Here are some of the shells I've been finding while Snorkeling. These are what are called Fighting Conch. (All were dead when found. ie. nothing larger than bacteria was living inside the shells.)

The coin in the middle is an American Quarter Dollar to give some size reference. Oh, the larger shells are adults.

P.S. Bear, I managed to take a couple of pictures today. we'll see how they turn out.

I see those shells washed up on the beach from time to time...you don't want to step on one barefoot. I'm still chuckling about that dude with a pocketful of live ones. :D

I've got my claws crossed . . .

We'll see how the pictures come out. Unfortunately taking pictures while snorkeling isn't easy, you move too much and are limited to how long you can stay down and set up the shot.

I'm hoping to have time next week to haul a tank down to the area we've been at and play with the camera then.

Yeah stepping on one, or a broken one smarts.

Up north we had a worse one though. It's called a Razor Clam, (because the shell is the shape of the old straight razor handles.) Stepping on one of those is truly nasty as they can cut you.

The guy with his pockets loaded was a lot of fun to watch. It's always fun to watch people when Momma Nature repsonds in ways people don't expect.

I've had one of those for as long as I can remember-- I'm ashamed to think that I never thought about identifying it before.

My Floridian inlaws sent it to me, I think. :)
