In a far away kingdom, a girl without a mother and a distant father finds she has a certain ability. When she sings, everyone who hears it is lulled into a deathlike sleep. Princess Alyssa knows she must flee, she can only mask her voice for so long before diaster strikes. Her hope is found in a young stable boy who she played with as a child, he alone is immune to her 'curse'. They set off leaving the castle behind and setting off on a journey of a lifetime.
Characters we need:
Caleb: Stableboy who knows of Alyssa's gifts and helps her escape.
Phoenix: Young tribal leader
Salene: mythical witch of the sacred forest
Aurora: sleeping princess (wont be needed till close to the end)
IC:
Once Upon a Time....

Alyssa lay sleeping fitfully in her bed another nightmare had come to her in the early morning hours. A cock crowed outside her high window. In a flurry she threw the bedclothes off and darted to the window, the sleep haze making her believe that her dream might have come true, that the kingdom she would behold outside her window would no longer be. She had been plauged by dreams of destruction for the past 4 years of her life. She knew that Lycastis, her voice teacher would no longer be immune to her gift. Yesterday during her voice lesson he actually fell asleep and did not wake up until midnight, thats when she had masked her voice to her utmost ability. ~~~~~
Night fell upon the castle and the surrounding hills. Alyssa had skipped her singing lesson that day and her father had delivered rather disturbing news, she, Alyssa was to perform a song at her sister betrothal feast in a fortnight. She knew that she could no longer deny that her gift was getting strong. She needed to leave. She sat on her window seat looking out and up at the full yellow moon, imploring her to help, to show her the way , and what to do. A soft melody came to her, which she began to sing it was a song from her childhood, one of her only memories from her mother.

"Sweet child, you came into my life
And I made you my wife
You turned my world around
Wont ya write this down
Now I'm free from the sorrow
I'll be free come tomarrow
Now Im free from the pain

Love child
How i wish you didnt know
theres no place for me to go
She took your love away from me yesterday
Now Im free from the sorrow
I'll be free from tomarrow
And Im free from the pain"

She finished tears welling in her eyes, she thought she heard her mothers voice raise in song with hers but knew she was imaging things. She heard a gasp from below her and saw A boy, her age, tears also glistening in his eyes. "Princess that was..." Alyssa's hand went to her mouth, a small gasp escaping her lips."Caleb I.." She didnt know what to say but knew that since he wasnt asleep she could trust him. "Celab meet me tomarrow in the west corridoor library at the noon hour, " she looked to him, "Tis of the utmost importance and secrecy" With that Caleb nodded swiftly and was off, Alyssa latched her shutters and laid in her bed praying for the morning.

Caleb stared up at the rafters of his small, narrow room. It was in the loft above the stables; as a child, he'd been lulled to sleep by the slow, rhythmic breathing of the horses below. They were panting now, and sometimes screaming. Earlier, one of them had almost kicked one of the other stablehands to death before Caleb had been able to calm it. They felt something was coming.

He'd never been prone to panic, this quiet dark-eyed boy of the stables. Dreaming, yes, even dangerous dreams sometimes, but he'd always been calm, even-tempered. He felt something coming, though, too. He watched the spiders scuttle across the rafters, and wondered if they felt it too.

He thought about seeing Alyssa today, about listening to her song. He'd been used to being separated from her, just accepted it as the way the world worked. He'd thought to indulge himself, on that rare encounter with her, to just stand and watch her for a while, without revealing his presence. But she'd heard him and turned to look at him, and he'd seen the fear in her eyes. It was not in Caleb's nature to walk away from any creature in pain, let alone her.

Restless for once, he tossed and turned for a long time before sleep, and uneasy dreams, took him.

Tossing and turning ALyssa knew she would not be able to sleep. Maybe an hour the entire night she had some kind reprieve from the thoughts that tormented her, soon she was out of bed, a small candle lit in her vast chamber as she sat on the now enclosed windowsill. A small leather bound book lay open on her lap, her head trying to bring the story in and somehow dispell the look of Caleb's face from her mind.

For years they had been the best of friends, until the summer of her thirteenth birthday, when it was thought unproper for a princess to be seen with a stableboy, let alone what thought dwelled within the mind of a boy that age. So After that it had been goodbye bareback riding and hello sewing room. Once more her hazel eyes focused on the tiny black script of the book, knowing that soon it would be sunrise. She would take her breakfast in the library. Perhaps Caleb would come early, she knew there was only one solution to the problem facing her, and Caleb was one of the only people she trusted to help her with it.

It was easy for him to slip away from his chores that evening -Caleb was known for his reliability, and often left to work quietly alone for days. He slipped into the palace through the servants' quarters. Strictly speaking, he had no right to go beyond them, but he was used to the way nobles thought. Dressed in servants' clothes, with his head bowed down, he was all but invisible to them. The only risk was encountering the chamberlain, who would recognise him. He'd been one of those who'd made the decision to separate Caleb and Alyssa.

The passages were almost deserted at this time, however, and Caleb quickly made his way to the library. He'd never learned to read, although Alyssa had begun teaching him shortly before they were separated, and he frowned at the endless rows of dusty books that greeted his eye as he gently pushed the door open.

ALyass sat staring out the window, her back to the door. So consumed in what she was writing to actually hear the door open. With a sigh her hair fell losely around her face, something that almost never happened, always wearing her fancy clothing never able to let her hair down. The library was cold, but Alyssa wore no shoes. The rough wooden desk faced the window and she smiled as the breeze ruffled the parchment on the desk.

Something in that wind made her turn, and she was greeted by the sight of Caleb, her heart stopped momentarily as she took in how much her friend had changed. "Hello..." she said sweetly, fighting the urge to run and hug him. Very quickly she rolled up what she had been working on and pressed it away. "Caleb, I...I wanted to talk to you, I have a favor to ask of you, but I fear it not fair to ask it..." she said her eyes lowered, something she was taught to do only when speaking to men of higher rank, yet she respected Caleb enough to show him her need to help enough to set aside whatever pride he might think she possed.

After stealing one quick glimpse of the princess, Caleb kept his head bowed. He was uncertain how things had changed between them in the years since they'd last spoken. Then a surge of relief spread through him at her voice. Not cold, arrogant and imperious, as he'd secretly been dreading, but as warm and sweet as it had been when they'd first met.

He looked up. His voice was as calm and level as ever.

"I would do anything for you"

Alyssa stepped slowly towards him, a few feet seperating her from the boy who became a man without even seeing him. "I need to leave...I can't explain right now but..." her voice lowered to barely above a whisper. Slowly she reached out for his hand. "Caleb please help me to escape, if not I..." she stopped, tears falling from her eyes.

"I don't know, who else to trust..." she said trying to smile through her tears letting his hand go, afraid she had overstepped the boundries by taking his hand.

Caleb felt a rush of warmth when the princess took his hand. It was a painful relief when she let go, and he could resume his habitual calm.

Unquestioning, he replied:

"I can find us horses. But, Alyssa... where will we go? They'll be hunting us"

Alyssa shook her head, " I've planned it, the North forest...I have a suicide note written up to make them belive I jummped into the ocean..." she told him as she took the parchment out and stuffed it into the pocket of her dress. "If we are to do this Caleb...midnight would be best...we won't be seen, as the gaurds change...I know I am asking much of you but I swear I will find someway to repay you oneday..." she said embracing him tightly.

Holding him to her for a second longer then she should have. Letting him go she pulled almost entirely from his arms, lingering for a moment before looking deeply into his eyes. "Will you be able to get away..." she asked in a whisper.
