So, this time of year has hit me again...

Forced to endure streaming eyes and nose every time i pick up a piece of chalk (which is often since i teach), walk through a field (no idea what it is i react to since it's not on the standard test), or enter a new room/store/ perfume or deodorant section. i have prevailed upon my doctor to give me eye drops and nasal spray. Phew...

Only one problem though, they don't start working right away...so what do i do while they are taking effect?

Help!

By the way Marquis, not only did i get to try green tea today, someone else made it for me! That was cool. It needs sugar, but i like it, i bought some one the way home. How long do most of you let it steep?

Oh and in case some of didn't read the isolated blurt thread, all my kinky stuff i ordered came in today, in nondescript packaging, with a pretty yellow sticker...

Haha I love that sticker! It's on pretty pretty much every package I get. I guess it's my fault for being a former peta member and ordering needles and clamps... But good luck with the allergies!! They don't sound fun

I too have some sort of scent sensitivity. It's mostly with perfumes - they make me feel queasy and make me want to breath something else. I don't like perfumes, you could say.

They piss me off. i actually told my brother, "You're not getting in my car within an hour after smoking, and you can't have that Versace Jeans shit on. You wear too much of it."

It's a new car and smells nice. i don't want him ruining it.

i actually almost passed out when i was on a tour of a wood shop. The varnish room was ventilated, but not enough. It seems to be something that gets worse with age. i actually can't stand that Lysol spray, either - to me the smell gets stronger the longer i sit in the room until i can't take it. Here we only have Febreze.

i've read the warnings and i THINK i can continue to take other allergy stuff while these are settling in. i'll wait out the weekend though, or at least tonight.

I try to steep my tea in very hot water for just a few minutes. I think the wrong things (tannins specifically) start to come out of the tea after a few minutes and the taste starts to get bitter.

Hmm. i kind of like it a little bit bitter. My mum's uncle apparently used to say, "T'aint tay until a meece (mouse) can run across it," and both my brothers steep their tea for 15 minutes, but mum and i go for 2 or 3.
i'm not sure what kind of tea is common in Ireland, but t'aint green. But i digress.

i do that a lot...

Both my mum and my grandmum swear by Russell Hobbs (i think that's it, i'm not going down to check) electric kettles. i never did get my grandmum to stop testing the kettle by putting her hand over the spout, despite the fact it stops automatically at a full boil. Best of all, if you use a filtered water, like Brita, you don't need to descale your kettle.

edited to add: Yup, Russell Hobbs US and the UK ones are nicer. We have the first UK one, i think, but with a metal lid.

I'm an impatient person, I steep my tea till the water changes color. Then I leave the tea bag in till I'm done drinking it. So it'll go from nearly water like to really bitter. *shrugs* I don't care, I like it both ways.

Using loose herbs, no bag... I prefer 3-5 minutes. Around 5 minutes it usually gets bitter and that's just chamomile!

Honey better as a sweetener unless you're diabetic, then Splenda is the least likely to cause headaches or stomach upset.

I love chamomile (5 flowers), thyme 1/8 tsp and mixed mint (peppermint and spearmint) 1/4 tsp. I make a pot, brew it dark, then pour it over ice into a normal 2qt pitcher. (Using a coffee filter to keep out any leas.)

More thyme is added if I have chest congestions and I have a few teabags made up (myself) for when i really don't feel good.

I don't know why, but even plain mint tea tastes different when I brew it from loose dried herbs as opposed to from teabags.

As for my usual tea. Red Rose. Grandparents were Canadian. Only problem is the teabags in the US are only 2/3 the size of those sold in Canada. I swear I need to import my own Red Rose, Salt and Vinegar Chips -stonger in Canada- and Coffee Crisps!

I like your style.

I use tea bags to brew the massive amounts of iced tea I drink, but I'll probably find a place to buy decent quality green and white tea in bulk sometime soon.

When I want a good cup, I have an assortment of exotic couture teas I keep in labeled jars in a dark cupboard. There is no comparison to the fresh taste you get from loose tea to teabags, teabags are purely an invention of convenience.

Green Tea I don't let steep too long - 5 or 10 minutes max for me- or it gets bitter. I love the Arizona Green tea with ginseng and honey. very yummy.

Allergies - I have many. Started with the sinus hayfever ones year round - have take prescription meds for this the last 20 years or so.

Patenol eye drops work very well for me (perscription). Plain saline tears eye drops are handy to have if your eyes get itchy during the day too.

You should also be able to take the off the shelf benadryl antihistamine with your prescription too. Alone it does nothing for me, but when added to the other stuff is sometimes enough to get me through the day.

You can also try taking Ranitidine (Tagamet, Zantac - for stomach acid but they also act as a histamine blocker). I am taking 300 mg of this a day along with two scrpts of allergy med (Clarinex and Allegra 180) and I also take Singulair.

When my system is really acting up I take the following during the day:
Clarinex, Allegra, Benedryl, Ranitidine, Singulair, and Hydroxizine.

Nasal spray wise I have yused Flonase and Nasonex - the flonase was too strong for me - it caused nosebleeds.

Zyrtec is another option but it makes me feel tired the next day so I don't use it.

Hopefully something of this will help you.

I use claritin in the morning, and benedryl at night. I've got a script for zyrtec, but I can't afford it. I tried flonase, but it made me sneeze so hard that it realy wasn't worth it.

Hmm, that's really interesting about ranitidine. i used to take cimetidine for reflux, but i stopped. i have a habit of stopping medications that aren't totally necessary, which annoys the hell out of some doctors. My own family doctor has come to accept it reluctantly, because i don't make foolish judgements. For example i may not take my controller inhaler for my asthma in the spring, summer, and fall, but as soon as it gets cool, out it comes because cold air is my biggest trigger. i also never stop my antidepressants because i know i'll relapse eventually by bitter experience. And if course i take antibiotics for the full script.

Benadryl is good for weekends, but it really makes me dopey and i teach Grade 1/2. Can't take it during the school day. Period. They tire me out enough.
She (doctor) gave me Flonase and Livostin (eye drops). i've been on Flonase before and other than the sore throat it's okay. i also have Rhinocort (nasal turbuhaler) around here somewhere for my sinus infections but i haven't had any recently. The only problem is that the corticosteroids can wreak havoc with weight loss.
i also don't want to add five meds to my current meds because it will increase the odds of something interacting. There is a theoretical danger of antihistamines/decongestants interacting with antidepressants, and i think if i was taking five of them the odds would go waaaay up. They can also block the beneficial effects of antidepressants, which is why even my cold meds get run by the pharmacy before i buy.

That being said, thanks for the go ahead on taking something else with the Flonase and eye drops - i bought some Aerius (desloratidine) on recommendations and if i'm still sniffy Sunday night i'll add that. And you may want to look at Tetley green tea as they have a honey lemon ginseng one. i can't recommend it because i haven't tried it yet. i meant to pick up some Darjeeling too but i forgot. The Prince of Wales hotel in Niagara on the Lake does the authentic tea with sandwiches or cream desserts, and i've loved Darjeeling ever since i went there.

By the way does anyone else actually pronounce it the way it's written? PREscription? It's like Wednesday, February, and library, among others. When i was doing JK i had one mother and one dad tell me that their kids were correcting them. Fortunately they found it a good thing that their kids were learning the right pronunciations. i'm sure it annoyed the hell out of some of them. Prescription is pretty subtle, though.

Please excuse the verbosity but it's 5 am - i've been sleeping for most of the day and night off and on. Unusual, but damn nice! Maybe i'm fighting something off.
