skunked

we just used what we had. we're following the citrus trend that has been sweeping the nation by storm ... so citrus dish soap is what we had.

I specified Dawn Lemon because of Dawn's grease cutting performance.

I'm big on using generic equivalents, but there are a few name brands -- like Dawn Dish Detergent -- that live up to their advertising and just work better than generics.

I don't know of any specific product that would improve on what you've done to remove the smell from the house, although a vanilla scent air freshener would probably help without making your headache worse.

You might want to find a copy of "How To Clean Almost Anything" in the local library or bookstore -- it's got a lot of proven methods for dealing with odors and stains in it. (I don't have a copy, but my daughter swears by hers -- I've only gotten one call for help since she bought it. ;))

I know this is after the fact but ... try telling your dog NEVER FUCK WITH SKUNKS!!!

I've had Rotties for 24 yrs - two @ 12 yrs each and now a Rottie X. One of the first things I always do (after street proofing them - ie NEVER GO ON THE RD!!) is skunk proof them.

Take them to a place where you'll see a skunk or stop the car when you see one and tell the dog repeatedly NO GAME! NO CHASE! STOP ! LOOK ONLY!

I've TOLD my X that a few times pointing to skunks at the side of the rd etc.

Last night both of them (other isa Bichon that my Ma had) were 30ft ahead of me and when they walked in front of the car to go home from our walk I saw both of them freeze. I mean they both just PLANTED. Didn't move. I said "Katie?" and she didn't even look back. I got to the front of the car and there was skunk the size of a Bichon about 8 ft away !! I mean this turkey would have had stinkoid glands the size of a melon!

After 10 seconds the skunk just turned and walked away. I put the dogs in the car, sat down and my heart started beating again. It coulda bin a DIZaster. That close both dogs, the car and my ass woulda got a blast too. You coulda smelled it from where you are!!

Both Rotties met - and I mean MET - skunks probably 12 or so times each and NEVER got skunked. They just froze and even if the meeting was almost nose to nose - at the end of a hedgerow at the end of a driveway where they just came together - when the dog freezes the skunk comes down off its handstand and walks away. They spray ONLY as a last resort and even if they're 2 feet from the dog, if the dog isn't doing anything stupid the skunk will walk. I've seen my last 2 Rotties actually go nose to nose with skunks when they came upon each other like that, say HI and then just walk away like they had no interest in each other.

So cool. I was really proud of her last night to know that she'd listened, it had gone IN and she reacted the right way when it did happen. At that range the slightest agro move on the part of the dog and booom and you know when a skunk really lets loose on a dog that close it doesn't even smell like skunk. Smells like an Iraqi gas attack or something!

So it's been almost 30 YEARS now of walking dogs almost always at night in an area where they're EVRYWHERE and so far so good. Not ONE skunking. It sure beats having to DE-skunk them.

An ounce of prevention and all that ...

SweetErica - funi story. Wish I'd had a camera. Truth is they were probably trying to eat it!

GO SKUNK!!

A scientifically created and proven skunk remedy (for humans...but I don't think it'll hurt pets as long as you're careful around the eyes):
1 pint of 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 Tablespoon dish detergent

Mix in a large container, and apply. Let it sit for a few minutes and rinse well. Repeat if necessary.

Blue- there's this stuff called Nature's Miracle that's non-toxic, natural, and fabric safe that might work. It should be available in any pet store (or maybe Walmart).

heh.
Just as the smell was leaving the house, and S/O thought it was safe to walk her on the path again...

dumbass gets herself sprayed again last night.

I'm just venting, ya'll can ignore me.

anywho, I told a friend of mine last night, and he said when it happens to his father's dogs, he douches them ... anyone heard of this... does it work?

I only ask, because we've used the baking soda/peroxide/soap mix... and we want to go easier on her skin, and stop stripping color off her coat...

and I also know, that that stuff is just vinegar and water or something like it, and I was going to cheap out and just buy the vinegar - and then I remembered that the vinegar didn't do much of anything...

ugh... stupid dog. I love her.. but... oi.

Did you try a vinegar, baking soda, and soap mix? Maybe if you sprinkle the baking soda on the coat, pour the baking soda and soap mixture over, rub it in, and let it sit? I wonder if it's the bubbling action that breaks the chemical bonds of the skunk spray that works?

My guess would be Dawn dish detergent.. if "dawn takes greese out of your way" then why not oil.. kinda the same thing
