A couple of weeks ago one of my stories had had 7 votes; today there are only 6!

Does anyone know how that can happen?

Laurel occasionaly goes through and removes fraudulent votes

How do one know what is what? I think I've had some nasties voting 1 on me beacause they didn't like me, not because they didn't like my poems.

I know exactly what happened to my stories on one occasion. I got into a "heated discussion" with some regulars on one of the boards. There were three of them calling me everything under the sun for writing BDSM novels for profit. Lo and behold, within twenty-four hours, all my stories had three more votes and simple arithmetic showed that they were all 1s.

I don't know the exact details of how Laurel determines which votes are fraudulent. Nor do I expect her to give a public explanation to help fraudulent voters get around her checks.

I know that the ISP (and userID for registerd voters) is recorded along with the vote so that multiple votes for the same story from the same ISP, or a series of one votes on all stories in a category or all of an author's stories that can be traced to one person are part of the criteria.

Malicious votes are harder to prove than fraudulent votes are. Sometimes low votes that seem like a personal attack ar just an over critical-voter who hates your subject matter or style. That's not "fraudulent" voting until they try to vote more than once on each of your stories.

Welcome to the club!

There are people here on Lit that I don't get along with, but I won't go and ruin their voting system just to get back at them - that's childish! I prefer the honest way of just calling people evil names in public threads...;)

Well, the world is full of morons...

Every reader has the right to make one vote on a story/poem. They can vote 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. They can vote for whatever reason they choose. They may give you a 5 because they love your story. They may give you a 5 because they're your friend in RL. They may give you a 5 because they like your author name.

So long as only one vote is cast, it's legitimate.

If someone(s) attempts to vote more than once, it's fraud and is removed.

As Weird Harold said, I won't explain how we catch these things. Frankly, as well-intentioned as discussions of the workings of the voting system may be, discussing these sort of things publicly is not in the best interest of the writers and poets of this site.

If you think there's something fishy going on with the voting of your stories, send me a confidential PM with the name of the story and I will check it out asap. :)

May I just say...

Svenskaflicka,

Just for the record: I wouldn't go as far as saying I dislike you, as I don't really know you. Some of your postings, particularly those directed towards me, have irritated me, but I will always let you know when they do. That, however, is never going to be sufficient reason for me to seek out your stories in order to give them a low vote. I am sorry if other people have felt the need to, as it does indeed seem extremely unfair and petty.

Charm_Brights,

I'm sorry that happened to you. In your position, without naming names, I would have aired my thoughts immediately in this forum had the same thing been done to me. Or did you? Not that it would achieve much, but it's just too hard for me to take somethings laying down, so to speak.

I believe everyone is entitled to their opinions, and everyone is entitled to air them in a rational manner. One of the most interesting things about this forum, for me, is the different opinions and views of so many intriguing people.

Have a good day now,

Alex (fem) :)

No. I ignored it, and them afterwards.

Oh, it's just like I told GoodGuy2: as long as people will just realize that I'm the greatest person in the world, and that I'm always right, and, preferebly, will address me with my proper title, "Your holyness", I'm sure we can all get along just fine... ;)

reminds me of...

a keychain I have

"We'll get along just fine as soon as you realize I am god"

Quoting Bill Cosby

A quote alledged to Bill's dad:

"I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it." Bil Cosby

Appropriateness to topic at hand:

miniscule.

No problem Your Highness.

'just watch where you go sticking that sceptre of yours. ;)

Have a great day now,
Alex (and B)
