Slut

This word has no meaning for me. In fact, I take that back, it has a weird reverse meaning. It seems to be used as an insult and yet it only ever seems to imply positive traits. A woman’s sexually successful – great! I like her all the more. A woman’s not shy – great! She sounds like a winner to me. She’s had two boyfriends in a month – great! She’s not some wimp who’s afraid to get rid of a looser. She’s got two boyfriends at the same time – great! Sounds kinky. She’s always flirting – great! That’s so much better than boring.

Worse. Try as hard as I might I can’t think of a time when I’ve ever heard “slut” being used when it wasn’t one woman applying it to another. I think society’s presented some fucked up values to female-kind but the word “slut” as an insult seems only to be kept going by jealous women. They do tend to be so clearly jealous when they use it too.

At this point I’ll say that I’m not out to snipe at anyone here using the term slut in their name; the chances are they’re using it in a sexy way anyway.

Discuss. 50 marks.

I don't think the fact that a woman is sexual sucessful is a positive trait. Honesty is a possitive trait. Caring is a positive trait. Being passionate about a cause can be a possitive trait. Sleeping with a lot of people? Makes me wonder how valuble she thinks others are.

What's wrong with sleeping with a lot of people? Wha'ts wrong with sharing your enjoyment of sex with others? This is provided that you're being safe about it, and not hurting anyone.

How does it devalue someone to sleep with more than one person at a time? If she's not hiding what she's doing, then what's the problem?

By the way, Paganangel calls me a slut all the time. He means it as a compliment.

Sleeping with who she wants to - is sexually successful - is a positive trait.

Sleeping with lots of people for other reasons - isn't sexually successful - isn't a positive trait.

This question of value always interests me. Are the other people in this equation not able to think for themselves?

I have been called a slut as a term of endearment.
Yes! It can be quite sexy as well as comforting to hear the term.

As far as promiscuity? Well, when two people are giving informed consent to an act, how can it be wrong?

"Informed" implies that both parties have laid all their cards on the table. Is this a freindly fuck? Is it a romantic one night stand? Is there the potential for more?

Furthermore, if being a slut means you are somehow morally devalued, screw it. A true slut is a lady who is open, honest and comfortable with herself, her needs and what she wants. Those are what makes being a slut a positive trait.

Starting today ...

I have a new resolve: to reclaim my sluthood.

I think I still can remember a few tricks *smirks*

I never said sleeping with a lot of people was wrong. I said it makes me wonder how valuable she thinks others are. The term slut implies that someone has sex with a lot of people. Not that her reasons for doing so. How can you assume someone you don't know, who others call a slut, is 'sexually successful'?

1)What do you consider "a lot of people"?

2)What makes that a bad thing? I don't think it devalues them at all.

The term slut is used as an insult to imply that someone sleeps around for no other reason than to sleep out. That's a load of hogwash.

The term slut is applied to people who are seen to sleep around despite any reason for doing so.

I've claimed the word slut as my own. For me, it's empowering. Why should the guys have all the fun?

I have heard guys use the term...although strangely, they tend to only use it when they aren't getting any from the girl.

The term "slut" has a lot of negative connotation to me. For whatever reason people chose to use it, I have seen it used to hurt and ostracize girls who do enjoy their sexuality. In anger or just to make themselves feel good, people who I once called friends used to hurl that insult to others. Why do they do it? Maybe its because they are not comfortable enough with their own sexuality...maybe it makes them feel good. Maybe they did not know what good sex was.

Why are most sex-related degredation terms feminine? On this board, we celebrate a woman's (and man's) ability to enjoy sex, and yet, I am constantly surrounded everyday by people who fear people knowing they have sex, much less enjoy it.

I heard that word used to refer to me more than a couple times, and although I would like to empower myself by embracing the term "slut" as positive, just like the word "bitch", I have heard it too many times to do so.

Lilminx, It's the speaker who decides what 'a lot of people' is. For them it might be twenty, it might be four. Again, I haven't said that sleeping with people is a bad thing.

Sixth, yes, slut is used with that connotation. I simply don't agree that if someone is called a slut I should assume that's a positive trait.

Three snaps in "Z" formation!

It has taken me 10 years to become comfortable with my sexuality and my sexual past- mainly due to the guilt I felt from what society deems acceptable for women.

It is so refreshing to belong to a community that is as open minded as this one :)

I hear you mz-scarlett...I've often felt guilty about my sexuality, but as I got older I stopped giving credence to what others thought and was happy to join the lit community

i guess im like diablo grl i personally dont find the word empowering for me ... i don't like someone calling me a slut

one thing i dont understand is whenever i've been called it its been because i've turned a guy down although one time i got called a lesbian and that made me laugh :)

So, women get called sluts by women when they have a lot of sex.. and women gat called sluts by men when they refuse to have sex with the guy.

Paradoxical.

Shush, slut.

:)

I've always liked that "shush" thing that some guys do.

Hey, Sixth, move your hand a little so I can see your face.

It'll be like you're waving, I promise.
