Should I submit?

Hi everyone,

This is my second post on the forums so forgive me if I’m posting this in the wrong area. I’ve been reading the stories in Literotica for almost a year now and I’ve been tempted more than once to submit some of my own work. However, I’ve never had much faith or self-confidence in my own writing to let anyone other than friends read it (this hasn’t stopped some of my work from being published without my consent).

I want to ask the experienced authors here if I should throw my hat into the ring and submit some of my writing for the site. I know that the themes for my stories aren’t what most people would call the “norm” and I’m worried about how they might be accepted here. A mindless “you suck!” response doesn’t bother me, it’s the ones with legitimate gripes about my writing that scares me from submitting.

So, should I bite the bullet and submit some of the things I’ve written up or should I just hold back and keep my stories to myself? Is the community here open-minded/welcoming enough to accept a new author with rather different tastes? Any suggestions/thoughts/comments will be appreciated.

Thank you for your time. :)

Welcome to Lit! :rose: If you're confident your proof reading abilities to ensure basic grammar and spelling errors aren't too prevalent, then I say submit it! What have do have to lose? ;)

Luck,

Yui

As long as your story themes don't conflict with the "No underage sex," "No Snuff," "No bestaility," and no "rapist fantasies" guidelines then post away.

If you take the "legitimate gripes about my writing" in the spirit they're usually offered (even if rudely worded) and use them to improve your writing skills, you should do fine.

If you're concerned about your techinical skills, check out the volunteer editors and find one you can work with to fine-tune your stories before posting.

Welcome to the AH! Something 'different' is always welcome around here.

There may be readers out there who don't appreciate your themes, but there will likely be readers out there who do. If someone takes the time to provide their feedback on the quality of your writing, the worst that can happen is you might get a tip on how to improve. Don't let that stop you from submitting a story.

It's fun - give it a try. If you don't like the result, you can always turn off feedback or pull the story.

Good luck!

Thank you for the encouragement I've gotten so far! I'm less apprehensive about submitting something now (I just need to figure out what to submit). I do have a couple of questions though from one of the replies:

I have no problem not writing about bestiality or rapist fantasies. Not exactly my cup of tea. I have NFC what "snuff" is and I'm not really worried about it.

However, about the age thing. Is it safe to use specific age of consent when writing or should I accept a generic "18 is best" point of view for safety sake? I'm not implying nor condoning kiddie porn, but "underage sex" is a vague term.

As for constructive criticism, I'm all for improving myself (I just prefer that it be more along the "constructive" side than the "criticism" side).

Other than that, I think I’ll sit down and slam out one of the stories I keep in my head after I’ve applied for college. I hope to have something for you all to enjoy in the next day or two. Thanks again! :)

Hi Tryon,

Regarding your age question, Lit will not post the story if characters are under 18 regardless of age of consent laws. Either don't refer to age or state that they are 18 or older.

Gotcha and thanks for the speedy reply. :)

Never submit.

(Somebody has to take the opposing view.)

And I learned something new: having never read the guidelines-- old habits of a programmer-- I guess I just found out that bestiality is not allowed here. That means I'm going to have to write one of them stories, send it in, and have it rejected. As if I didn't have enough unfinished stories in progress...

Go for it Tryon!

And don't sweat criticism. If it's legitimate, it will improve your writing.

The person I use to edit my stuff I chose because I knew they would tear it into fine Belgian lace, fairly. They've helped a lot.

Submitting my stuff was one of the wisest things I've ever done.

It's impossible to know what to tell you when you just say that your stories don't fit the "norm". That might mean you write sweet, romantic tales with no sex whatsoever, or violence-filled underage cannibal stories.

Like everyone says, you should probably just go ahead and sudmit. I know it feels like the whole world's watching your first submission, but believe me, the votes witll amount to something like 1 for every 1000-2000 views, and the comments considerably less, and after 10 days the story will probably sink without a trace. The problem is not in offending people. It's in being noticed at all.

I'm another one saying "Go on, give it a go!"

really, it's quite a thrill and who knows you might even learn something from the experience :)

Hello and welcome...now go on Submit! ;)

Submit your work; if it sucks, we'll let you know.

You'll gain nohing from not posting, to be honest. What good is that?

I love the way you encourage new writers. It warms the cockles of my heart.
