Snow Place Like Home

A vistor to the Valley

The snow continued to come down and Cole O'conner trudged through the deep snow. He huge fur artic boots which he had chosen to wear when he left his cabin weren't much help. Had had chosen the for speed so he could hunt. Not hunting so much as eliminating a problem. A wolf driving crazy by rabbies had been prowling around his farm. His nearest neighbor had mentioned the animal some months back but this was the first he had seen of the crazied wolf. He was sure that it had killed some livestock. The neighbor was a good twenty-five miles away which was part of the neighborhood by valley standards. The animal had taken its time getting to his domain, but once it was there Cole would not waste any time in dealing with it. He was foolhardy in his actions once he had spotted it. He dressed quickly didn't take much in the way of supplies besides a flask and extra ammunition. The three dogs he had with him were all tough and hunters. Even they began to show pain from the sting of the could. It would be dark soon. His father would have called him a fool, but if not for the fact he had killed the wolf at a distance of fifty meters. The shot was made dangerously close but the weather limited vision greatly. If the wolf had bit him or any of his dogs it would have been unthinkable. He had made a fire out in the woods to warm himself and to dispose of the dieased carcus. Nothing was pleasant about today but all necessary.

Most of the day had been spent tracking the beast only to be led back near home. He now walked parallel to the road which he had moved pretty close to he had figured. The dirt road that lead to his home and had the mailbox on it was about two miles from the house. This his father had done so his mother could make her weekly trips into town. Like many O'connors before him his father was more then willing to live off the land and enjoy the soluted of the mountains. His mother had not influenced him much though and when Cole did make it into town it wasn't for months at a time. He would spend a few days resupply then head back up into his wildrness.

Hawkeye remained small but it did its best to keep up with the times. It was over an hour drive to get there and in the next valley. He had missed it during his time away though. For eight years like many males in his family Cole went on adventures before returning home. For his Grandfather it was the Army in World War II returing with his Grandmother a Dutch war bride. His father spent three years fighting in Vietnam before loosing himself in the woods. Cole's mother was a local girl and was the one who started the family business. Huskies from Canada were a prize to anyone during the winter. People from all over came to buy these heavy coated work dogs. Many swore they the ones mom raised were especially friend. Cole's mother took pride in the fact that they were among the best and through greatful owners and news about dog sledding winners came up every year. For Cole though things had changed in a number of ways. He adventure all over the world. He cut timber and worked on fishing boats in Alaska. An oil tanker brought him to France which led to a stin with the French Foreign Legion. He fought in brutal dirty battles in which he received metals and scars. He hunted in Africa for a time before returning home. Though he had know women he never found a wife and returned home to an empty farm. His parents had passed away while he was gone and though people were friendly, but Cole searched for peace in the mountains. He maintained some contact with town through supply runs and would bring dogs to sell in the spring. The stretch though became longer and longer.

Now something brought him back to reality. He didn't see a think, but the sounds of a truck grinding on the road could be heard. He was used to hearing the traffic but today was different. Like screaches of pain the care moved on the road then Cole closed his eyes and heard the sound that would terrorify anyone who had not witnessed a crash before. Thing was it was not skidding on the road but sounded like it was going off it. Cole began to move torwards the direction as it seemed to continue down the hill with a few lud bangs along the way. With dogs close behind Cole paused looking about what had caused so much noise. He was hoping for something that had fallen of a large truck rather then a wrecked one but heknew better though. What had made those sounds had to be a truck. It seldom happen since most locals travelled little through the valley during the winter for this reason. Hell in a week or two with the way the pass froze up they wouldn't have a choice. He looked about again then spotted the wreck.

Quickly he moved torwards the truck. There looked like someone was inside the wreck. The vehicle looked be banged up pretty well and at the very least undriveable. With some effort and plenty of muscule Cole pried the door open. First to make it inside was Mary a plump but good tracking dog with a white and black coat. She sniffed the person and eagerly licked and nuggled what soon appeared to be a woman. A quick look confirmed it and she wasn't a local Cole thought. None the less this was a person that was firmiiar to him though being in trouble was enough of a reason to give her aid. She wasn't wake and it looked like she took a good hit on the head. That meant she wasn't walking any place. He slung his weapon and her duffel bag over his should then picked her up in both arms and started to head for home. The dogs sprinted head and he moved a bit slower then before with the added weight.

