I don't think leeches actually hurt. I've had one on me before when I lived in Georgia as a kid. Now... getting them off is another story.

When I was in 1st and 2nd grade, I lived in Augusta, GA. They have some pretty swampy woods there. My friends and I would just go "exploring", which sometimes entailed jumping in streams and ponds and stuff. We'd get home and have a slug in our hair or what have you. No big deal.

my mom used to work in a hospital and they had leeches there to use on patients (i don't know why so i'm going to stray from that topic) but my mom would come home with these horrible stories about it. and when they were done with the leeches they couldn't put them in the same container because they'd eat each other. urgh.

At first glance, I had no idea what I was looking - everything that went through my mind was nasty! shivers.

No, they don't tend to hurt. They have some sort of numbing agent in their saliva so they can suck as much blood possible without their host noticing. But it is rather disconcerting to look down after getting out of a lake to see a few attached to your legs gorging themselves on your blood. And yes, it's my experience that those suckers suck, and don't want to come off until they can't hold anymore. They go from skinny little things, to big fat horrid blood laden things. Truly disgusting, but I suppose harmless, and they did actually use them for medical practices (may still in some cases - dunno).

What exactly are chiggers? I've heard of them, but don't really know what they are or do.

There was another link which lead to his nettles and snails session. lol the things kinky people will dream up. It makes buttplugs with toy ducks trailing behind seem child's play. I do love nature, but yikes! I give them a 6 for originality, and a 10 on the creepy crawly meter. I think I see a new dare for Fear Factor in this one (if they haven't already done it.)
