So I Went To See My Psychic

Well, you could still be good for the kicking part.
But I hate to kick a donkey when he's down...

Oh. So you wanted me for the kicking part? I thought you were after my body. You've made me cry now. It damn well doesn't make me feel better and I have frizzy fur to contend with.

There are two movies guaranteed to make me cry.

The first is Paths of Glory directed by Stanley Kubrick.

The other is The Mission.

I'm not sure I would recommend them though. Both are about the futility and horror of war, politics and power madness.

But they reduce me to a bawling heap every time.

I appreciate the sentiment Rob, but I think I'm going to take a pass, since I'm looking for sad, but not traumatizing.

Oh, and donkey? I wasn't thinking of you for kicking initially, but then you took yourself out of the running for the other part. Sorry to make you cry!

No worries I played spank the monkey with Charlie the Chimp.

The Business of Fancy Dancing - never fails to get to me.

Dr Shepherd prescribes THe Black Stallion. Even my BF said, with tears running down his face, "Ithought it was just gonna be a dumb movie about horses, about it isn't. It's about love."

The first time he ever "Got it".

I'm pretty sappy . . . I'd recommend "Ghost," "Titanic," and "The Story of Us."

If none of those work, I'm all for sad songs to bring on the waterworks. Some of the most effective that I've found are "The Dance" by Garth Brooks, "The Last Song" by Elton John, "Painters" by Jewel, and "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?" by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Told ya' I was sappy. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna' go cry and write depressing poetry. :)

Thanks everyone!
It looks like I might be at a birth tonight, so I won't be able to make myself cry a river this evening. But keep 'em coming and I'll take another stab at it tomorrow night.

Song: "Forever Young" - Rod Stewart

Movie: "Free Willy" and "The Killing Fields" make me cry.

Potentially scarring activity: Yahoo Tsunami Slideshow

Be happy, logo. :rose:

Oh sad songs I've got a couple of:

I just don't think I'll ever get over you - Colin Hay
White Flag - Dido (has extra significance for me)
Till I get over you - Michelle Branch
Dry Your Eyes - The Streets (and in fact the only good piece of music to ever come from the streets (Sorry Gauche))

Can anyone tell that all of the sad songs in my collection date from my breakup?

The Earl

Beaches, Fried Green Tomatoes, Boys on the Side, Steal Magnolias- they do it to me every time, no matter how many times I see them.

Dawson's Creek (certain episodes will make you cry- the last if you've seen then all and know the charactes, some of the 1st season where Gail confesses to cheating on Mitch (the adult couple on the show- with the 'perfect' marraige) There are a few deaths of beloved characters that never fail to reduce me. But none of that really matters unless you're really a fan.:) [Watch it just for Katie Holmes- she's a total hottie;)]

One thing that always makes me *almost* cry is Dogma. When Silent Bob lets out a few tears. it's all I can do not to break down myself.

Pearl Harbor and Titanic are good too. Don't roll your eyes:) When the score strikes up you'll be in tears too. i find that what always gets me is the music. It forces me to cry against my will. :p

Sad song- "Picture" by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. "Strong Enough" by Sheryl Crow. "Every Rose has it's Thorn" by Poison. (Power Ballads in General- it's the guitar) Richard Marx (yeah, I'm corny. but he's got a lot of sad songs) Reason To Believe, Rod Stewart "Against All Odds" and lots of other stuff by Phil Collins, "the Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics. "total eclips of the Heart" (try playing it over and over really loud, lol) stuff by Janis Joplin. She totally sings with heart. Tim McGraw- "Don't take the Girl" "She can't be Really Gone" "Please Remember Me" Oh hell, just turn on the country radio station!:D

Featuring Sheryl Crow

[Kid Rock]
Livin' my life in a slow hell
Different girl every night at the hotel
I aint seen the sun shine in 3 damn days
Been fuelin' up on cocaine and whisky
Wish I had a good girl to miss me
Lord I wonder if I'll ever change my ways
I put your picture away
Sat down and cried the day
I can't look at you, I'm lyin' next to her
I put your picture away, sat down and cried today
I can't look at you I'm lyin' next to her

