So, there I was, eating fish and chips...

Oh the horror. Did you save it? Dollops are rare these days, y'know.

Like tomatoes, hate tomato ketchup!

HP, or Morrison's own-brand Spicy Brown for me.

For fish and chips - Kristian's, North Shields Fish Quay. Sublime!

It was. It was quite, quite terrible. Yes, I caught it in my napkin.

Tomato sauce? On fish and chips?

Is this some extra-special British bit of arcane culinary secret? I like mine just peppered (maybe salted)...occasionally with some ketchup (unless that's what you meant, since what is ketchup when you get down to it but a form of tomato sauce?)

No vinegar for me though, malt or not...<shudder><cringe><gag at the very thought>

Yep, battered, greasy and covered in tomato sauce and generous helpings of salt and vinegar. Us Brits know how to eat proper, we do.

Mushy (marrowfat) peas, cooked to a pulp, then shaped into a little cake-shaped thing, covered in batter and deep-fried. Delicious. :D

Might be good...depends on the flavor of the batter and oil used to fry them. Although, if I'm going to be eating things covered in batter and deep-fried, I think I'll stick with a couple Scotch eggs... :p

See, this is where it gets weird. Ketchup is nice. But dammit, not on fish.

Lots of things works on fish n chips. Mayo, hollandaise, aioli, even the slightly odd combination caviar/crab/garlic paste/lemon was oddly tasty.

tartar sauce.

proper fish and chips (esp by the seaside) need tartar(i think thats the spelling) sauce.

Aye. Forgot the name, but that's a winner.

That's how my wife eats it too...esp when you have the rich battered fish as opposed to the merely breaded or lightly battered kind...

Me, I've never liked the taste and texture of tartar sauce...have tried straight mayo on chips (fries), but haven't wanted to risk wasting the fish by trying it on them. <g>

Chips dipped in full fat mayonnaise is a wonderful comfort food...

don't make me crave it *LOL*

I imagine it might be...although, when it comes to potatoes as a comfort food, I generally prefer to make up some mashed potatoes with a large bit of garlic-and-pepper seasoned butter (sometimes with gravy too, but that depends on my mood), or else make the french fries a little bit crunchy and dip them in melted cheese...mmmm....

Was that my stomach rumbling or did a jet just fly over? hehehe
