Marie was frightened. Summer was ending and college would soon be starting. God, she was leaving a small hamlet in northern Ohio and going to Ohio State all teh way down in Columbus. She had been popular in high school. Beta Club, cheerleader, National Honor Society-all the things her parents wanted her to do. Her parents were so puritanical. She hadn't been allowed to date, except for a couple dances at school, she had never even kissed a boy. She had heard so many stories about college-drugs, alcohol, sex, parties, you name it, she heard it. The thought scared her. How would she fit in? She had a scholarship for her grades and during her interview, she was invited to try out as a cheerleader for the men's basketball team. She didn't really consider it when offered but the more she thought about it, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea. She could meet people, assert herself as a stranger in a strange land. No one would know her anyway, how shy she was-she could be what she wanted and act how she wanted. Who would really know how shy she really was. She knew it would mean being around the guys on the team and that made her feel awkward. There would be black guys too, something not seen around her small town. It could be a time of fear and trepidation or she could look at it as an adventure. She would be away from her parents which is all she really wanted anyway. An Ohio State cheerleader! How many girls would try out? Could she even compete against them? Change her hairstyle, get some new clothes, it might work.
