After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

Aldous Huxley
If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrel's heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence.

- George Eliot Middlemarch
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of -
Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there
I've chased the shouting wind along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up along delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
Where never lark, or even eagle flew;
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee Jr., High Flight

Silence ruled this land.
Out of silence mystery comes, and magic,
the delicate awareness of unreasoning things.

-- Eleanor Dark

Great quotes, LK...thanks

I've never read Huxley's or Eliot's. Here's the latest on silence that has profoundly affected me. It's from Lawrence Duller's 'Justine'; it's the last sentence in the text, before the consequential data and notes.

"Does not everything depend on our interpretation of the silence around us?"

Hi Cym

I haven't had the privilege of posting next to you for some time. I've stood back while the throng hugged you. You have been in my thoughts, and it's really good to see you here.:)

"Give me release
Witness me
I am outside
Give me peace
Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe that I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

Passion
Chokes the flower
Until she cries no more
Possessing all the beauty
Hungry still for more

Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe that I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

In this white wave
I am sinking
In this silence
In this white wave...
In this silence...

I believe I can't help this longing...
Comfort me I can't hold it all in...
If you won't let me...

Heaven holds a sense of wonder
And I wanted to believe that I'd get caught up
When the rage in me subsides

In this white wave
I am sinking
In this silence
In this white wave...
In this silence...

I believe I have seen you...
In this white wave
You are silent
You are breathing
In this white wave...

I am free"

"Without a wish, without a will,
I stood upon that silent hill
And stared into the sky until
My eyes were blind with stars and still
I stared into the sky. ''

First came the paradox that was unresolvable.
Then came the silence; they did not know what to say.
Finally, after nine days of blood letting, one by one they died.

And still, I wait.

Ever watch the Neon Genesis Evangelion series? It's anime... one Episode is titled "The phone that never rings."

More useless information from the beak of black bird. :)

No, Bird, I can't say I have. I don't know what animee is?

I have yet to see a useless piece of information fall from your beak, o beaky one :)

Anime - Japanise Animation. Pokemon is Anime... so is Sailor Moon and Voltron. You remember Voltron, don't you? :) Pokemon and Sailor Moon are both very BAD examples of anime - but they are the most popular here in the states. Voltron was just one of those things that were so bad it was pretty good - you know?

Neon Genesis is probably one of the best examples of modern Anime out today. It's a science fiction story line with biblical themes woven within. Deep plot, interesting characters, well drawn, well designed... If you haven't figured out that it's my favorite anime series, I've got hundreds of NGE pictures that proves it without a doubt. :)

Anyway - one of the Episodes is titled "The Phone that Never Rings." :)

[font=Papyrus,Garamond,Goudy,Rockwell, Perpetua,Times New Roman]"Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing;
Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness;
So on the ocean of life we pass and speak one another,
Only a look and a voice; then darkness again and a silence."

about noise...

"It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts."

~K.T. Jong

from: Silence

"I HAVE known the silence of the stars and of the sea,
And the silence of the city when it pauses,
And the silence of a man and a maid,
And the silence for which music alone finds the word,
And the silence of the woods before the winds of spring begin,
And the silence of the sick
When their eyes roam about the room.
And I ask: For the depths
Of what use is language?
A beast of the field moans a few times
When death takes its young.
And we are voiceless in the presence of realities—
We cannot speak."

Edgar Lee Masters

I need a time of silence and meditation each day.

our home, our common ground, our peace.
Silence reveals. Silence heals."
