About a year or so ago I wrote a number of short pieces of erotica with a writing partner. I hesitate to call them short stories; more vignettes or scenes. I wouldn't say they were great, but I had fun writing them. My then writing partner wasn't terribly impressed by my pieces. He said they were too wordy and repetitive. I reminded him that he was the one that nagged me into writing with him in the first place, and that I'd never really done much in writing erotica. We quit writing shortly afterwards. I wrote a couple of short things after that but my interest in it waned. I think that I'm more of a consumer of erotica as opposed to a creator.

Whatever you produce, I hope that you may share some with the rest of us.

I would encourage you to give this another shot. You say you were having fun writing with your partner. That is very different from being a "consumer" of erotica. The act of writing with or for someone has an interactive, mutually stimulating element that you cannot get from just reading.

Based on your description, it sounds like your partner treated you very badly. He criticized and denigrated your erotic writing. I do not think it is stretching the analogy too far to say that this is like having a sexual partner tell you, after a few nights of pleasure, that you suck in bed. The act of writing together is a shared experience with a sexual element. It is hard to conceive of a less sensitive way of breaking off a relationship then criticizing your partner's performance.

To complete the analogy (and I think it holds up), you do not give up sex because a partner turns out to be an asshole or because the sex does not work for both of you. If you enjoy writing erotica, don't give up on it. Find a partner with whom you are compatible.

Satisfaction in Consuming

It's unfortunate that you had a bad experience in your efforts. Writing with a partner requires just the right chemistry and a certain willingness to relax on the "I'm gonna be a famous writer" front and embrace the "I'm having an enjoyable experience" aspect. Writing is such a personal thing to begin with that trying to force someone else into your formula seems ill fated. Hopefully, you have discovered authors here (and elsewhere) who satisfy, and you can simply read, read, read... and lose yourself in the moment

Thank you both MrMikelobe and Tofferman for your encouragement and elequent explanations. Perhaps it's not that I'm a bad writer of erotica, or anything else. But as you both indicated, I just probably had the wrong partner. Initially, I think I needed a partner to motivate me to begin writing, and perhaps I still do. Writing with someone has certain advantages, bouncing ideas off of one another, critiquing each others work, etc. That said, I may try some solo writing, just to see if I have it in me to complete something, as I wouldn't want to find another writing partner and find out I'm unable to complete something.
