Should I "Dean Koontz"

So I'm thinking about a story that is WAY off from what I usually write. I usually write fun sex stories with lots of hard core sex and this story will be a lot more low key, emotional and may actually have a plot.

So the question is: Should I "Dean Koontz" and write it under another name so as to not offend my fan or should I just plop it out there and see if he hangs with me?

Yes, of course.
Okay, I'm just being a Texan here, but do you mean "Yes I should submit under another name" or do you mean "Yes I should just plop it out there?"

Damn, I should have made the question a "Yes/No" thing :D

I understand why you might want to keep things separate but you don't hsve to.

I have incest romance hardcore bdsm group sex and fun stroky milf stuff all under one name. I have never had anyone say " I read your romance and then you blind sided me with gross incest stories"

Its your choice of course but mixing my vices has never hurt me here.

That was my subtle way of saying I don't believe in writing by committee, so you lost me at the "Should I . . . ?"

You're Lit library is small, so if you're leaning towards posting different material under various alts/pseudonyms, now would be the time for you to do that. A couple authors that post here in the AH have their alt names listed with links to those stories, too.

I've often thought the same thing: that maybe I should have divided my stories by content separated by various names. In a way, we're providing the reader of one story a service. Though, in my case, I think my readers generally know the type of story they like to read and will find it within my meager library by category or the little blurb we get to write.

Writer's choice, of course, with the added wrinkle that you can cross promote yourself if you'd like, too.

Thanks for the input. Hmm, still not sure what I'll do but you've given me food for thought.

Folk do it different. Some post stories under a name that's different from their social forum name. Others have different alts for different genres. Others, like me, post whatever. I'd plop it out there unless you're posting to LW and are concerned about preserving scores. :)

In my experience, there's (usually) very little cross-over.

Incest readers usually don't fav/comment on my bdsm or lesbian stories.

Vice versa.

My bdsm stories are read by a certain crowd, lesbian by a certain crowd, ect...

But that's generally speaking. Especially since incest seems to be a "love it or hate it" kind of category.

The plus side to keeping everything under one name is that you build a bigger fan base. Overall, more people will be reading your work. And that's the goal, isn't it?

I wouldn't split off a new persona unless you have a very good reason for doing so (the stories you're writing under that alt may one day be submitted for publication elsewhere and it would make removing them from here a simple matter, for example). As noted before, most readers will find the stories that tweak their kinks, and ignore anything which falls into a category they don't care for. If you wind up with some fans, they may be interested in everything you write, in which case they would miss anything you wrote under your alt, and you wouldn't want to disappoint them. :)
