For some reason I turned the dratted things on an hour ago and have been cruising around here with them on.

Some of them are, just,

They make me realize how different the climate of the Playground is to the rest of the forum. There's advertisements for threads in them. I don't really understand this. I can see advertising stories and poetry and personal sites and such, but threads? When you're already on the? I'm not trying to be critical, I would just like to understand why one would advertise a thread when it's extremely easy to find--unlike the poetry and stories that are in a different part of the site.

And the pictures! They're pervasive. And huge. There's one person here who has a signature that seems to be about ten inches long. Is this something that's enjoyable on the whole or is it just one of those we love him/her so we tolerate it things?

Personally, I keep them off most of the time because I detest sig lines longer than three lines of text. They get in the way of the posts. However, that's me and I'm just me. That's not everyone else. Do other people enjoy the sig lines here? Do they notice them or just skim past them? Do you even cruise the board with sig lines on or do you generally have them shut off? Why?

For your own sig line, how do you pick it? Do you think about how it works with the posts, or do you just think of it as an entity on its own? Do you like pictures in them or do you prefer to go without? How do you pick the text? Do you feel the need to advertise threads? Why do you choose what you choose?

For my own sig line I advertise a story and how to find my Lit memberpage. No pics, no colors, no embellishment. I rarely think about it, beyond to change the story, because I usually never see it. I prefer to keep it understated because I think it detracts from any post where the "feel" of the post is different than the "feel" of the signature line. I will make use of the "Show Signature: include your profile signature. " option just below the message text box when I think my sig line would be inappropriate to the post.

I'm afraid I number in the "sig line clueless" category. I seek enlightenment, not to be judgmental.

Hi KM

My sig lines change from time to time..but they have never been like 5 lines long..i don't advertise anything (i don't have anything to advertise)..LoL

My current one was created the other day..when all the bitching and moaning was going on about the gb vs pg..and i just got fed up..so i created that little statement, had someone "doc" it up and here it stays..it fits me as a person though..because i really don't give a fuck about pettiness and ignorance and lots of other stuff..LoL
I do have to say that some sigs "jump" out at me, if they say something of intrest, or are on the poetic level, but some sigs i just "skim" over because they don't intrest me..but like you said, that's just ME.

:)

I try to change my sig often. No matter how clever the sig line, it gets old very quickly. As for the long ones, especially with lots of pictures, I usually move on before they finish loading. Still, people express themselves through their sigs... and yes, while many of us crosspost, there is a definite philosophical difference between gb and pg posters....

Hey, Muffie! I don't usually post here, but your thread caught my eye.

I only have two things in my sig line. One is part of a poem that was written for me by a very special Lit member, and the other is a link to my stories page.

I'm with you - not a big fan of pictures. Especially not overly fond of moving objects. But then, they aren't my sig lines, are they?

my two cents worth...

i wrote my sig line...it defines a lot about me and what i seek...it's personal

i read some sig lines, and the ones that take up 3/4 of the page i just don't read the posts cause sometimes i'm not sure where the post ends and sig begins...but then maybe that's just my stupidity...some sigs are beautiful, some are insightful, some are funny, and some are cute...and there are big huge ones that are flashy...to each his own...and their own individuality...~smile~

My Humble Opion

I generally keep sigs and AVs on for a couple of reasons.
1 - My network connection is fast enought to allow it.
2 - I can pick up on who is posting by sig or av easier than finding the name usually.

IMHO, I agree long sig lines can be distracting, espeically when the post is one lien 2 or 3 words and the sig is the equivalent of 30 to 60 lines. I personnaly use mine so I don't have to sign every post. (BEM, The Bug Eyed Monster) Why type it over and over and over? I also use it to link to my writing home page.

For pictures some small ones are cool, for some animated ones or really large ones again IMHO, they can be distracting.

Why do people advertise threads? I don't know how it is over on the general boards but in the playground we frequently "loose" threads off of page 1. There are times when all of page one is active. You claim that finding threads is easy, I have to disagree. We have by default sorted by last post time, descending last 30 days and we end up with 10 pages of posts. Depending on network speed it can be a real pain to re-sort and look for a thread title or thread creator in the middle of the alphabet. Some people also like to put up links to their pictures and those threads can be tough to find.

In general I believe Lit has only the minimal basics of searching available. I really would love to see more options for searching, especially when searching for a specific person's posts.

Hope this helps,

BEM, The Bug Eyed Monster (Just in case you have sigs off.)

Hi ......

I look at Sig Lines....it tells me who is writing a story and where and it expresses the individual's personality with poems or quotes....some of the pictures do the same thing....it is a matter of choice...

Sig line?

I just dont have time. I type like a bloody snail.
''If youve got sum't t' say, bludy well say it'' my old man would say. It's what you say, not how you dress it methinks. :) :( :D    (mutters) damned stuff's just an embuggerance.......

:D I'm gonna follow you around lit just to hear that accent :D

I agree with you on..it's what you say, not how you dress it..
Some people are all dolled up ready to go to the prom, it's unfortunate that all that color and boldness isn't really saying too much..just my opinion..but if they like it..well that's all that matters right? right. :D
