I had salvaged his shipping empire by mere manipulations of rumors, buying and selling shares of Intercontinental Limited at strategic points,to drive the share price back up to where it was within 5 % of its liquidation value. It had not been simple, but I had assured my lifelong friend, Marcus Dupre' I would get it done.In return,Marcus was now telling me he had ordered a gift for me, and it would be arriving this afternoon.
Hearing his jovial laughter over the phone,I burst out also, questioning him as to WHAT the gift WAS.He would not relent, even though we chatted another 20 minutes as I described to him in detail how I managed to save his company, and at the same time, made money from my calculated transactions.
His mirth was infectious as he related an old sailor's joke to me,and though I had heard it many years ago,I roared out uncontrollably in the same raucus manner as he.It wasn't the joke itself,... it was the way he told it.My secretary,Eileen,a spinster at age 65,opened my door to check and make sure I was ok.
Tears streamed down my bearded face as I relayed to Marcus what happened.Seeing there was no difficulties, she gave me a stern look, closing the door, and retreated to her *Kingdom*.I knew she would not reprimand me on my conduct THIS time,...but she had in the past, when I had acted out of character before an auditor or some sort.
Saying our goodbyes,I cradled the hand set,and chuckled to myself, wondering WHAT in the hell was gonna be DELIVERED,...probably damned pizza if I knew my friend very well,...and I did know him well. There wasn't anything we wouldn't do for each other. One of those life long bondings that take place at an early age,Marcus and I had been through all the valleys and peaks together.
A soft <buzz> sounded, and keying down the intercom I heard Eileen say,"Mr. Tinded, there is a,...ahem, pretty young lady here to deliver a letter to you personally,...and she won't hand it over to me.She said it had to be given to you personally."I chuckled to myself and responded,"It's ok Eileen, send her in,she's got a present for me from Marcus."
Laughing out loud,I wondered to myself, ~Could it be a $5.00 McDonalds gift certificate~
The door opened and my heart leaped at the beauty of the woman who calmly closed the door, turned, and with head bowed, approached my desk.Extending a plain envelope toward me,the woman kept her gaze fixed on the massive oak desk where I sat,as I opened the envelope to read.
"Dear Art,............
Having read the letter,I knew it was no joke.Marcus had actually purchased this woman for me.Looking at her lovely face,I asked her,"Do you know what this letter says?"She replied,"Yes Master,I had to memorise it before leaving on the trip."
Hmm,ok,...Lets see how good your memory is, "Recite the contents of the letter in full!"
(I doubted she could do it,as Marcus had used some flowery words describing her attributes)
