increased job training was a profitable and more workable solution to welfare.
If it's ludicrous and irrational in your opinion to declare that money taken from me coercively and given to others is theft, then you're merely illustrating the accuracy of my point which you call condescending below.Originally posted by lavender
It is ludicrous and irrational to refer to welfare as merely theft, corruption and graft. Although there are many loopholes to the welfare system and there are opportunities for corruption, the entire system is not dictated by theft. In fact, there are numerous individuals, many who are currently prosperous and give much back to the community who at one time received the benefits of welfare. Additionally, welfare is needed in many instances in order to counterbalance the Republicans moral platform. I know as a libertarian you do not agree with this Republican ideal; however, the same men who abhor abortion and believe that women should be forced to carry to term want to abolish welfare or decrease welfare for single mothers. These are the same people who don't want condom distribution in schools and who do not advocate increased sexual education that deals with reality because only abstinence should be discussed. Where is the logic and realism in those political beliefs?
I make the rash presumption that you accept the tenet that Communism is a variant of collectivism. In that case, the graduated income tax system, inheritance tax and wealth redistribution are fundamental tenets of communism spelled out by Marx and Engels in the Communist Manifesto. What does it take for you to accept reality? Or are you so coopted by the Left's rhetoric that reality is whatever their whim desires?Originally posted by lavender
UncleBill, you are echoing the paranoid sentiments of Ayn Rand more and more these days. We are not becoming a collectivist state. Our freedom is not going to be taken away. This is truly extremist rhetoric. I'm glad you can carry the flag of freedom in such a puritanical way. However, I think what you advocate is only your version of freedom. It's as if economic freedom for the wealthy is placed on a higher field than any other freedom for individuals in this country. There are many lucrative states in this world that have a far larger social welfare system than our great nation. In fact, name one nation that is truly less collective than the United States that has shared in its success?
My reference was not to Condit or Clinton. The pitfall of assuming what is intended. Especially when the two reprobates were never mentioned in the thread.Originally posted by lavender
You call this logic Miles. This is just UncleBill's futile effort to try and bring issues such as Clinton and Condit's moral terpitude into a debate that has little to nothing relevant to that issue.
Interesting how telling the truth about the Left is condescending, a vicious personal attack or some other such easily discredited castaway. You keep saying there is all this inconsistency in the objectivist/libertarian philosophy but you have yet to identify any of it.Originally posted by lavender
Very condescending, UncleBill. I love how you do it in such a flowery way. I, personally, find many of your political beliefs to be inconsistent. It's just a personal opinion on both of our parts. There are numerous philosophers that advocate capitalism and yet they see the inherent contradictions within objectivist/libertarian philosophy. Speaking for the Left, we do NOT embrace the collectivist tenets. That is illogical. In fact, I support the United States sytem. However, there is no such thing as true or pure capitalism. It's just like the Soviet Union or China did not demonstrate pure communism. These are utopian states that cannot be actualized.