He finally made it home many stops to rest later and a sore body. To be sure he was strong but the snow and the cold made any task that much harder. Add to that a long day before hand well it was no wonder Cole stumbled into the main cabin. He was quickly greeted by many eager fury creatures which bucked up his spirits. This year thanks to his over eager males he had three litters very close to each other. Now thirty huskies shared the farm, and most were growing puppies. It wasn't easy but he managed.

The main cabin was divided into three rooms each with its own fireplace. The front room was wear the animals were supposed to sleep though they slept all over. It had the front door with firewood piled around it on the outside. The other side of the cabin had the supples anything that didn't go bad or wasn't needed everyday. The main room had a large first place unlike the other two with wood burning stoves. Half was living room space with couches and a bookshelves near the stone fireplace which was against the front room wall. The other half was kitchen space with the door leading to the storeroom.

First thing he did though was to place his "guest" on the large couch closest the first. With out thinking he pulled off her boots and socks then her jacket and sweater. He stopped himself. He had not been with a woman in awhile but he knew no woman would be happy to wake up safe only to be put in fear the next moment. He tossed the duffel bag down next to the fire so it would dry out. He added logs to it so the tempeture began to rise. The he covered her with thick wool blankets and placed her head on a pillow. He had made her safe, warm, confortable he couldn't do anything else but wait to see if she was okay. Many dogs came by to sniff and lick both him and the new visitor to the cabin. He slipped out of his gear and changed to dry inside boots. He took care chores around the cabin. A two large pots of beef stew so soon cooking along with some biscuits with many of the dogs camped near the stove. He tended all the fires in the cabin..and waited for the stew to be ready. The cabin was warm and the inviting smell of cooking food was in the air. Cole finally sat down to rest on a couch across from from the woman. He looked at her. She was beautiful. He wondered who she was and what lead her to be on that snowy road. Those questions he hoped she would be able to answer soon. Mary who had been on the hunt with him had taking a liking to the woman. She climbed on the couch with her and tryed nuzzling her a few times and licking her ear. Well if she didn't wake Mary would sleep with her. She put her head on the girl's shoulder and drifted off. Cole smiled and relaxed and tried hard not to drift off as he looked at the fire and the woman. Many questions and few answers. He hoped she would react well to things.

First meeting...

Cole drifted off from time to time for quick five minute breaks. He had learned it when on long shifts on board ship and in the military. Out a few up for a lot longer. He had realised that the woman would most likely be frightened to wakeup in a strange place after an acident. He only hoped she would wakeup considering she had banged her head. All sighs seemed to point to that she would be fine. He watched Mary nuzzle with their sleeping "guest." She had pretty long brown hair. Well All he could do was wait. He got up and put another blanket on her and poked the fire after adding another log. He would stay close incase she woke up soon.

He had chores to do and most could be handled right in the main cabin of the compound. First he made sure the wood burning stove in the front room was goign strong for the dogs. He bent back into the main room glanced at the woman and sniffed one of the the pots. Ready he thought. He poured all the contents of the large stroff on the floor for the dogs. Many happy little fury creatures ran over to eat. Mary stayed on the couch but like alot of the older dogs she came to eat when she wanted. Cole did make sure the puppies got there fill of food and weren't musculed out by any of the bullies. With the eating going on he went and checked is own food. The biscuits would be done soon and he put the stove on simmer for the second pot. The gas stove was one of the few modern things his mom had inisted on when she came home with dad. He always said that women were the ones responsible for civilization. Before his grandmother the farm didn't have running water. His parents had incfluenced him though still. He had kept up his mother's garden and his appearance. Everday you shaved and you had a hair cut his father had said. Like today it was cold as balls but he shaved. His blond hair was in a short military style hair cut he had had since he went to France. He was over 6 feet tall and very muscular. He woke up every morning and did one hundred pushups and situps. Another old habit he had picked up. He walked back torwards the couch and began to wonder.

