At last, the Snippettsville maps! Please don't suggest amendments unless we've made fundamental errors. It will be easier to change the stories!

Map 1 shows Snippettsville in relation to its environs, including and Green Lake. 'The City' (as yet unnamed), where several of the population earn their living is assumed to be off the map to the south and Mayson, the county seat, off the map to the north.

Map 3

Map 3 shows the street plan of Snippettsville, with those businesses so far identified located. You'll need a key to make sense of it, so here goes:

1 - Golden Oaks
2 - Snippettsville First and High Schools (Middle School in Mayson)
3 - Police Chief's Offices - ex-Railroad Depot (Closed)
4 - Post Office
5 - St. Anne's RC Church
6 - Presbyterian Church
7 - Darla's Hair Shack
8 - Oldtimer Antique Shop
9 - Bank
10 - (Not specified)
11 - Carr's Store
12 - Hannah McGuire's House
13 - Hannah's Diner
14 - Snippett's Mill (location of)
15 - Station: Gas Station & Carry-Out
16 - Charlie's Harlels
17 - County Fairgrounds

The river needs a name - suggestions welcomed.

It will be relatively easy to add new businesses and/or dwellings to this map.

Alex, Congratulations on the maps. I like the colours, the simplicity and I appreciate very much the time you've spent on getting them all to this point. Thank you.

:) Wow ADK,

Nice looking maps with very useful grid scales.

To say the least I am impressed. I take my hat off to you.

Map 4

I would like to open discussion on Map 4. I was going to wait until Alex posted here at the other end of my day, but in order to allow for time zone differences I need to post now.

For some reason, this map still looks not quite right to me. Of all the maps I have seen, this one seems to make me think the most. I feel that the facilities around one end of the Lake are closer together than they would be if they were here in New Zealand - so it may be that my thinking is too 'kiwiish' for American standards...?

I think the Camper Ground and Cabins should be in the shoreline, not overlooking the parking area. Here in New Zealand camping grounds are generally in areas that are asthetically pleasant to spend time in, good views. For the life of me I can't get around the idea of looking directly at a parking area.

I have thought more on the camper and cabin facilities and I would prefer them to be several miles further along the Lake's edge... perhaps extending Green Lake Road Alex...?

I know you're relooking at the hike/bike and ranger tracks (since our discussion this morning).

Map 4

As Wildsweetone has indicated, there seems to be a general feeling that the lake shore area needs reviewing. This map is probably the simplest to amend, so please, feel free to comment.

It will also affect Maps 1 and 2, but I still have the original copy of Map 2 and can redraw the paths and roads without any problems, and Map 1 should be amendable without too much bother!

I'd rather get them right, so before I start amending, speak! I'll give this a couple of days before I actually touch the maps.

The area in I4 looks to me to be an ideal place for some really secluded higher class cabins(?) which can best be reached by boat. Dun't really marrer, just an observation.

I agree with Sweet though about everything being a tad too close together.

I'm no geographer but it seems odd to me that a lake of this small size and not sea-fed wouldn't be likely to have a beach, but as I said I'm not a geographer and the beach could easily have been imported a la Tennerife. This of course assumes that the word beach means a stretch of sand.

Gauche

Valid points, Gauche, as are some others the Kiwi lady has mentioned to me. This is exactly the sort of feedback I need. I know I said I didn't want to redraw the maps, but I enjoy it...

I do have a query for those in the know. On map 1, how many of the roads crossing the Interstate would actually connect with it? On the revised version of Map 1, Mayson has disappeared off the map and is presumed to be further north. I'll post it ASAP, but there have been other comments...

some points because if i don't post them here i will lose them... they are just my thoughts...

1. The hike trail needs to run alongside the ranger trail - so there will be two lines going across the northern side of the lake.

