on my pc... due to some stupid update that took the wrong way or something all I know is that I lost every picture, every song, every story... everything... anything that I had saved on the pc is gone... and I cannot even begin to put it back :(:(:(:(:(

Been there, done that...got the blue screen of death more than once.

I'm sorry. :rose:

Don't despair! There are ways to recover what you've lost on your computer. If you're good with computers, you can search on google for various recovery tools. If you're not very very computer literate, you can get a friend who's good with computers and ask him/her, or you can go find your local computer store and ask in there if you dont mind paying some money... It's very hard to truely lose data on a computer hard drive, as there are always ways to retrieve it if you're willing to spend the money.

Wow. That sucks. But Crazy is right and it would probably be worth it.

I had thought that I lost everything at work once, but we took the hard drive to a repair company and they recovered everything. Saved my ass, I'll tell you what ;)

If you're good with computers, these 2 articles may help:

Beginners Guides: Hard Drive Data Recovery

and

Hard drive recovery utilities: when you can't afford to lose that data

The program mentioned in the 2nd article, PC Inspector File recovery, i have personally used, and it has worked for me in the past, although your milage may vary.

If you don't really understand what the articles are talking about, then i suggest that you ask a friend who is good with computers to do it for you. Or a store.

Either way, i wish you luck :)

It is remotely possible that you lost everything on your hard drive, but very unlikely.

There is a sort of 'library catalog' in your hard disk that knew where all the files were. What is most likely gone is that 'library catalog.' There are 'repair programs' that will find at least most of the files that are still on the hard disk. If you can use the repair programs, at worst you tend to wind up with a lot of files with strange names. The files, by and large, still contain the original data, but not necessarily the initial file names. This last means that you will need to read at least some of the file data to decide what files have actually been recovered.

There are data recovery services that can recover data, even if the original data has been overridden. This last is usually an expensive process, but may be worth it to you.

Like others have said, unless the hard drive is actually physically broken, there are ways to recover lots of supposedly lost files. But it takes soem serious computer savvy. So head out there and chat up a geek. :)

I know it's closing the barn door after the horses are out and all... but...

I can't remember who here turned me on to it, but try Mozy. They do FREE backups, up to 2gig I think? It's a great service. I back up all my stuff there, so if the blue screen of death comes up, I'm covered.

Did you set up a new id on the computer? I had that happen to me -- when it came it is was with the new account, and none of my old files were showing up.

Majorgeeks.com has several freeware data recovery programs. I've used a few of them and recovered data that was 'lost' after using the recycle bin and after formatting.
It is very doubtful that all the information was lost.

Sorry Lizzy. That sux. :rose:

I know this doesn't help at all but the most computer literate person I ever met told me once that data doesn't exist unless it exists in 2 places.
I hope you have a speedy recovery (of data).

You sure you feel ok about backing up all your stuff to a secure, remote location? I'd feel better knowing I was the only one who could access it.

I do data recovery for a living, you data unless your drive has frozen solid can be recovered. Get a program called Spinright. I have seen drives that were officially called dead from the drive creators recovered. It is not free but it is worth its weight in gold and then some. It has save my bacon more times than I can count.

Good luck.

Sorry the program is called spinrite, here is the link:

http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

I know the person who made this software, not personally, but I do know him, he was one of the first people to find out about, and find a way to remove spyware, he is a technical genius, so take into consideration the software he designed... 90% of his site is free, this is the only part that isn't...

But think of it this way, if you can recover your drive, do you think it be worth the minimal cost?