His family history in the area was a long one with relationships to many families in the area both Irish and native American. The family Bible which had a section for records placed the first O'conners in the area in the begining of 1800's. Though Cole's grandmother made sure every one knew of their other European roots. Her family had been a mixture of Dutch and German with a long history. They had never minded the isolation. Sure some members of the family had scattered, but Cole was fine right here. Though his guest might not be so happy. With all the snow coming down the pass would probably close up even sooner the normal. Hiking to Hawkeye would not be easy by any means and he had never tried it this time of the year. He would work that out this his guest at some point.

He was very tired though and if his guest did not wake up soon even if it was rude or not he would eat without her. He settled back down on the couch across from where the woman was laying. His eyes flickered and he fought of going to sleep. His eyes shut though and his rested himself. It was not long though before he heard Mary hop down and pad across the floor. The word, 'hello' made his eyes open wide in reaction and he sat up. Several of the dogs looked up as well.

Clearing his throat he looked at the woman. "Ah hello are you feeling alright? I found your truck wrecked on the hill by the road. Your truck was pretty beatup. Oh Brought your duffel bag." He pointed to it near the fire which had a huskie sleeing up against it. "Oh Sorry about that. Kyle move over" The pure black huskie got up and moved over put layed near the fireplace. "Anyway we would you,"smiles and Mary walked over by you again. "Mary is the one that found you and licked you,"giggled. She is a good tracking dog. Well I guess we should start with the basics. I am Cole and you are? The snow has only gotten worse out there so if you want any more stuff from the truck we will have to wait until to more. Oh I am sorry though you feel okay? Need anything? This is my cabin by the way. It is a lot closer then Hawkeye is and to tell you the truth I ususally hunker down for awhile when it is like this. Don't work I have like three months worth of supplies. Maybe more." He smiled at her looking at her really looking at her for the first time.

He realized all the questions would be daunting to anyone waking up never mind one that had been in a car wreclk. She seemed in okay shape and was damn lucky no bones had been broken. Some had died from far less up on the road. " Am sorry you have been through alot in the last little bit take your time. No rush tell me what you want when you can."

He watched her move the hair from her face. The only thought came to his mind was beautiful Sure he had not seen a woman in awhile, but there was a time when he did know women from all over the world. Among them she ranked highly. "Ah hello Mckenna James your a country girl aren't you? But well different. My mother named me Cole. Ah Cole O'conner. You are not from the valley are you? I am sorry I am doing it again," Cole said as he realized he was asking questions all over again. He had not been around people in awhile and was trying hard to be whatever normal was lately. Every three months or so he did make it into town for supplies. The family that ran the large general store was always willing to take items in trade. Whether is was skins, hand made cabinets, or even sled dogs. For the time he was in town he got along with and this was no different. So he cracked a smile. " I am glad your okay want some asprin?"

He smiled as she reacted warmly to Mary as she went over to the woman. He won't be able to stand someone who did not like dogs. After looking at each other for a bit across from each other he stood up. He took the intiative and made his way over to the kitcen area. There was a large refridgerator next to the stove. " Ah are you hungry?" He was and hoped she would say yes. The refridgerator was necessary for the summers, but in the winter anything kept outside would freeze solid and in the case of things like juice it was impractical. One of the features he add to the farm was a windmill that allowed him to produce and store power. In the winter he mainly confidend himself to the main cabin to conserve energy. He took what looked like an old milk bottle out of the fridge filled with orange juice. He took off the cap and filled a clean beer glass with the juice. Above the sink he had a bottle of Aleve and walked back towards the couches.

He walked back over to McKenna and saw she was deep in thought and moved across to her. "Ah here is some juice and something to help with the pain." When she smiled he smiled back and listened as he sat back down. "Well a guest is no problem I have at least 4 months of supplies. I always take on extra. This year the dogs gave me three litters of strong healthy puppies. I have some thirty dogs around. I always add some extra stuff on. Ah McKenna I hope your not in any hurry to get to Hawkeye. I was up around the trail I take there today and it looks real rough and I know my truck won't make it very far. You have anyone looking for you?" He hoped she didn't take the last question the wrong way. If this woman had a family they would be worried sick, and in that case they would have to make a try for town.