2. I've just discovered that the water flow runs from east to west (thanks Alex - and yes I'm normally this thick). The river that runs through Snip needs to be the main river running from the Lake. i.e. Green River. The township would not have been built on a tributory if the logging around the lake area was using Green Lake for floating. The tributory would be better running to the north of Snip and joining up with Green River somewhere in the vicinity of B4 (going on Map 1 in this thread). After the (yet to be named) tributory joins Green River, the River should be wider.

3. The ranger trail needs to be shown as going across the northern area of the Lake in Map 1.

I can't think of anything more at the moment.

The Ranger Trail should be more properly called a Fire Road, but it doesn't need a parellel hikers trail. Hikers along the north side of the lake would follow the 4WD fire road known locally as "Ranger Trail". The ranger trail is probably an unimproved dirt road, graded and packed at one time, but probably not graveled or oiled. About the equivalent of a farm road between fields, but through the forest instead of fields.

In the Summertime, Ranger Trail is passible for most 2WD vehicle that have reasonable ground clearance -- pickup trucks, SUVs, Volkswagen Beetles, etc. In wintertime, or during the rainy season, A 4WD would be necessary if the trail is passable to vehicles at all. In Midwinter, Snowmobiles, Snowshoes and Skis would provide the only land access to the east end of Green Lake

The "Hiker's Trail" along the south side of the lake is only about 4' wide and suitable for pedestrians and pack mules.

There are probably other hiking and 4WD trails throughout the area that lead up into the surrounding hills and forests, but those would not necessarily show on maps of the scale ADK has drawn -- many would not show on any map of any scale, being little more than game trails.

Water generally flows East To West, but at any given point on a river, it can flow in any direction. The Willamette River and the South Fork are good examples: The Willamette flows generally South to North and the South Fork drains the East Slope into the Middle Fork flowing generally West To East.

The North and South Forks of the Willamette River are misnamed, BTW because the East Fork and West Fork names were already taken by tributaries further along the river. ;)

Also, it isn't uncommon for townships to form on tributaries or where tributaries join the main river. The water from a tributary is generally cleaner than water from the main river because it has less chance to pick up sediments and other pollutants.

Alex,

The maps look great! You do good work. In reference to your question about roads connecting to the Interstate: in an area of this size which is mainly rural, it would be uncommon to find more than two Interstate exits. Obviously, Green Lake Road should connect. The other logical choice would be the road in C-2, for direct access to the Road House. The other road going from the Road House to the Interstate might need to be changed if it is not a connector, since it would then dead-end into the Interstate. Just a thought...

gauchecritic,

Many lakes (and small ponds, for that matter) have man-made beaches. They are formed by bringing in trucks of sand or pebbles.

Happy day,

Revised Maps

Revised versions of Maps 1,2 and 4 are posted now. I've taken comments into account. Hopefully these are the final ones, as they've been my 'Lost Weekend'!

I haven't shown any paths on Map 4, but I would assume that the facilities would be linked along the shoreline.

What is hopefully the truly final versions of the maps are now posted above. The Lodge has been moved around the bay and some cabins added. The Sailing Club is now larger and stands where the Lodge was, and there's a chandler now, too.

We have also added a Bird sanctuary and a Nudist Camp (!)

Have fun, folks.

Alex

wow Alex, these maps are looking awesome. You've spent so much time on them and it shows. Fantastic job dear! :rose: :rose: :rose: :)

nudist camp? *rolling eyes*

Iothane of Umbra

It's amazing how much knowledge and information one picks up in a group like this. Courtesy of Quasimodem, I have now learned about Iothane of Umbra, an eleventh century Norse/Celtic lady who used to tour her estates wearing not very much at all.

We have therefore determined that the nudist camp will be known as the Lady Iothane Institute campgrounds. Not only that, but the island on which the camp is located, to the East of Baggett Island, will be known as Umbra Island.

So there.

Alex.

Yo! Alex, way cool. I like how your minds works.

Perdita (still learning how to read maps, haha) :rose:

The maps have now been added to the 'Sticky'. No further changes will be made to the maps on this thread.

Further comments will be taken into consideration, however.