[Sherly Crow]
I called you lastnight in the hotel
Everyone knows but they wont tell
But their half hearted smiles tell me
Somethin' just ain't right
I been waitin' on you for a long time
Fuelin' up on heartaches and cheap wine
I ain't heard from you in 3 damn nights
I put your picture away
I wonder where you been
I can't look at you while I'm lyin' next to him
I put your picture away
I wonder where you been
I can't look at you while I'm lyin' next to him
I saw ya yesterday with an old friend

[Kid Rock]
It was the same ole same "how have you been"

[Both]
Since you been gone my worlds been dark & grey

[Kid Rock]
You reminded me of brighter days

[Sheryl Crow]
I hoped you were comin' home to stay
I was head of the church

[Kid Rock]
I was off to drink you away

[Both]
I thought about you for a long time
Can't seem to get you off my mind
I can't nderstand why we're living life this way
I found your picture today
I swear I'll change my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home
I found your picture today
I swear I'llc hange my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home
I just called to say, I love you come back home

Dr Zhivago would be cathartic - but that's from someone who weep's buckets at Disney's 'Old Yeller'.

Where the Red Fern Grows.

And Charlottes Web.

I forgot to mention "November Rain" Even better if you can see the video.

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same

'Cause nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain

We've been through this auch a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain

But lovers always come and lovers always go
An no one's really sure who's lettin' go today
Walking away

If we could take the time
to lay it on the line
I could rest my head
Just knowin' that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin'
In the cold November rain

Do you need some time...on your own
Do you need some time...all alone
Everybody needs some time...
on their own
Don't you know you need some time...all alone

I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you

Sometimes I need some time...on my
own
Sometimes I need some time...all alone
Everybody needs some time...
on their own
Don't you know you need some time...all alone

And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain
I know that you can love me
When there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
Even cold November rain

Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one

This one, by Celine Dion:

"It's All Coming Back To Me Now"

There were nights when the wind was so cold
That my body froze in bed
If I just listened to it
Right outside the window

There were days when the sun was so cruel
That all the tears turned to dust
And I just knew my eyes were
Drying up forever

I finished crying in the instant that you left
And I can't remember where or when or how
And I banished every memory you and I had ever made

But when you touch me like this
And you hold me like that
I just have to admit
That it's all coming back to me
When I touch you like this
And I hold you like that
It's so hard to believe but
It's all coming back to me
(It's all coming back, it's all coming back to me now)

There were moments of gold
And there were flashes of light
There were things I'd never do again
But then they'd always seemed right
There were nights of endless pleasure
It was more than any laws allow
Baby Baby

If I kiss you like this
And if you whisper like that
It was lost long ago
But it's all coming back to me
If you want me like this
And if you need me like that
It was dead long ago
But it's all coming back to me
It's so hard to resist
And it's all coming back to me
I can barely recall
But it's all coming back to me now
But it's all coming back

There were those empty threats and hollow lies
And whenever you tried to hurt me
I just hurt you even worse
And so much deeper

There were hours that just went on for days
When alone at last we'd count up all the chances
That were lost to us forever

But you were history with the slamming of the door
And I made myself so strong again somehow
And I never wasted any of my time on you since then

But if I touch you like this
And if you kiss me like that
It was so long ago
But it's all coming back to me
If you touch me like this
And if I kiss you like that
It was gone with the wind
But it's all coming back to me
(It's all coming back, it's all coming back to me now)

There were moments of gold
And there were flashes of light
There were things we'd never do again
But then they'd always seemed right
There were nights of endless pleasure
It was more than all your laws allow
Baby, Baby, Baby

