With every year, overpopulation will take more of our dwindling resources, like fuel, water, food, while causing pollution and environment problems. What could help is we have less babies.
Birth control and abortion does help with that but perhaps the next step to that is to have certain men sterilized. The question is on what reasons should a man be sterilized?

Criminal record?
History of violence?
History of mental illness?
Low SAT scores?

Please note, this is not THE solution but rather A solution.

Don't be silly, even some of men are sterilized, the women still produce the same number of humans.

It depends on the capacity of women, not men.

Over a period of years, one man can knock up thousands of women. The thing to do would be to sterilize women. If 10% of the women were to be sterilized, the birth rate would be reduced by about the same percentage.

Yeah, this is what I was trying to say.

Go ahead to do it.

I can impregnate 100 women... but thousands sounds a tough job...

I don't know. More women voluntarily get their tubes tied than men get their v's. About 27% to 9%. Upping the men's stats would probably help, but it appears the men may have to be given some incentive to get their numbers up.

And who gets to decide this?
You?
The Government?
The UN?

are all those women shagging grade A men? or are there a significant number of grade E women who shag just one, sad string of E listers?

Unfortunately this was the policy of the pre-WW2 Nazi Party in Germany. It led to the Final Solution (of the Jewish Problem, but also included Gypsies and Gays).

The tried and tested way to reduce numbers of children and increases in population is economic development.

If people have more assets, they have fewer children to split their 'more' between. Better child health care leading to more children surviving infancy increases confidence and reduces the need to produce numbers of children only some of whom will survive.

Another aid is easy and affordable availability of all methods of contraception from condoms to morning-after pills, and ultimately reasonable access to abortion.

Unfortunately political and religious sensitivities reduce the availability of contraceptive advice and supplies.

But you can go too far. Japan has a birth rate less than replacement and the age distribution of the population is unbalanced. China's 'one-child' policy has led to an excess of males.

Sterilisation is not the answer. Compulsory sterilisation requires a state that denys its citizens any rights.

This is closer to the truth, at least in the developed world.

And the coming problem in the developed world is under-population not over-population. All one has to do is look at the fertility rates in the developed nations to see that.

Better utilization of land will seriously diminish ecological and resource stress.

I estimated that the small, built-out, congested, urban county south of me can handle 10 million people (1 million now) on half the land it has. Simply build mid-rises with recreational space at the top, industrial space at the bottom, and residential and commercial floors between. Then connect the sites by passenger/freight mono-rails. Afterwards use all the vacated land for recreation or whatever. You wouldnt need cars.

No, corporate America loves using good land to raise fuel crops.

That is why we need good green government!

Capitalism would not grow ethanol on its own!

You are still speaking as if over-population is a problem in the US and it isn't.

A stable population, no growth-no decline, is achieved with a fertility rate of 2.1 children per female. The US fertility rate is currently 2.06. The European nations are even worse off, they've been dying for decades now. Since the 1980's any growth in the European population has occurred because of immigration and because the non-assimilating immigrants have unusually high fertility rates. The same is becoming true in the US. The epicenters of outrageous fertility rates are in Africa, the Middle East, and South/Central America more or less in that order. (Number 1 is Niger with an average of 7.03 children born to every woman.)
