The 1st chapter of CONFUSION by Jonathan Kellerman is maybe the best example of SHOWING I've ever come across.
Attractive woman at a bar, getting drunk, blowing-off the guys trying to pick her up. She leaves the bar, cant find her car in the dark, breaks the heel off her shoe, twists her ankle, falls down, breaks a nail, finds the car, drops her keys, crawls under the car to get them, drives all over the road, runs a light, runs out of gas, her AAA is expired, her best friend doesnt answer the phone, she walks, insults a Mexican who offers her a lift, and accepts a ride with a mature woman driving a Bentley who murders her at a cold, dark, lonely spot.