When you touch me like this
And when you hold me like that
It was gone with the wind
But it's all coming back to me
When you see me like this
And when I see you like that
Then we see what we want to see
All coming back to me
The flesh and the fantasies
All coming back to me
I can barely recall
But it's all coming back to me now

If you forgive me all this
If I forgive you all that
We forgive and forget
And it's all coming back to me
When you see me like this
And when I see you like that
We see just what we want to see
All coming back to me
The flesh and the fantasies
All coming back to me
I can barely recall but it's all coming back to me now

(It's all coming back to me now)
And when you kiss me like this
(It's all coming back to me now)
And when I touch you like that
(It's all coming back to me now)
If you do it like this
(It's all coming back to me now)
And if we, , ,

Ghost has never made me cry. Ever. It is a sappy, cliche-ridden, manipulative piece of cinema that has never made me cry, including the time I caught it halfway through on cable.

Oh, and Il Postino. That did not make me cry either. Or the SO. Or leave us numb, dazed, and stunned when it was finished. Not in the least.

Shanglan

That reminds me.

Bridges of Madison County.

I can't vouch for the movie, but the book is incredibly thin and... manipulative.

I read a note my grandma wrote, back in nineteen twenty-three
Grandpa kept it in his coat, and showed it once to me
He said "Boy, you might not understand, but a long long time ago,
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none, but I loved your grandma so..."

We had this crazy plan to meet, and run away together
Get married in the first town we came to and live forever
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet, instead,
I found this letter, and this is what it said.

If you get there before I do,
Don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through,
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down.
Darling, wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again, I'll be loving you...
Love Me.

I read those words just hours before, my grandma passed away
In the doorway of the church, where me and grandpa start to pray...
I know I've never seen him cry, in all my fifteen years
But as he said these words to her, his eyes filled up with tears...

If you get there before I do,
Don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through,
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down.
Darling, wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again, I'll be loving you...
Love Me.

And between now and then, till I see you again, I'll be loving you...

Love Me.

Love Me, Colin Ray:

Hm.

The Johnny Cash cover of Hurt is excellent, especially if you watch the video. It's one of the last songs he recorded before he died.

The song "Brick" is a good one, too. I have a version by the Lager Rhythms, an a capella group.

"When Somebody Loved Me" from Toy Story 2 always gets me going.

"The Lighthouse" is also good. The Sons of Maxwell do a good version of it.

And if you're a sucker for sweet and romantic, how love can tie you up and take your breath away, "Green and Dumb" from Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers is for you.

The only song that's ever made me cry is "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor. Lots of movies do it, tho. An Affair to Remember being the top choice.

SJ

Torn - Natalie Imbruglia.
Don't Speak - No Doubt.
Nothing Else Matters - Metallica (well, it does it for me, but maybe only because it's personal).
Run - Snow Patrol.
Somewhere Only We Know - Keane (again, that personal edge).

Oh bum. :(

And, as usual, what I learned was entirely uncomfortable for me. One of the things she really emphasized was my current low mood and general air of sadness. She said that I'm holding onto old pain and sadness, and that I need to purge it. Apparently, if I let myself (or make myself) cry and feel all icky for a few days, things will pick up for me some.

Hmmm... OK. I'll try it. It can't make things any worse, as near as I can figure. But here's the thing - I hate to cry. I avoid it at all costs. It gives me a headache and fills my sinuses and never brings that cathartic release that I read about all the time.

So I went to sorryeverybody.com and did a little crying. But not enough. I need tips on things that will trigger a good torrent of tears. Sad movies, songs, websites, stories, etc. And please let me clarify - sad but not traumatizing. I'm not up for Schindler's List or Sophie's Choice.

Bring on the melancholy, everyone!
And thanks so much!
I could have saved you so much money.
We all carry around some old desicated pain and as much as I'm against crying, I admit that I indulge on occasion.

So have a good cry and then resolve to make a list of things that are positive influences in your life. Treat yourself to something or even lunch for that matter. We all deserve some pampering now and then.

Read "The Color Purple."
