I'm traveling around to relatives over Christmas. Yesterday, at my brother-in-law's, who is a Republican Party official in my state, he informed me that he had just switched to the Democratic Party because he can't stand what the Republicans had become. He's somewhat of a redneck, which has helped him in party influence. Although he knew my political views, we've never argued with each other over politics. Thanks for the unexpected Christmas present, dude. :)

I'd be curious to know what tipped him over the edge

I didn't ask and won't ask. We've done very well by not getting into politics in depth. I'm just as happy that he came to this point without any overt input from me (although that he bothered to voluntarily tell me tells me he knows what I think about it). It's also significant to me that his role has been to be an honest broker in an environment where corruption was rampant around him and people habitually turned to him to put the situation back more on an even keel. His public decision will have an impact in the Republican Party in this state.
