The 2017 Tax Plan Eliminates Deduction for Losses from Wildfires, Other Natural Disasters

Blowback against the proposed elimination of deductions for personal losses caused by natural disasters surged as wildfires ravaged southern California.
Provisions in the 2017 tax reform bill that would eliminate or restrict tax deductions for personal losses in natural disasters came under criticism in early December as devastating wildfires raged out of control in southern California.
Not only librul Californicators lose out. Next time tornadoes, hurricanes, nor-easters, polar vortices, supervolcanoes, tsunamis, big quakes, and/or plagues of locusts devastate your red region, just... tough it out. Eat your losses. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. What, your boots are gone? Steal some.

sorry, but every time i hear the phrase "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" i feel compelled to post this video now.

where are evacuees going? i cannot imagine how bad socal is right now.

That is terrifying. Are you ok? You, and all Californians here. Holy shit.

I'm glad you and your family are safe, Luke. Be well, man.

Thank you, Animal. We're trying but all of the fun stuff like Xmas parties and parades are canceled. Schools are closed "until further notice" due to air quality issues.

Catalina Island!

That island has good weather for a total of 2 weeks a year.

It's fucking insane. I hope you and yours are safe.

You! My family has been lucky but many of my friends lost everything.

I have been wondering where you've been. Thank you and good to see you bumpin' around.

I've seen so many videos...it's hard to watch and breaks my heart. Truly. I'm happy y'all are safe.

I'm good! School is whipping my ass. I'm too old for this shit.

That's every summer up north....lucky you guys don't have a whole lot of fuel to burn down there.

Stay safe though, don't try and drive through or even near that shit it will vapor lock your car and cook you alive.

Will the fire jump that far?

Mebbie. That fuck jumped 4 freeways, jumped a highway to burn down beachfront houses, left some neighborhoods with what seems like "only" every other house being chard and still blazin'.

Yeah, I remember seeing some of the footage of the Ash Wednesday fires here in Australia. Fires were jumping across the several hundred meter wide fire breaks like they weren't even there. I can only assume that the cali fires are just as bad.

Also, some advice for anyone who is in the path of the fire: run. Don't even try to stay and protect your home, fires like this move so fast that you will be surrounded before you even realise that the fire has caught up to you. Just grab whatever you need and get out as fast as you can. Most people who die in fires in Australia stayed behind to try and fight the fire or spent too long getting ready to leave. And if somehow you end up surrounded, head for the nearest water source and get as much of your body underwater as possible. It's also important to keep track of the fire at all times so that if you do leave, you don't end up running into the fire elsewhere.

It's only been two months since the devastating Sonoma-Napa fires, where my old Santa Rosa neighborhood died fast. And just over two years since the huge Butte fire (Amador and Calaveras counties) almost forced us out -- we were just 1/2 mile from a mandatory evac zone. This is relevant:

California's Climate Emergency

Fires continue to burn Southern California, and climate scientists have warned us for years that the region was entering a year-round fire regime
For years, climate scientists have warned us that California was entering a year-round fire regime. For years, climate campaigners have been wondering what it would take to get people to wake up to the urgency of cutting fossil fuel emissions. For years, we've been tip-toeing as a civilization towards a point of no return.

That time is now.
As the largest of this week's fires skipped across California's famed coastal highway 101 toward the beach, rare snowflakes were falling in Houston, all made possible by a truly extreme weather pattern that's locked the jet stream into a highly amplified state. It's difficult to find the words to adequately describe how weird this is. It's rare that the dissonance of climate change is this visceral.

That one of California's largest and most destructive wildfires is now burning largely out of control during what should be the peak of the state's rainy season should shock us into lucidity. It's December. This shouldn't be happening.

The Thomas fire is the first wintertime megafire in California history. In a state known for its large fires, this one stands out. At 115,000 acres, it's already bigger than the city of Atlanta. Hundreds of homes have already been destroyed, and the fire is still just 5 percent contained.

In its first several hours, the Thomas fire grew at a rate of one football field per second, expanding 30-fold, and engulfing entire neighborhoods in the dead of night. Hurricane force winds have produced harrowing conditions for firefighters. Faced with such impossible conditions, in some cases, all they could do is move people to safety, and stand and watch.
This is horrible. And the end is not in sight.

No rain means it will be here through Christmas. Good grief.

Happy to hear you and your family are doing okay. I didn't realize how bad it was until I had friends start checking in as okay, and America's song has been running rampant through my head.

I hope the rain comes sooner than it is expect to.

Also, I want a GoPro and a drone to attach it to. My neighbors are not that exciting...don't judge.

How many fire-affected southern Californians today have wished and or hoped others "die in a fire" in the past? Carma?