He smiled as she thanks him and Mary for the rescue, but looked at her strangely because of the last thing she said. "Ah compensation? Ah for what? Doing the right thing. I don't want a reward for helping you I am fincially okay." He wasn't insulted but in the valley help to another in need was just something you did. "Having you here isn't any trouble. Plus Mary likes you." He smiled and thought maybe I like you too. This woman didn't belong here though. First chance she would go back to the world and he would help.

Dinner with a guest.

Cole felt good in feeling the touch of a woman the warth of another body close to his in the dead of winter was something he would not even admit to himself that he had missed. Many a night he spent here at the main house on the couch asleep with the dogs. Now he had a new guest and Mary had a new friend. He body felt good to him and fit like a piece that had been missing. This was to much to deal with though. He had just met this woman and she was sick. No time for feelings though at this moment. Cole helped her to a wooden chair. His Grandfather the truly skiled wood worker had made them as a young man for his mother. They were a testement to fine craftmenship. Now he guide McKenna down to one at the table. The table was of good oak and had blue place mats at four spots. The puppies had jumped from the sound of the glass so Cole was glad to be able to pick up the shards of glass before they were in a paw. He shood them away and McKenna held on to Mary's collar for a little bit. After he gathered up the glass and tossed it in the trash been he went to the stove. He looked back, "don't worry nothing special about those glasses bought them only last supply run."

He loved her hair and her deep green eyes. He couldn't believe that this woman had just dropped in his lap like this and though he was nervous about scaring her not matter what he did she what have some fears. He had to put her at easy. If this was a friend or kin she would have just settled in and would have expected rescue. Now she was in the cabin of a strange man. He looked into a stew put and stirred it. It was ready, but he thought to himself how much he had isolated himself since coming back. Maybe this was a way to change that. Have a a friend. "Well you may have a concussion so no sleep tonight." He glanced at the digiatal clock above the sink. It displayed time, date, and day. It was 7:00pm already no wonder the dogs were so hungry. He began to fill two large soup bowls with the stew and filled two glasses with pure well water.

He walked over to her and placed a bowl and glass infront of her and looked to see her reaction. In part because of whether she liked the food or not but also to see if she liked the french china. He had set it to his mother from Paris one Christmas. Even made a stir in town when it arrived at the post office. It was white with a design and blue flowers and gold ribbons painted on it. She seemed to approve his cooking would be another matter. He headed back to get the biscuits and a tub of butter which he returned with shortly.

"Well I have more things to drink but the hard stuff is out for awhile considering your injury." McKenna nodded as she picked up her spoon. " Do you like chess?"

"I know how to play nothing I do regularly though."

"Good maybe I have a chance then," Cole Smiled. " Since your head injury could be a concussion I think you should stay up tonight. We can talk maybe play some chess. I know it is not how you would like to spent a night but it is at least necessary for tonight. The sleeping arrangement well ah that is a little harder. I will need a day to setup the other cabin or maybe I will camp out in the storeroom. You have family in Hawkeye?"

" Yes I have people there. I guess you could say family," it wasn't convicing to Cole but she wasn't dangerous. Wasn't transporting drugs or anything like that.

"Well I am sure they will be worried so once the weather allows for it and you are feeling better we can hike it out there. Won't be easy but I have done it before. I hope I got everything you had out of the truck."

"Yeah just one bag used to travelling like that. No frills is my style. Hope the camera equipment is okay though. Can't understand why anyone would travel with more then one large duffel bag of stuff." Cole smiled at her way of thinking. Just the basics your not moving his seargent had always told him.

"Okay let's get started," Cole said as he began to eat the food. Not a bad batch he thought made this one with beer. He butthered a biscuit and ate it and looked over to see if she liked the food. "I know you probably have different choices in the city but food is pretty down home basic here. So what do you do in the city? This supposed to be a fun vaction?" He laughed and tried to joke to make here feel better with a joke. "He looked into those deep green eyes and it took a few moments for him to pull himself out of it and go back to eating. She was something special and though he didn't see a ring on her finger somebody else as ususal probable had figured it out. He sighed and ate up.

Cole had learned the game of chess from a comrade in the French Foreign Legion. The man had been a college professor running from disgrace. He was never sure of the full story but has he had learned the game he looked forward to playing so he could defeat his teacher. This evening though he had looked forward to it so he could sit across from his charming guest.

