So I got a 'sweet' bonus at work, and I learned reason #512 to avoid using your credit card

Reason 512: Because when you get a SWEEEET work bonus, the most reasonable thing to do might be to pay off your credit card debt rather than be young and stupid.

The choices were

a) Pay off the car
b) Pay off the credit card
c) Buy myself a HOPPING, SOUPED UP computer system.
d) Buy myself a nice flat screen TV and a cool stereo system
e) Blow it all in a titty bar (well almost all... buy the honey a nice little piece of *bling*bling*, take her out on a nice date, and THEN blow the rest in a titty bar with her).
f) Get hopping body kit for my ride, and MASSIVE stereo put into it.
g) Pay off the last of my student loans
i) Pad the savings account in case something happened.

It was a long and drawn out battle, but in the end seeing the $0 balance on the credit card won out.

*le sigh*

WORSE... the FUCKING ABSOLUTE WORSE... is I got a raise at work and a voice in the back of my head keeps saying "You don't need that money, why don't you bump up the 401k contribution so that ALL of the raise goes into the account. You just paid of the CC, that's a big load off your back putting some serious disposable cash in your pocket... that you should use to pay off the car quickly though."

So utterly depressing

Sincerely,
ElSol

Good work, though. It really is a fine feeling to see that $0.00 statement.

Every month.

It's the gift that keeps on giving ...

We'll see next month :)

Right now... I'm like "I got a bonus? Really? What did I buy?"

:)

Yes love, you are.

But you are one of the kindest gentlest souls I have ever met. :)

Now about my debt...no, it's just too depressing to think about. But the good thing about this divorce is that now I control ALL the money coming in.

I'm a firm believer in the credo, "If you can't afford cash, you can't afford it."

Of course being raised to think all the things that credit is required for, like a house, family and car, were things entirely beyond my reach helped as well.

Elsol, you did the right thing. Gets rid of a little nagging pain in your stomach. And you know that next time you get a juicy windfall (hopefully soon), you can go a little crazy, guilt-free.

Have you considered using one of those debt consolidation/cancellation services? They work wonders (trust me, I know from experience.)

That, or talking to your creditors.

Helen - (excepting the BT debt which was a load of bullshit) Debt Free and Happy for a 1 1/2 years :)

You did the right thing elsol. You know it too.

The only debt I have left is the house, and that is more investment than debt.

If it weren't for having a really awesome dead, I'd be floating in a sea of credit card debt, belly up.

Now, I have the opportunity to be pretty much be almost free and clear much sooner than otherwise.

I'm not sure how to break this to you, but . . . .

I think you might be a grown up.

But cheer up. It really isn't that terrible. Next thing you know, you'll be plotting how you can save enough to retire early and have some fun again.

Okay... fille...you're not helping.

!!!

You're suppossed to say "Yeah, but deep down inside, you only did it so the next bonus you can just buy something completely ridiculous... like...like...like... uh?"

Oh God... I am an adult!

I need to go beat off to a porno mag in the bathroom... that'll make me feel fourteen again.

Sincerely,
ElSol

I can't take the tv and dvd player into the bathroom with me, and if i did it on the couch I might stain something.

*GURGLE*

I think I hear the death cries of the little boy that once forged his mother's signature on a report card three marking periods in a row.

ElSol

So now you have a definite goal for savings or next bonus. A portable DVD player or a laptop!

No, no . . . . that's okay. You never outgrow that!

El,

How well I know that feeling. Think on this though, in a day or so you'll wake up and lay there thinking about the bills you have to pay and wahooooooo, that's one you wont have to pay. (Such a great feeling I know.)
