So what do you think of this whole rating thing?

I seem to remember this from before I started posting here but it seems to have popped up again in the last few days. I don't like it. I think it's daft and encourages an atmosphere of competitiveness, which has been refreshingly absent from this community.

What do you reckon? I'm going to pm ShyGuy and ask him to bin it, but I wondered what everyone else thought. Should it stay or should it go?

I understand the desire to post a rating, in order to compliment someone, but at the same time, a rating can be posted in order to insult someone as well. I personally don't care if I get rated, or however that works, but there are some on this forum who tend to let their self-esteem ride on what people think. And I think having a rating system, as subtle a thing as that is, might have a negative effect on people.

It's something we can do without.

We all have different tastes and each person will find the person or people that are beautiful and sexy to them, and hopefully just avoid the threads that are not their cup of tea. I'm not sure that rating threads like some kind of pageant is condusive to that ethos.

I asked Laurel if there was a reason the rating wasn't turned on, since somebody asked me about it. She have turned it on on my request, but I'm going to make this thread a sticky for about a week, and then I'll have a look at the result, and depending on that it'll either stay, or I will ask Laurel to turn it off again.

So I suggest that everybody vote!!!

I was surprised when my thread was rated and a bit flattered, but we really don't need popularity contests on Lit. The tiniest thread deserves as much respect and admiration as some of the big, long lasting threads.
And everyone who has the guts to post pics on here deserves 5 stars IMNOHO.

I don't think we need to rate the threads because one person is liked or isn't liked they can be voted a low rating, but have quite a bit of people scanning their posts and pictures. We do not need a rating system of this kind.