She had enjoyed the hardy meal he had made and seemed perplex to find the fine china in a rustic cabin. He liked to keep her guessing and until she asked him about it he would not tell her. He had several sets in the cabinets. Most of the time though he ate off the blue plates that many people would use for camping. She had answered most of his questions and though he wasn't sure he though his father may have know his some years ago. She even seemed to like the way he cooked.

" I know you are probably used to more choices in the city but my best cooking is basic country foods. I eat what I get from the land and hunt. Don't worry though I get plenty of store bought food too. I stocked up with the storms in mind." Cole leaned over and picked up a little puppy and gently petted him and did not prevent him from licking the plate. "Okay that is enough Chad," with a smile he placed the animal on the floor and sent him on his way.

During the chess game he noticed her looking around the room. He had shared some about the place with her. That his mother had been the one resonsible for improving the place and seeing it became modern at least partly. Behind him he saw her eyes glance over the bookshelves. They were very large and it would be had to believe that ever were moved into the cabin. They were an inch short of touching the ceiling and very long. One was filled with books on medicine, building, survival, and other replated topics. The next was filled witth the classics. Chacer, Homer, Shakespeare among others. Between the second and third was a suit of samurai armor complete with weapons that he had won in a card game during a trip overseas. The Third self was similar tot he first but had had space for the chess set. Above the fireplace was a pair of muskers one with 1776 marked on a brass plaque.

Several of the young pups would naw on each of their jeans from time to time. Cole took time to pet them gently while Mckenna made her move. "Don't normally have so many around at once but I kind of like it to be honest. When they are first born I keep them in the barn until they are house broker. Most learn from the older dogs. It is better there with the hay on the floor. Then they come to the main house." He smiled as McKenna put her piece down a pure white puppy hopped in her lap for the remainder of the game. "Oh that is snow she always look for someone to lay with." He cracked a smile. He couldn't tell her that it was so good to have someone to talk too considering how she came to him. He felt guilty for feeling it. The warm feeling.

After he looked at her like a dog in heat he realized she had felt it and was blushing. He stood up and looked into the fire. Well The bathroom is down the hall to the right." He pointed to the door in the kitchen." You go through it and the supply room is on the left and the bathroom is on the right. Sorry to say the shower head is broken I am not the greatest plump and it borke just after getting back last trip. The bath is fine and the toliet and sink are normal. You like baths?"

McKenna smiled, "right now a bath would be good. Relax the muscules and all. I could soak for a bit."

"That sounds good. You can bath first and then I will use it. The linen closet is in there and there are plenty of towels. Just make sure you close it. I have found some pups like to sleep in there and get the towels hairy." Cole laughed he wouldn't mind it but she might. "Can I dry any clothes out for you in the mean time?"

He needed to say something to her to make himself clear on things. "McKenna...ah....youc an feel safe with me. I was never married or anything but I know how to treat a woman and your guest. So if anything bothers you let me know. I don't spend alot of time around people so let me know. Okay?" The strong man, the warrior gave a weak insecure grin. "Oh and your the guest so I am the one who should really be doing the dishes.

While he did the dishes he thought about what she had said. He had made the joke to break up the spell, but no before making her feel that her thank you was excepted. She seemed to take awhile in the bath. She was probably enjoying ti and nursing the wouds of the day. She had had a rough time today. Once finish up with dishes he played with some of the pups. The animals were always good companions, but good conversations was harder to find. Once he was finished in the kitchen he moved to the fireplace and tossed on another large log on the fire. He walked around tending the fires and beding down the animals. Some got blankets warpped around them while others. needed to go out one last time.

Cole headed out to the couch with a copy of Treasure island. He had been through it a dozen times as a kid, but he had not been through it in awhile. So he sat confortably reading it when his house guest returned looking refreshed and with a change of close. " You look nice dear...I mean McKenna." What a slip this woman was not even a friend yet. Perhaps she didn't hear him and that was just fine.

