Snow, a young 18 year old neko, lives in the alleys of the city, appearing to anyone who sees her as a poor girl. No one cared for her, and if anyone looked at her, they didn't look past the dirt and stains, because underneath them she was a beautiful girl, with golden wavy hair, soft light blue eyes, a small but slim body, and a shy personality. No one saw her golden cat ears or matching tail because she kept them hidden, since no one knew of the existence of nekos.
Currently, Snow was walking through the park on a cold winter night, her clothes tattered and torn, her hair a disheveled mess, and her exposed skin dirty. She hadn't eaten in days, and she could barely walk. As Snow reached a tree covered in frost, she couldn't walk anymore and collapsed. Snow lay there, shaking in the freezing wind, her breath coming out in small clouds, and she was pulling her torn shirt tighter around herself. Snow soon lost consciousness, lying there in the shade of the frozen tree.

Introducing Vanessa

Vanessa was muttering at herself for getting caught out in the weather. The 24 year old brunette had gone into the city to spend the evening with her friends. She had thought she was clever when she left her Mercedes parked on the street near the restaurant instead of paying the valet service. But then the group went bar hopping and eventually they ended up blocks away from where her car had been left. As the group broke up, she found herself alone to make her way back to her car.

It was late, cold and windy as she walked back towards the restaurant. She decided that the quickest, most direct path was to cut through the park, even though it was not well lit. She pulled her coat tighter around her slender body and walked at a brisk pace.

She almost didn't see the figure lying under the tree along the walkway. Something made her stop and look again and she discovered it was a woman, younger than herself, dressed in tattered clothes, lying unconscious in the bitter cold weather.

"Hello! May I help you?" Vanessa shook the young girl's shoulder and she moved, tilting her head to look up at Vanessa with her blue eyes. She couldn't say anything.

"Let me get you someplace warm." Vanessa said as she helped the young blonde to her feet and then wrapped her coat around the two of them as she walked her down the path towards where her car was located.

Vanessa helped her into the car and then started the car to get heat upon the strange young woman.

"May I give you a ride home?" she asked and the young girl simply shook her head no. Looking over the tattered clothing of the girl, she asked a more obvious question.

"Do you have a home?" Vanessa asked tentatively. Again the young girl shook her head no.

"Then you are coming home with me." She announced as she put the car in drive and headed home to the outskirts of town.

Vanessa had grown up with all the comforts she wanted. Her family was wealthy and lived in a large mansion on several acres of tree covered land in an exclusive part of the city. At the age of 22, just after she graduated from college, her parents had been tragically killed in an auto accident, leaving Venessa as an only child, with more wealth than she knew how to handle. Fortunately she had a live-in couple, a butler and a maid, to help her with the house, and her uncle James assisted her with the finances.

As she drove home with the strange young homeless woman in her car, Vanessa remember her days as a little girl when she would bring home an occasional stray dog or cat, much to her mother's chagrin. This time she was bringing home a stray, homeless person.

The Mercedes passed through their private security gate and up the driveway to the main house. She pulled into the garage and then she helped the young girl into the kitchen, sitting her at the table.

"I suspect you need something to eat." she said as she looked into the refrigerator to see what she could find.

Snow runs a hand over over her hair to make sure her ears were still hidden, and she then softly speaks, her voice low, with a shy note in it, and the faintest hint of a purr. "Yes please. D-Do you have any... fish and milk?" Her last meal had been a week before, after a couple leaving a restaurant had been kind and given her some bread, but she didn't say anything about this, conscious of her tail twitching where she had curled it under the skirt she wore.

Vanessa thought the young girl's request for milk and fish was a bit odd, but she didn't really know what else to give her. She poured a glass of milk and set that on the table before the girl. Then she pulled out a fresh 6 ounce filet of salmon.

"I have this nice filet of salmon. How do you want me to cook it? I can bake it or saute it in a pan."

She looked the girl over, now better able to see her in the light. She definitely needed a bath and a fresh set of clothes to wear.

"I don't even know your name. I am Vanessa. What is your name?"

Snow looked at the salmon, her light blue eyes having a soft glint in them as she bit her bottom lip, revealing, ever so slightly, two pointed canines, but they weren't very noticeable at a distance. "C-Can you bake it, please? And, m-my name is Snow." One of her ears twitched, lifting the part of her hair she had flattened her ear under ever so slightly as her gaze shifted to Vanessa.

"Bake, it is." she said as she preheated the oven to 425°. "This should only take about 12 minutes."

Vanessa stood looking at Snow and wondered what sort of life the young girl had. She was obviously homeless. Had she run away from home? Or was she without family? She herself was now without family and she knew how suddenly a person's situation could change.

Looking at Snow's hair, Vanessa could see that she had beautiful wavy golden hair, even if it was dirty at the moment. She though she saw a piece of hair lift slightly, but guessed that she was mistaken.

"Snow is a very interesting name. I assume your parents named you that?" She hoped a question might get the young girl to talk more about herself.

