And, as usual, what I learned was entirely uncomfortable for me. One of the things she really emphasized was my current low mood and general air of sadness. She said that I'm holding onto old pain and sadness, and that I need to purge it. Apparently, if I let myself (or make myself) cry and feel all icky for a few days, things will pick up for me some.

Hmmm... OK. I'll try it. It can't make things any worse, as near as I can figure. But here's the thing - I hate to cry. I avoid it at all costs. It gives me a headache and fills my sinuses and never brings that cathartic release that I read about all the time.

So I went to sorryeverybody.com and did a little crying. But not enough. I need tips on things that will trigger a good torrent of tears. Sad movies, songs, websites, stories, etc. And please let me clarify - sad but not traumatizing. I'm not up for Schindler's List or Sophie's Choice.

Bring on the melancholy, everyone!
And thanks so much!

Toy Story 2 is the only movie I remember making me cry in a movie theater. My husband nearly lost it during Sin City, but that one's far more intense.

Go back years!

Dr Zhivago would be cathartic - but that's from someone who weep's buckets at Disney's 'Old Yeller'.

Don't shoot the dog!!!

That's me.

Oooo, maybe Old Yeller would do it.
Or The Yearling.

Something to ponder.
I could always pull out It's a Wonderful Life...

It may not work for you, Lolo, but Field of Dreams gets me every time. I usually start bawling when Burt Lancaster saves the girl and can't go back to play. From there it's a disaster.

An Affair to Remember, maybe.

How about old time goopy romance? The Way We Were, Love Story (which I personally think is the dumbest movie ever made, but it still made me cry) and of course An Affair to Remember.

Eric Shawn - my sweet sweet filmophile! How are you?
I haven't seen Field of Dreams in a long time.
I'll rent it tonight.

An Affair to Remember is getting a lot of votes. May have to add that to my movie rental list for tonight. Thanks for the suggestions.

By the way - I thought Love Story was dumb too. "Love means never having to say you're sorry..." WTF?

I'm good, Lolo. Glad to be of service.

Gotta go to that other thread and make suggestions for your AV. ;)

Thank YOU! I was just saying to someone last week that I completely disagree with Erich Segal.

Heya L,

You watch buffy and Angel at all? 'The Body' and 'I Will Remember' are the only two pieces of film guaranteed to make me cry.

Do you happen to know if they available for rental?

Away from movies and onto music....

Harry Chapin has a great way of telling stories of angst, unrequited love, sorrow and melancholy that while may not make you cry will definitely swirl the soul and let the feelings go free.

Hear, here.

Wish I could help here, but I can't make myself cry. Not that I am afraid to, or worried about my masculinity or something...if it comes I let it. But I can't do it because I think it would help.

Movies? ok, I'll admit to sports movies where someone realizes a dream...just because I never realized mine I guess...and the occassional drama/love thing...but it is not likely to be at a sad moment. When I cry over something that happens to someone else it is over a happy thing. a different kind of crying.

I've only cried over something that happened to me a handful of times. and those were all quite sad and usually irreversible things...a death or something like that.

no music makes me cry. even if it has a specific association.

Ghost has never made me cry. Ever. It is a sappy, cliche-ridden, manipulative piece of cinema that has never made me cry, including the time I caught it halfway through on cable.

Oh, and Il Postino. That did not make me cry either. Or the SO. Or leave us numb, dazed, and stunned when it was finished. Not in the least.

I'm a pushover. I cry at commercials around the holidays. Not sobbing, mind you, but just a little leakage. *sniff*

I've been told my piece "Decisions" is a tear inducer. I found it uplifting, myself.

Um, movies -- Steel Magnolias? (I'm ashamed to admit that I cried at the end of "The Dead Zone") Music -- Pachelbel's Canon in D chokes me up.

What a load of donkey shit. You need something positive and something to make you laugh, not something to make you wallow.

Crazy as it sounds, she might actually be onto something. She's right about the fact that I never let myself feel anything negative; I run from it, make it into lemonade, hide from my own dark side. So what she's saying is that I have all this old shit just kinda festering in there and if it doesn't come out, it'll only get worse.

If the crying doesn't help though, I'm up for trying your idea next. Are you volunteering? :)

I can think of better ways of venting and angst and sorrow... Crying makes my fur go frizzy.

I prefer to kick things. Or fuck things. It all depends on what thing it is.

So, are you volunteering for that, then?

I would, if I thought for one moment you'd be interested in a hairy, smelly donkey, who's one limb short of a full set.

Well, you could still be good for the kicking part.
But I hate to kick a donkey when he's down...
