believe me, i know it's difficult. it's a fine line between being outgoing and being an asshole. here are my suggestions

1) don't insult people.

2) try to guide the conversation towards something you know about. if nothing else you can gossip about other lit members.

3) it's easier to engage one or two people in coversation than a large group, so start small.