When she did as him a question he did look up fro his book to see her playing with Snow. He giggled and looked at the pair infront of the fire. "MMM...why don't you go lay down on the couch across the way and I will wake you up every two hours. Not that fun but you can get a cat nap. Though we prefer dogs naps here." Cole smiled and leaned over and tickled Snow's belly and tough her cheek. " Oh before you go to sleep ah did you like the bathroom?" He was kneeling and was at eye level with McKenna. He fought of any impulse to make it an intimate moment. " I was wondering because I was thinking about redoing it this year. I like the old tub though." Talking about plumming should kill the urge to kiss this woman but it was there but he wouldn't act on it. Even though every fiber of his being wanted to he quickly stood up. " I am going to take a bath now. Don't worry I will check on you soon." He moved out of the room quickly and closed the bathroom door. He clutched his fists repressiing all the sexual tension he felt. This woman was beautiful and he was not to act on any f these feelings. She was here by mistake not by fate or anythign like that. She would be pleasant company for a few weeks and that would be it. Then she would go back to her life. He began to undress and run the water. Alittle cold but that didn't matter to him.

Cole checked the door again so his guest would not burst in on him by acident. Or come back for anything he thought as he picked up her bra. In that instance her remembered all that was woman. Like lingerie soft delicate and beautiful, wonderful to the touch and the eye. He repectfully hung it on an empty towel rack and tested the water. It soon grew hot and except for the occasional puppy scartch at the door the cabin was silent. This woman would make a good wife, but as he soaked in the warm water Cole knew it would not be him. It had been years since she had been "home" and only after extensive travel around the world. This woman would not be happy here out in the wildreness. It was isloted and primative and she had said as much. It had bothered him alittle but then there was nothing really wrong with thinking that way. Some people just liked to travel or liked to be in crowded cities where food was a block way not miles or a hunting trip way.

He towelled off and dressed much the same as before but with clean clothes. Light brown work boots, blue jeans a solid forest green shirt and white long underwear. Once he was descent he walked out into the hall and back towards the living room. Chad the mischievious little fellow that he was playing on a kitchen chair. " Better your the one scratching at the door. Well go find McKenna....find McKenna," he said in a playful voice. The pup soon took off and was walking around on the woman...even a little pup paw batted her face. She blicked and wokeup alittle surprized. " Ah hello puppy was her reply. Came to take a dog nap too," McKenna asked in a sleepy voice before pushing herself up on her arms.

Cole quickly moved and picke dup the puppy." Sorry he just wanted to play." He kneeled down letting the pup run way and looked in her eyes. "How yeah feeling?" Cole without thinking gently brushed some of her long hair from her eyes. She looked fine and well wonder. " I think you are going to be fine. Ah what else can I do for you before you go back to sleep?"

McKenna was a beautiful woman and she was laying there on the couch. Though every part of him wanted to ask the question....Do you want to make love. He could not even justifing this woman. They had just met and though he was very roused in his pants he knew thay thoughts of her would have to be confined to fantasy alone. She looked so pretty cuddled up with that little fur ball and for a moment he saw her naked laying against him under blankets. Thing was its seemed she liked him some what. Sure she was used to a different typ eo man and his signals could be very off about how she acted but there was something more primal more basic.

After they talked Cole turned around to lay on the other long couch. He pulled off his boots and was about to lay down and pull the blanket over himself but then he heard her soft words," 'goodnight' Ah good night to you to McKenna." THen Cole thought well it could hurt and he got up and walked over to her and though she had her eyes closed she wasn't alseep. Cole slowly leaded over and gently kissed McKenna on the lips. "Good night hun. It really is nice to have a new guest staying here." He stood up but didn't walk away. He haft expect a flap next.

Cole smiled and looked over at her one more time before nodding to her a goodnight. The glance seemed to go through her and he saw a heart of a beautiful loving woman. It was summer and she was in the garden...his garden a flower in her hair and she was smiling up. The smell of the crackling fire brought him back down to earth. He wanted this woman to sleep and regain her strength. He tended the fire and looked back at her once again. When she was well and able to travel and have options he would see if she would have him. For now the kiss would have to last him as he bedded down for the night. She had not resisted and was not angried by his actions. Both would have been natural to have. This was surprize and it did not seem a bad one. He stared at the ceiling then over at her and wondered. There would be no nightmares tonight.

It was a simple good night kiss Cole thought rolling around on the couch trying to adjust even though it seemed to mold around his crame perfectly. He finally settled in laying there looking into the fire. This was fate? He did not know now. In time he would know now.

