One of the things I am very thankful for about being Jewish is that I don't have to spend $5 billon on gifts for people that don't matter to me AND, th I don't have to put up and take down Christmas decorations. If I did, I would probaly keep the the decorations up all year long because I think that the lights are way cool, Then, again, what do I know? As for the gifts, children, only.

So, how many of you leave up the outside lights and how many take 'em down. And how long do you leave them up??

Man, am I glad I don't have to deal with this.

LOL

They came down right after New Years, except for one string of twinkle lights I forgot about, and was too lazy to drag out the Xmas decorations box that I had just stored away. I was going to leave them up all year and tell people I was just feeling really, really "festive" lately, when my wife finally had enough, and tore them last week.

Too lazy to hang lights up...so I guess that saves me from having to take them down.

When I was growing up there was what appeared to be an old farm house around the corner that always intrigued me. Here was this majestic two story house with sweeping porch on the front surrounded by our dumpy (by comparison) ranch style row houses. And if that wasn't special enough, the elderly lady who lived there left her Christmas lights up year round! What madness! Everytime I saw that house outlined in those large multicolored glass bulbs, I felt I had witnessed extravagance to the nth degree. I mean nobody else left up their lights all year long! But she did and I thought she was lucky in because she could turn them on when ever she wanted and automatically make Christmas come.

Blue, thanks for bringing back that sweet memory.

Xmas lites outside in July convey a big message to me...

:p

My Christmas lights go up the weekend after Thanksgiving and come down the weekend after New Years.

What you have to take those lights down? Dammit dammit it all to hell. Oops I overreacted again. I guess it is time for me to take my medication and get the ladder

I keep a set of Christmas lights hanging in my bedroom all year long. Sure, it's trashy and cheesy but they're so... neat.

I am no longer allowed to touch the Christmas decorations, especially the hand blown glass ornaments that my mother loves and the Man feels that only he can correctly roll the line of lights.

You are in great danger!

I'm surprised your mothers did not warn you of the terrible dangers involved in leaving up your Christmas decorations up after twelfth night (Jan 6th.)
It is much more dangerous than stepping on cracks in the pavement!
Apparently, if you leave as much as a single scrap of tinsel or pine needle around, the goblins come in the night and turn your milk sour, wipe your computer hard drive, infect the dog with fleas and seed the walls of your shower cubicle with black mildew! If that were not bad enough, you'll have bad luck for a year.
I don't think that Jewish people or atheists get away with it either, but there is some kind of extension for Greek and Russian Orthodox believers, who still run the Julian calendar.
I have no word from the goblins on the implications for Hindus, Muslims or Buddhists. I guess that Pagans, Wiccans etc. are able to make their own personal arrangements.
Those of you with children, please pass on this vital piece of european folklore, which appears to have fallen overboard during the passage of the Mayflower.
I could see this a RP thread!

"LIGHTS,LIGHTS,LIGHTS,OH no not the LIGHTS!"

Around our house the wife has to get them up,and the tree on Thanksgiving day.
Then the day after Christmas, they all come down.

A month of Christmas lights is long enough for me.

My favorite outside lights are....

those clear, white lights. They are so elegantly simple.

We don't do lights in my house. But last Christmas I put up a Frosty the Snowman wall-hanging in our living room, and he didn't come down until the middle of May. He just looked so cute I couldn't bring myself to take him down.

Phooey!
You're no fun any more!
I post a fine series of straight man lines for you all to pick up and run with, and nobody even picks up the obvoius Goblin joke!
Well I'm disappointed with you!
You've let me down
You've let the board down
But worst of all you've let yourselves down.
Go to your rooms and don't come down till you've thought of something funny.
Somebody laugh please!

xmas lights

blue, funny I should see your post. I just took mine down yesterday. I had been waiting for good weather for it and that can take a while in my area. I try to take them down the first weekend in January but the rain would'nt stop. They are fun to see, and I enjoy doing them . Anyway thanks for the topic.
