Varying in height between 25 and 50 meters, each supertree features tropical flowers and various ferns climbing across its steel framework. The large canopies also operate as temperature moderators, absorbing and dispersing heat, as well as providing shelter from the hot temperatures of Singapore's climate to visitors walking beneath.
The project is part of a redevelopment scheme to create a new downtown district in the Marina Bay area, on Singapore's south side. Project organizers hope Gardens by the Bay will become an eco-tourist destination showcasing sustainable practices and plants from across the globe.

Lee Kuan Yew, the first prime minister of the Republic of Singapore, said the project would "showcase what we can do to bring the world of plants to all Singaporeans," adding that the gardens would become "the pride of Singapore."

Bridges dubbed "skywalks" have been erected connecting several of the higher 50-meter supertrees (the same height as the Arc de Triomphe in Paris), letting visitors stroll between them and view the gardens from dizzying heights.

That is so cool!

Lots of climbing vines and plants that can thrive in the weirdest of places. Some cities (most) have a hard time getting trees to grow.

Very innovative. Me like much!

they look amazing - i'd love to walk on those high walkways, looks magical! there are 2 or was it 3(?) biomes as well, and the site's spread across 250 acres

I see Singapore also has a giant Ferris wheel, just like London, Vegas, etc. I don't know who decided every major location on Earth needs a giant Ferris wheel, but I suspect it might be someone in the giant Ferris wheel industry.

They could be used and grown almost anywhere. We have wild grape here that grows on any sunny treeline. It just needs a vertical support.

Wouldn't even have to be as big. Small scale ones as 'artificial' trees.

Buildings covered in climbing vegetation have a natural insulation from the sun and cold winds. Just have to give it something to grow on so it won't damage the building itself. A building side covered in vines must have a CO2 uptake and O2 production of a small tree.

Flat roof gardens are the 'in' thing. Turn a whole building into a green living structure.

This is giving my tree hugger side a woody!

That's a place I would like to see if it wasn't in Singapore. I don't trust myself enough not to do something that the government decides needs a public flogging.

They are actually alien landing pads. You'd know this if you watched the docudrama Men in Black.

Well yeah that one but then I might chew gum or something. Too many pit falls to take the risk.

Someone could make money or a sex trade trip to Singapore for masochists. Just spit on a sidewalk in front of a cop and voila, sexual bliss!
