Just looking at his pictures gave me the heebie jeebies.

It's insane that his wife believed the "estranged" daughter was dropping off newborn babies on their doorstep. But, I bet if he abused his daughter, he was probably controlling and abusive to his wife as well. So, maybe she was either too crazy or too scared to figure out what was going on.

I've been reading the latest reports, and looking at the pictures being published of the inside of the cellar prison, and the hidden entrance.

He must have planned this for a while, the tiny 3ft. x 2ft. door into the prison is hidden behind what looks like a cupboard door, in the cellar.

My mind can't get round the thought of 24 years in there, bringing up 3 children on her own, their education, explaining why they live in a dungeon, and trying to tell them about outside.....I just can't imagine it. How on earth did those children feel when they exited that place and saw daylight for the first time ?

Mat your dumfoundness reminds me of what people said of the concentration camps.
It was the planning and organization as much as the scale of the atrocity that left people stunned. The complicit wife reminds me of the millions of cowardly Germans who actively helped in the holocaust and refused to speak up.

It's amazing to me that he kept her in that cell for 23 years. She must be so culture shocked right now. How could his wife not know though? meaning the toilet down there flushing or her rooting around in the basement at least seeing the keypad to get into the cell ...I know the cell was soundproof but shouldn't she have been able to here the toilet/water down there thru the pipes?

It was the THIRD case in Austria and the fifth in Europe since 2000.

I don't think it is an Austrian disease. They are extreme cases of controlling and abusive men. Austria has been unfortunate and possibly the only explanation that these cases were undiscovered for so long is that their culture is inclined not to pry into your neighbour's affairs. As long as you behave "correctly" = politely to your neighbours they won't try to find out more about you or your personal life. In any English (or Welsh!) village it is almost impossible to keep a secret because everybody knows about everybody else. In an Austrian village you would have to behave very oddly indeed (or be English) to be talked about.

However we're not immune. Think of the Yorkshire Ripper, or the Wests.
