Any cigar smokers out there? What's your favorite brand? Favorite type? Favorite ring gauge?

.... and all I'm taking with me are the pieces of my heart

and all I'll leave are smoke rings in the dark....

Sorry, just had a Gary Allan moment...

Hoyo de Monterrey and Excalibur, preferably #1 (the big one, about a 54 ring), and preferably in a Maduro wrapper.......Carney

This is something I'd be interested in knowing a little more about. I've smoked nearly everything else, but never cigars. I had cigars as a minor plot point in one of my stories, did a little superfluous googling, and came up with Cohibas and Gurkha Cubans and some basic stuff about humidors.

What does the ring gauge mean? I like the visuals of the clipping and lighting ritual, makes for a good dramatic moment in a screenplay. And how do you know if it's a good cigar? I mean, with wines, you know the vintner, you know the year. Do certain years of tobacco crops produce better cigars than others, like wines?

Great little tidbits of information to have for a story, if one of the characters happened to be a cigar afficionado.

Hand rolled cigars (hencho a mano) cigars are made up of three types of tobacco, fillers, binders and wrappers. The filler is the shredded stuff inside, the bider goes around that to hold it together and the wrapper goes around that to hold the first two layers together and make a smooth, neat looking package. Most cigars use tobaccos from different places depending on the taste they're trying to achieve. Cigars reffered to as "Puros" use fillers, binders and wrappers all from the same country.
Good cigars are like good wines in the respect that everyone likes something different. I prefer Dominican Republic cigars as a rule. They're mild and have a taste and aroma I enjoy, to me, that makes them a good cigar.