Snow glanced down slightly, her light blue eyes focused on the milk as sh lifted it and sniffed it a bit before taking a sip of it, her tail flicking under her skirt, and she set the glass down before speaking. "I don't remember my parents. I only remember waking up in a forest a couple months ago with.... a collar around my neck and the name Snow on it."

Snow's answer was completely unexpected. How could someone not remember their past more that just a couple of months? And she awoke in the forest wearing a collar with the name Snow on it? Most puzzling, Vanessa thought.

Vanessa looked closely at Snow and could see behind her golden locks and her tattered clothes, that indeed she wore a collar, like one that a pet would wear. It appeared to be a well made collar of white leather with the name 'Snow' spelled out in shiny metallic rhinestones. How odd indeed.

The fish only needed a few more minutes to cook. Looking at Snow, she realized how dirty her hands and face were. Vanessa hadn't considered how she would eat like that.

"Maybe you want to freshen up a bit before eating. Maybe wash your hands and face before eating? There is a small bathroom just around that corner for you to use. The fish will be ready in a few minutes."

Snow nodded and got up, walking to the bathroom, her tail flicking a bit under her skirt cause she was starting to lose feeling in it, and as she closed the door, she mewed softly, her tail coming out from under her skirt and her ears popping up, stretching them in relief as she started washing her hands and face, letting out a rather loud mew of surprise as the cold water hit her face, and she shook herself, looking into the mirror. She was shocked at how dirty she was, and she forgets she was in Vanessa's house as she tried again to remember her past, standing there for quite a while.

Vanessa watched as the young girl got up from the table and walked towards the bath. Soon the fish in the oven was done, so Vanessa took it and placed it on a plate which she put on the table. Noticing that Snow had finished the glass of milk, she refilled it. Then she set out a napkin and a place-setting of flatware.

Lastly, Vanessa poured herself a glass of wine and sat down across the table.

She remembered back to those times she had brought a stray cat or dog home and was allowed to keep it, unless an owner came to claim it. She always felt it was her responsibility to care for those who needed her help. Snow also needed her help. But Snow was different. She was a real human being who apparently didn't have a home and couldn't remember her past. Should she take Snow to the authorities and let them figure out who she was? Or should Vanessa keep her, at least for a while, and help the girl get back on her feet, so to speak?

Snow needed help. It appeared likely that she could be somewhat pretty when she got cleaned up. She had a mysterious nature to her, but not in a threatening sort of way. Vanessa was quite concerned for the young girl.

Vanessa became aware that some amount of time had passed, and Snow was still in the bathroom. Vanessa had heard some unusual sounds, almost cat like, but wrote that off to the strange sounds of a large old house. But still she had been in there for quite a while.

She rose and walked over to the bathroom door and tapped lightly upon it.

"Snow? Are you OK? Do you need anything?"

Snow, who had been trying to remember past a couple months before, jumped in fright at the sound of Vanessa's voice, a small startled 'meow' escaping her, and she quickly coils her tail under her skirt and around her leg before answering. "I-I'm fine." She was about to open the door when she remembered her ears, flattening them back down on her head. She was scared that she would be kicked out if Vanessa knew the truth about her. Snow slowly opened the door to look at Vanessa, unaware that she hadn't correctly hidden her ears and the pink insides were visible some among her golden hair.

Vanessa waited outside the bathroom door for Snow's response. She heard that cat-like sound again followed by a hesitant "I-I'm fine". Then the door opened and Snow slowly walked out, almost as if scared of her surroundings. Vanessa thought that Snow's hair was a bit different, but she tried not to stare at her.

They returned to the kitchen table and sat. Snow quickly began to eat while Vanessa picked up her wine and took another sip.

"I've never been homeless, but I do understand being without parents. Mine were killed a couple of years ago. And it is a scary world to face all by oneself. If you like, you may stay here. I have a guest bedroom and it even has some of my old clothes which should be about your size. I think you need a bath tonight and a good night's sleep. We can talk more in the morning."

She kept catching glances at Snow, trying not to stare. Snow appeared to be different, but Vanessa couldn't quite put her finger on it.

Snow, who had been looking down as she ate, looked up at Vanessa at what she said, her light blue eyes getting a glint in them. "R-Really? You'd let me stay the night?" Snow was hiding behind her golden hair a bit and looking at Vanessa. Her left ear twitched slightly at the thought of a soft bed and a proper bath, more of the pink inside showing as it settled down into her hair again.

"I insist that you spend the night. I am not going to put you out into that miserable weather." Vanessa said in a gentle loving voice.

When Snow had finished eating, Vanessa picked up the empty plate and glass and set it all into the sink.

"Let me show you the guest bedroom."

She took the young girl's hand and led her up the stairs to a bedroom which had once been Vanessa's room when she was younger. As Vanessa was now the owner of the mansion, she now occupied the master suite located at the end of the hallway.

"I think you will find this room satisfactory. You have a private bath and there are clothes in the dresser and the closet which should fit you. There is a wide selection of dresses, tops, skirts, and jeans, as well as undergarments which may fit you. And we simply must throw away those tattered clothes you are wearing."

