I have nothing to offer here. Nada. But I do enjoy it when Sir_Winston and others show off the holy grail items and record-setting bargainfish they boated. So if you scored a gross of Hostess Fruit pies from 1992 for a song or found a classic Saved by the Bell T-shirt for 50 cents, then, c'mon. Show us what priceless works of culture you found in the ancient South American cave, Dr. Jones.

My daughter and I found an huge set of avon cape cod dishes for $20 at a garage sale. My daughter has been collecting that set for awhile, but only had a few pieces. Now we have four plates, a salt and pepper shaker, four goblets, a tumbler, and a cruet.

The salt and pepper shakers ALONE are worth $25. My daughter was ecstatic, and I was the good parent for about a week.

Are they really worth that much?

I have an entire honking set looks exactly like that (Avon deep red glass) that I inherited from my grandmother when she passed. My mother said she checked them out, and that they weren't worth anything.

Obviously you wouldn't get this much for them, but if you were to sell them you'd get a percent, cause the re-saler would have to make a profit.

In my daughters case, she started collecting them because she LOVES how they look.

This particular style is called avon cape cod.

Even at that I probably have about $1000 worth of stuff at least (Boxes and boxes of this dishware-my grandmother was a hoarder with lots of money). I wouldn't want to sell though. I like my dishes although storage becomes an issue sometimes. I rotate out a few pieces at a time to put on display.

I hear that. We have no intention of selling my daughters stuff, but it's really pretty and I was thrilled to get that much of it for so cheap. I was thrilled to have an extra $20 at that time, too. We see awesome stuff at garage sales all the time, but I normally don't have much extra money.

It's not that old, but this is a treasured item I found for my sewing nook.

This was what inspired me to start making costumes. My mom and I watched reruns of the show on Nick at Night all of the time. I was always interested in "Gone with the Wind" and Shakespear and other period things, but when I saw this dress, made the connections, and realized what kind of creative tallent and thinking goes into this type of masterpiece, I knew this was what I wanted to do.

I've been on the search for the song she did in tribute to the costumer. "It's a Mackie" or something like that.

Oh and btw, I found it at walmart for $20. It originally sold for $50 and is still going for $38+ so was a deal as well. Even if I don't usually like spending that much for a doll.

I remember seeing this particular show when I was a kid. I remember my mother laughed and laughed.

If I remember correctly, Scarlett (Carol) didn't have a dress to wear, but at the last minute she pulled the drapes (curtain rod and all) from the window. Yes, Bob Mackie was the costume designer for the show at that time.

I think the joke went something like...When he saw it, Rhett commented on the dress and Scarlett said something like, "oh, this old thing? I just saw it in the window and had to have it."

A Mackie Rag

Yes, I love it!

I saw something on PBS about Carol and Bob Mackie said that he struggled all week to come up with a costume for that scene, it came to him the day before the show. He called up the set design department and asked if they had any extra drapes and rod. *giggles* Just brilliant!

I can only hope that I become known for something as brilliantly done as that.

the Bob Mackie link in the post above is him explaining the whole thing. Here it is, again, just in case you missed it. Classic how they did that stuff, live.

my mum saved a rather garish plate from a skip a few years back. I sold it last month for £3,400. and that's £ not $

but most unusual possession is a bronze age celtic head mr trb found in a river. I'll get some pics of it later.

I love those. It reminds me of stuff my grandparents had – not the same, but similar. Maybe it was a major societal red phase – that I really thought was cool.

Um, really? A plate worth that kind of money and a ...*squeegies eyeballs* bronze age celtic head? What the hell is a bronze age celtic head? Because if they're down in the river, then I'm taking my head-panning prospector gear and Ol' Dorothy the mule and heading up into the hills and stake me to a claim to some head-pannin' territory.

It was a wedgewood fairyland land lustre plate. they fetch ridiculous amounts of money considering how hideous they are.

This is the bronze head. We aren't sure that it actually has any financial value. Apparently they used to have them on little piles of stones outside settlements to ward off evil. there is a small paper written about it by the local museum.

apologies for the frightful manicure, been polishing!

That's really, really cool. It looks almost African. So where did he find it? Was he walking through the headlands (sorry) or was it in a shop somewhere and he stumbled upon it?

And maybe I'll put an old action figure head on some rocks outside to keep evil away. It couldn't hurt.

he found it walking along the river Usk skimming stones. His first assumption that some hippy had carved it (this was mid wales in the early 80s) and took it home. He showed it to one of his dad's colleagues who told him to take it to the museum. They kept it for ages and eventually came back saying that it was a bronzeage head from one of the settlements from further up the river. over the millenia the river had washed it down stream and smoothed its features somewhat.

He had a bit of a tussle to get it back off them but they eventually gave it to him. there was a pamphlet about it, but it got lost in the move from Wales. Keep meaning to contact the museum or british library to see if we can find a copy.

We have some pretty neat little pieces of art, which I have no pictures of yet. My favorite is a sun wall-sculpture that matches our sheets AND our rug!

What? I like to match.

I found one of these the other day in a drawer at work.

Well, okay I was ringing and when the kid asked if we would take the coin to pay for an extra bbq sause I gave an enthusiastic "sure". I put my 50 cents in and snagged it before any one else could claim it.

It doesn't have a mint mark, so that means it's worth the least but it's still at least $7 for my 50 cents investment. :D

So we made a 330-mile (~530 km) round trip road trip yesterday to pick up her 6-year-old grand-niece. I was driving on the way back, about 3 p.m., when I spotted a yard sale sign alongside the highway, slowed precipitously and made the turn. (This is out in the boondocks of north-central Nebraska.)

She: "Honestly? At 3 o'clock, you're checking out a yard sale?"
Me: "Yeah, quickly. If we don't find it in one mile, we'll turn around and go back.

A tenth of a mile later, Me: "Oh, there it is!"
The first thing I spotted was a patio table, aluminum frame with plexiglass top, complete with umbrella:

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x95/Sir_Winston54/Picture003.jpg

Me: "Hey, honey? Whatchoo think? We *need* one... we've been *saying* we want to get one..."
She: "How are we going to get it (150 miles) home? The car's already packed!"
Me: "It looks like it will come apart easily. Just dismantle it, put the table-top on the roof of the car, tie it on - no problem!"
She:  "Whatever..."

She wanders through their garage, the 6-year-old finds a couple pair of Christmas reindeer antlers (headpieces for dogs and/or small children), she finds a full-size comforter and bed skirt that would just fit the bed in our guest bedroom:

The guy and I take the table apart and get it into and tied to the roof of the car, the 6-year-old is *given* the antlers and doesn't try to talk "She" into buying a couple of Beanie Babies she finds... so of course, She buys 'em

Table: $10.00
Comforter/bedskirt: $5.00
Fossil handbag (I never heard of 'em, but She was impressed ;) ): $1.00
Other stuff: $4.00

Total, $20.00. We scored. :D

Awesome!

I'm probably gonna buy this for my room:

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/fuo/1873145435.html

It probably needs some work, but if it's solid wood, like they say, it'll match my bed perfectly and be worth the effort. Then I can put my dresser in my daughters room, so her furniture will match, and we'll have enough dressers for when we get done with foster parenting classes and all the other stuff we have to do.

Thanks. I'm pretty pleased, I've been watching for something like that for awhile that was in my price range. Literally, I've been watching for years. I wanted it to look pretty much like that so I can keep my clothes in the drawers and the tv in the cupboard part, and close it all so I don't have to look at the TV when it's not in use.

That made me lol for some reason.
