I saw this meteor. It lasted longed than any I had ever seen before. I went out on the deck to have a smoke and about a minute later I saw it. It went from the northeast to the southwest. It also seemed to have a long tail. I'm not sure if it was debris or flames or what.

Usually when I see meteors, they burn out in less than a second. This one crossed about 130 degrees of the arc of the sky before passing behind my neighbors house. I'd say the amount of time I saw it was about two or three seconds. Not only that, it was a lot bigger than any I'd ever seen before.

So totally cool.

It was the debris from a failed Russian rocket, launched last year.

See today's APOD for a photo and explanation.

OK. No shit. In 1992 I almost got hit by a meteorite. I was in my car and it passed between my car and the car in front of me. More so over my car. Needless to say, it freaked me out. I later emailed and spoke to some profs at a local university and told them about it. I also gave them detailed location specifics and asked them that if they ever found it to please give me a chunk of it.

At first I thought that I was seeing a plane crashing. I slowed down (as did the person in front of me) to watch...and HOLY SHIT...it was coming right towards me! The profs I talked to emailed me some articles about some kids in Houston who were out playing basketball and one of them was actually struck by a fragment of a meteorite.

I must say that was the WEIRDEST motherfucking thing that ever ALMOST happened to me.
