Should States Adopt 0.5 Alcohol Limit?

The NTSB says so

100 countries around the world already have a 0.5% standard

Mothers Against Drunk Driving continues to favor 0.8%

Statistics indicate that 70%+ of all alcohol related traffic deaths involve a DUI at 0.15% or more

Food and beverage industry advocates argue that 0.5% will be bad for business

Totally social drinkers will refrain hurting booze sales, squeezing already tight margins and shrinking paychecks for wait and bar staff

What do you think?

I'm in favor of greater sobriety in drivers.

This is really a question about what level carries a legal presumption of impairment. Those who haven't drunk before can be significantly impaired at legal levels. Long-term hardcore alcoholics can be functional at astoundingly high levels. I worked an accident where the driver had come from the race track in Santa Fe down to Albuquerque before he wrecked, some 60 miles. His BAC was 0.66%, which would render most people comatose and many people dead. I had a guy who was borderline on the FSTs but blew a 0.35%. Twice. I couldn't believe the result the first time, and did it again to be sure. He was so used to being drunk, he'd learned how to compensate. He actually had more trouble standing up when he was sober. It was weird.

What I really look forward to is when the cars start driving themselves, and we don't have to worry about the humans.

Interesting that MADD are not zero tolerant. Perhaps some of them drink and drive a little bit themselves?

Unlike Australia, I've never seen a random roadside breath test in China. Have you ChinaBandit?

Personally, no.

Beijing TV and CCTV often run video opps of the Cops doing it though.

I'm going to have to watch more CCTV..wonder what the alcohol limit is for drivers here?
I've seen pics of rule breaking pedestrians (jaywalking and crossing against the lights) and newspapers publish offending drivers' number plates - for public shaming purposes I guess.
Sorry, slightly off topic..

We usta have an old boy here who gave the cops fits. He had one leg and no arms, and drove his old truck (standard shift) inspite of multiple arrests for driving without a license. The judge finally sent him to prison to get him off the road.

I usta have a client who had multiple arrests for DUI but never did any jail time, and just after I retired the judge closed his case tho he had performed zero tasks on his conviction order.

So I think every DUI conviction oughta come with a mandatory 30 days in jail spent washing SO vehicles.

People who are learning to drive should not be allowed to drink and drive. Full stop. Zero blood alcohol concentration.

The PRC's level is lower than 0.8% but I am not sure exactly what it is.

The Koreans have the issue very well sorted. They can call a designated driver to take person and vehicle right to the doorstep for about the price of a cab. Funny, if I spend a week in Seoul my colleagues end up doing this Monday thru Friday. It's actually an approved expense.

drunks are gonna drive no matter the number you use.

that's just fact.

but hey, let's get down to zero tolerance for everyone. 0.00 or you're drunk.

Do they blitz in the states?

Random breath testing?

I am certainly against drunk driving. However, we don't punish drunk drivers under the laws we already have (at least where I live). People here routinely get multiple DWI's with no meaningful restriction of their driving priveleges. The only time you get in trouble is when you finally kill someone, and even then. It doesn't seem like that gap between .08% and .05% is where the problem is. The people who cause problems are the ones who are multiple times over the limit.
Even thought this law is not in effect, I decided not to take my wife out for a cocktail last night because it's just not worth the hassle. So yes this is going to hurt bars and restaurants which are barely hanging on as it is. More people on unemployment.
Punish the trouble makers. Leave me alone. Thirty three years of driving without so much as a parking ticket.

What a load of bollocks.

People can drink the same amount as before, they just can't drive afterwards. Catch a cab. A train. Walk home. Drink at home. It's about being responsible.

What?

You know the difference between 0.05 and 0.08? Roughly 1 can of beer. That's it.

Think about it.

ETA: The OP, I hope you mean 0.08. Jesus :D

People are going to drink.

I personally am going to have a beer or possibly two with my Mexican food.

I don't give a fuck what laws you pass and neither do drunks.

Did you not learn anything from Prohibition?

No one is stopping you from having as many drinks as you'd like.