It seemed that McKenna's presents did have a positive effect on Cole that night. He had a soothing sleep for most of the night. Then the nightmares caused by witnessing the horrors war, the death, carnage, and fury came apon him in the early morning hours. He thrashed about the bed stiking out at nothing that was material. Hi body so unweildly that the couch moved on its short legs. The motions and noises was enough to have the husky Mary padd her way over to McKenna's sleeping area. Though she watched over her master hopeing to sense one of the demons that plagued him so she could chase it way.

As he lay next to Mckenna Cole retraced the steps of what just happen. Well it seemed the demons came to him again that night. It wasn't uncommon that a few times a week for him to have restless and violent nights. He never really had evidence of it unless he found himself some place else in the house. Other times the dogs would keep their distance the next day frightened by what had transpired the night before while he was asleep battling his demons.

Now though he attacked Mckenna he did not think it was bad, but well it was good enough to scare her he was sure of that. For alittle while he could just keep saying, " I am so sorry,"repeatedly. "This never happens. Well not often anyway." That much was lie but for now he had to put her at ease with him. "That wasn't me and it wasn't you I am just sorry to wake you it isn't wise to wake me is all. Bad habit from my past." He looked in her eyes understanding and filled with worry. "Could you lay with me just alittle bit? We can care for each other."

McKenna nodded and gently caressed his brow then his hair. At that moment out of a need to confort each other they kissed softly and longingly. Both seemed to be hurt and alone at that moment and they did what they could to make the other feel secure. Cole pulled her close to his chest and laying flat with his head on the pillow her hard her on top of him. "Godnight princess," She replied a whisper as reply but he was already on his way to a more peaceful dream land with her there. If he was not bothered by anything from the outside world he would sleep through the night in peace.

Cole had awoken before her and saw her snuggled in close to him. She had watched over him through the night it would seem. Well even if that had not been her intention he knew her close warm presence had helped him not only to fall asleep but be at peace with his demons for the rest of the night. He had used pills in the past to try and aid him with his problem but they left him dead to the world and did not really solve any problem. A sweet caring bed companion though seemed to make him feel safe. Having Mckenna close was nice but having her lay with him was even better. She had picked up his spirit. He like many of the bacholars that lived in the valley resolved not to get lonly no matter how bad things were. The days were filled with chores and hobbies and the evenings with food, drink, and good books. Still there was a void that a woman filled that no amount of work could fill. Mckenna was special, but most likely would be special for someone else. She had to be.

He listened to her breath and how her chest rose with each breath. How she looked pretty even as she slept. When a puppy might wonder over her unconsciose move was not to push it way but to pet it gently until it moved on. Without even knowing it she had been kind. With a little bit of manuevering and adjustment Cole was about to lift her up and carry her back to where she was sleeping before. She stirred alittle bit and moaned out, "MMMM...Cole let me sleep more honey. " She reached out and brushed is cheek."

"Don't worry you can McKenna just getting you to a better spot to sleep sweety," was Cole's reply. He then gently set her down on the couch and wrapped her up in the large warm blanket that looked like it was of native Indian design. He was thick, warm, and black with a red line with ridges in it ever few inches on it. Once she was tucked in and a pillow under her head him moved on to the kitchen. He looked back and smiled at Chad who had taken up watch on the arm rest. The good thing about the couches where they were extra long so one's head would lay flat and not bent on an arm rest. They were a factory mistake so he had bought them cheap. They were soft and looked nice but mucd to big to put in an apartment like the factory intended. They were among the interesting things he had filled the house with over the years.

Morning Chores kept Cole busy. First making sure all the fires were going strong and filling up all the inside wood boxes. When he did go outside though he saw the snow was high and there were flurries. This was not good for McKenna if she wanted to get back to civilization. For him it was a difficulty. He had extra supplies he thought but as he walked inside with another load of would he realized he missed people. It was because of McKenna's visit that had done that. Cole smiled to himself as he let out the dogs and looked back at McKenna as Chad hopped down and followed the crowd outside yapping away. The little herd did its business while some found it fun playing on the would pile. Once all the dogs were in and water dishes filled Cole went to the bathroom. He stripped down and remembered he had a guest so he closed the door. He showered shaved and brushed his teeth. His father had always taught him it didn't matter who was around you took care fo yourself. He cleaned up and was soon in fresh clothes.

