I'm going to be spending some money on home improvements next month. Here is a list of things that are happening:

New roof
New furnace, duct work
New windows & doors
Inside woodwork

The "girls" at work are giving me a hard time about getting AC put in. I don't live in a climate that really needs to use it a lot and I kind of felt it's more of a luxury than a necessity. HOWEVER, it's fucking hot today and it would be nice to have on those seven to fourteen days a year where it's needed.

I have no idea how much extra it will cost (one of my coworkers said $1200, but how does she know?).

So how 'bout it, should I get AC to be used for just a few days a year or save my money????

Maybe I should add an option for:

If I get AC, how many of the lovely ladies of Lit will come up to da UP and hang out in comfort?

I can't write fast enough.

Oh, and 'draaah, you're probably only a six or seven hour drive!!

Ever hear of a heat pump?

It's a "furnace" in the winter and an "air conditioner" in the summer. Since you're going to get a new furnace anyway it might be worth looking into.

I've been told that heat-pumps don't work too well if you live in a climate that gets below 20 degrees regularly.

Winters here are harsh, 300+ inches of snow and we've been known to go a week and not get above 0. The heat is REAL important, but thanks for the suggestion. I still have to ask my heating contractor about AC, so I'll see what he comes up with as an option.

Regular or Decaf 'draaah? And don't you have homework to do?:p

I mix em up in the bag so I don't get too out of control.

Summer school is OVER, thankyouverymuch.

I live in south western Ontario {roughly the same climate as you} and decieded that AC was not worth the expense. You have to consider the price of equipment. installation plus the ongoing expense of higher electric bills.

I went with ceiling fans to rev up cool air circulation overnight to cool off the place.

Two points re. AC.

1. You cant live in it. Everytime you move back and forth your body has to readjust its climate setting.

2. Increasing your energy usage contributes to smog creation.

Anyhow if I had the money it would it would go elsewhere.

The house right now is not energy efficient in any sense. The furnace is older than me and about 40% efficient according to the contractor. The windows are drafty even with the storm windows shut. None of the exterior walls have very much (if any) insulation in them. They will after I'm done.

Why I originally didn't think of it was because with all the insulating I will be doing and the better windows etc, I figured the house probably won't absorb as much heat as it does now. Also, I like my electric bill being $29/mo right now and I feel that if I had AC I'd probably use it a lot and that bill would skyrocket.

The cost isn't really a concern. The place is worth more right now than I plan on spending on it (I figure with all the woodwork and carpets I plan on doing I'll be spending close to $30k). As for installation, they have to put in a new furnace and all the duct work for the heat, so adding AC now would be the way to go.

With the size of my yard and the soap opera I had to go through yesterday to cut it (that's a whole other story) I'm thinking $1200 would be better spent on a riding mower.

If you're doing all these major renovations, you might as well tack it on to the list.

Even if you don't often use it, it will increase the value of your home should you decide to sell.

Plus, if I visit and it's hot, I'll want the a/c.

Hot encourages less clothing! Cool or cold induces more.

That's hilarious...it reminds me of my boss at this bar I worked at, he'd keep the heat up regardless of the temp. outside so women would take off more clothes.

The sad reality is that it worked.

For me? I'd rather start out cool and work up a sweat, so your plan's a no-go.

Plus, think of the dogs.

I'll admit to spending far too much time thinking of my dog, but he's the reason for most of my decisions.

Well as an business major I have to ask you what is your economic gain of getting an airconditoner. Do you get $1200 worth of pleasure out of it. It might be worth more to you if the lovely ladies of lit come to visit you. as opposed to being a guy who doesnt mind the heat all that much.

So if your dog humped me would you hump me too?

go with the new roof that is the worst repair anyone cna have to do especially if it as old roof with rotting boards underneath....if it has only one layer...shingle right over the old one....save yourslef some cash...then go for the ac:D

Yeah, he's not looking like he's enjoying life today. He didn't even get up to go pick up the potato chip that bounced off his nose earlier.

The problem is far worse than I had imagined.
