Instead of an evil queen, we have a vain (but basically good-hearted) witch. Every day, the witch asks her mirror who the fairest one of all is. And it keeps telling the witch who, as the story tells us, is incredibly beautiful, that she is the fairest. But one day, instead of saying the witch is the most beautiful, the mirror points out a guy (maybe a prince) as being the fairest. And the witch finds him. Sex and marriage results. And the witch stops being as vain.

The essence of the story is the conflict. Good vs Evil. If you have only the "witch" or "queen", is there enough conflict?

Perhaps have the Prince SO vain that he initally rejects her, then she has to slip him the old poison apple? Except that simply makes him relax and enjoy the sex. THEN they fall in love, etc.

This particular story has no real conflict, it's just a happy little story. :::shrug:::

too happy to be interesting?

I think happy stories with limited or no conflict can be interesting, though I admit a bit of conflict adds some spice.

Hmmm, only one of the stories in my favorites list lacks any meaningful conflict. Still, I'd consider a story like The Invisible Man to lack serious conflict (though I wouldn't claim it has none).

oh, there is a huge Romance market. It just requires conventions that I don't understand.

Alternative: Evil queen isn't evil or vain but rather is seeking a mate. The mirror keeps showing her herself but eventually masturbation won't cut it. She is surprised when she ends up finding that the fairest one in all the land ends up being another female (Snow White). Prince charming tries to get Snow White and fails because the queen is a better lay. There :p