It was breakfast time and after looking over what he had it seemed like cheese grits, eggs and scrapple where the menu this morning. He didn't think about whether she would like it or not but figured McKenna was pretty easy going though about most things. Once everything was going on the stove he noticed from the corner of his eye that McKenna was waking up. She cleared her throat and said good morning.

Cole turned to her and smiled, " Good morning to you I hope you like what I am making for breakfast. If you can hold off on a shower a little bit and enjoy it all." He glanced at the food for a moment and saw he had a few minutes to talk. "Ah about last night. It is a problem I have and you have got to know I never meant to hurt you when that happen. I ...I don't know what it happens but well it does and you not running away and staying with me meant alot." He caughtiously leaned foraward and kissed McKenna on the forehead. " You being there really meant a lot and helped me. Thank you."

McKenna was a little perplexed how to feel about this whole situation. It was as she thought though. He had not meant to hurt her and the answers were not given but they would be if time would allow them to become closer. For now she would be a friend she thought. "Ah your welcome." She gave him an understanding hug and a peck on the cheek when he leaned down to meet with her hug. "Need help with this?" She moved in and began working on the eggs. " Oh have any bread for toast?

Cole walked torwards the pantry and thought she and he would be alright together for now. After the snows would still be a mystery.

That morning Cole walked around with an old smile on his face. He and McKenna had reached some level of intamacy. Sure some people that were merely friend or greating another would think nothing of a passking kiss. This though as the more intimate kind where as even in passing love was felt and convied. Now he was truly ahead of himself. The had merely been close the night before and now acted in some ways like a intimate couple. Thing was they were not a couple just two people put together in close quarters. Sure it was good to get along but it seemed to him at least Mckenna would still have a place to sleep even if she did not give him a peck. The night before what she had done could not be forgottten and was a act of kindness.

Now over breakfast there were smiles giggles and the glance at the other. Sure when you share a meal with someone your attention is often on them but eyes drawn to each other was not common. He looked deep into McKenna's deep green eyes a few times and saw the spirit of this woman. She was a good soul. Breakfast and cleaning on went on with a little bit of joy in the common tasks. It was the same with the chores. McKenna' smile seemed to turn the mondane into something which it seemed its soul purpose was to make joy. Though Cole had to admit the puppies were always fun to take care of and the fact that they warmed up to McKenna spoke volumes. Animals were sensitive to moods and people. They only strived it seemed to keep good company.

He sat to read as McKenna's professional side came out. She took many pictures of the puppies in all their playful glory. Some climbing, running, playing, nursing all great shots he was sure. Cole found it hard to read not because of the noise but McKenna's infectious laughter. She played with the pups and though injuried had no problem rolling around with them just for the fun of it. Cole found himself smiling and kept looking over at her as she took the photos. Every time though he had a picture of beauty. It was not sexual in nature though he knew having her in his bed would be a passionate delight. It was a natural pure beauty like a flower. No changes were required perfect and unchanged by man. As he looked down at the pages of the book he could not help but thing of what would have happen if the intimacy continued the night before. It lasted all night but if the next step was taken passionate kissing which led to more kissing and touching. Perhaps undressing and then more intimate acts. Cole longed to see her naked but he kept these feelings in check. How could you simply ask that of a woman especially here where he could not be sure she would make the choice freely. He watched her again and saw her click off a few shots then with a look pain moved her shoulder.

She was in pain and he could help her without it being overly sexual. As McKenna changed film kneeling near her bag COle moved up behind her kneeling between her legs and gently put his hands down on her shoulders. He could tell she was bruised so he was gentle in applying pressure. " Feel better McKenna?" He asked leaning over and whispering in her ear.

" MMM..Yes thank you been aching all day. You have strong hands they feel Mmm...good."

"Your welcome you have very beautiful hair. A woman's should be long it is the most femine I think really. Your hair is so long a nd flowing it seems perfect for you." Cole gently moved it to the side gently as he moved in on her shoulder." Ah can I ask you something?"

" Sure mmm..ask away that is cool."

"Why aren't you married?"