Vanessa couldn't help but steal glances of the young girl, especially her long golden locks of hair which appeared to move some on their own. 'A very curious person.' she thought to herself.

Snow smiled and thanked Vanessa, a purr escaping her lips which she quickly tried to cover up, going to the bathroom and closing the door with a sigh, her til uncoiling from around her leg as she stood there, hoping Vanessa hadn't heard her, and she started to remove her clothes, self-conscious she was in another's home.

Vanessa was tired from a long day. As she laid in bed she thought about the recent 'stray' she had brought home. Vanessa was very curious about Snow, her circumstances, and her lack of a past. It just wasn't a lifestyle that she had any experience with. But she felt some amount of compassion.

She considered whether to allow Snow to just stay the one night, or allow her to stay longer, possibly helping her get back on her feet. Vanessa thought she might like to have some companionship in the large house. She had Martha and Ben, a married couple who acted as maid/cook, and butler. They had been with Vanessa's family as long as she could remember. And now there were discussions about Martha and Ben retiring and moving to a warmer climate. Maybe it was time for changes.

The next morning Vanessa got up and went down to the kitchen. She made a pot of coffee and prepared breakfast for herself and Snow. She had bacon with eggs, toast, and an assortment of fruit. She also set out chilled pitchers of milk and some juice.

She was reading the morning news on her tablet when Snow walked in.

Snow was dressed in a simple white blouse and skirt, her body washed and cleaned as she sat down, and her wavy golden hair brushed and tidy, her light blue eyes looking around the kitchen as she sniffed the air. One of her ears flicked, becoming briefly visible among her golden hair before it flattened back down, her tail coiled around her leg under the skirt.

Snow looked like a whole new person after a good bath, her hair brushed, and wearing clean clothes. Vanessa had expected Snow to wear some of the more casual clothes from her closet and was pleasantly surprised to see her in a skirt and blouse, a much more feminine look.

Again she noticed a flick of hair, almost as if a ear had popped up and laid back down. And the way Snow raised her nose and sniffed the room was very curious.

"Something to drink? Coffee, juice, or milk?" Vanessa asked, curious as to whether the young girl had a particular taste for milk, something a bit unusual for a teen.

"For breakfast I have prepared scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, and fruit. Please have whatever you like. I also have some yogurt if you prefer."

Snow smiles and sits down, pouring herself some milk and fixing a small amount of the food, nibbling on a piece of toast as she looked around herself, her tail flicking under her as her light blue eyes looking at everything.

Vanessa sat across from Snow, sipping her coffee and eating her breakfast. She watched Snow take some milk and eat a bit of the food, as her blue eyes looked all around her.

'She is just like a stray kitten.' Vanessa thought, remembering back to the strays she had brought into her home as a child. The way Snow looked about and even what she took to eat and drink reminded Vanessa of a cat.

"Do you remember anything before awakening in the woods with a collar on your neck?" Vanessa asked, attempting to learn more about the girl.

"How long have you been homeless? I don't mind if you want to stay here with me. Would you like to stay here?"

Snow looked at her with delight and nodded, finishing her toast before speaking. "I'd love to stay. But, I don't remember anything from before waking up. It's just... a haze." She looked down, rather sad that she couldn't remember, not realizing a soft sad mew had escaped her lips when she finished her sentence, nibbling on some bacon.

Snow was making soft sounds and looking sad. Vanessa felt responsible for asking about her past, so she rose to her feet and stepped over next to Snow, reaching out to hold her close.

Her fingers ran though the young girl's golden locks of hair, but unexpectantly encountered something else.

"An ear?" Vanessa said in surprise.

Snow jumped slightly, an audible 'mew' escaping her as she looked at Vanessa, and her ears pop up out of her hair, her tail uncoiling from around her leg and twitching in plain sight. She looked down slightly, her light blue eyes avoiding Vanessa. "I-I'm sorry. I didn't want you to see what I really am. P-Please don't be mad." Her voice had an audible purr in it, which explained all thecat noises from the previous night.

Vanessa stepped back in shock as cat ears and a tail appeared and Snow made another of those mysterious cat sounds.

"You . . . You . . . You're one of those! They are real. You are real. It is not just folklore legend. H...H...How is this possible?"

Vanessa just stood there, staring at Snow. The events of the previous 12 hours made sense, even if she couldn't fathom how this was at all possible. She had heard of beings that were part human, and part cat, but never thought they were real. And here was one, a lovely young one, sitting in her kitchen.

She was afraid that she had scared the creature, or was she more human?

"Please do not be afraid. I will not harm you."

Snow looked at Vanessa, her ears flattened back a bit as she bit the end of her tail, clearly nervous by how quickly she had reacted, her body shaking slightly with a bit of fright as her light blue eyes looked at the other girl. Despite being nervous and scared at the moment, Snow was just downright adorable the way she looked, with her ears half up and nibbling on her tail.
