SINS OF THE FATHER by Lawrence Block

4 stars

Its the first book of the Matt Scudder Series. Scudder is a former New York City police detective, now a private eye and alcoholic; his girl friend, Elaine, is a call girl.

In this book a hooker named Wendy is murdered, and her gay room mate hangs himself. Scudder is hired by the family to learn what he can about Wendy. More people die by the end.

I read it twice, it was better the 2nd time. Block always gets the facts right but the pieces always fit together perfectly. With real noir the pieces rarely go together well.

Love me some Lawrence Block. Three of my favorite modern literary characters are Matthew Scudder, Bernie Rhodenbarr, and Evan Tanner. (Evan Tanner more for the creative background than the other two.)

The Sins of the Fathers, Eight Million Ways to Die, and When the Sacred Ginmill Closes, are still my favorite Scudder books.

And of course, the fact that he started writing in soft-porn/sleaze crime stories (Sheldon Lord / Andrew Shaw) makes it all the better.
