So hard to find an editor

Hello everyone!

This maybe just me being a bit naive, silly or doing something completely blonde (am brunette but swear I am a closet blonde!).

Am new at writing and my sexual imagination and rather wild brain most definitely outstrips my writing ability! Am a college student it not studying writing or anything related (numbers geek here lol) so naturally looking for the help of a kind editor.

Have sent out loads of messages to those listed on the VE list but no response so far. I know I am over excitable but surely I haven't put people off me in advance??

Anyone free for a bit of editing or at least advise me on the best approach to find an editor?

Thank you!!

Not Just You

I contacted multiple editors who advertised my category, but didn't hear back yay or nay from any of them. It's a volunteer program, so they're not really under any obligation to give an answer or even check that email address. Sometimes you get what you pay for?

I found my e-mail program was sending editing requests I'd received to the spam folder.
I always answer requests for editing, but it seems a majority of those who send the requests didn't bother to read my editing profile. Mind you, I'm not that great an editor, but if I'm volunteering to help, I do expect a writer to provide me with some basic information before I agree to take on a project. It got so frustrating I turned off my editing profile.
My guess, a number of volunteers have come and gone from Lit, but haven't deactivated their own editing profiles.

The VE list isn't current and won't get you far, as you discovered.

The monthly 'available to edit' thread here in the EF is an option many find useful. Post a thread such as this to draw the attention of someone willing to help. Read stories and meet other authors who can advise you or help with your story.

Be patient. And good luck in your search. :)

The thing with the VE list is that the most recent editors listed are in the first few pages. The list is sorted in chron order of editors who have recently activated or modified their profiles. The search mode of the list is where the problem arises because it pulls up a lot of profiles that should have been deactivated, but haven't been.

If a writer contacts me after viewing my profile, but he/she wants an editor for a category I don't edit, I usually just tell them I don't edit for that category. My profile is disabled right now because I got overwhelmed with editing for a while and I'm still trying to catch up.

I have sent you a private PM with my profile and other information as a VE editor, maybe your PMs are not turned on.

Look for editors that update their profile often.

It is interesting that Libby is on line now and several times before and including myself, has had offers to edit her story, but does not have the courtesy to respond to any of these. It is no wonder she cannot find an editor with that attitude.

There are several comments on this forum that say editosr do not reply , but I have to say that often the authors are just as ignorant.

Have just had a message from her:

Sorry have been buried in messages. Am all good from the editor point of view but thanks for your offer. Appreciated.

so I guess the thread can be 'stood down'

I've had a few recently that I agreed to edit something for and then they just didn't carry through. It's possible they will come forward with something later, but I have to schedule my edits (usually working on more than one at a time)--the offer is usually for only when I specified it could fit.
