Just been shown again on British television last night. This is the second time I have seen it and yet my opinion remains the same: an over-long, tedious and gushingly sentimental slice of tosh.
I realise I am probably in a minority, but I just cannot see why (almost) everyone raves about this film on both sides of the Atlantic.

Read the book. It's much, much better...

Stephen King has been so much known for his horror (which I think is not as good as his early writing days) it is sometimes forgotten that he has written in other genres.

Shawshank Redemption is him at his best.

:D

A great, great movie. I watched it last night too, have seen it over a dozen times, and I love it every time.

I thought Shawshank redemption was one of the best films of the decade, I still do. Just because it isn't bang-bang, shoot-em-up, doesn't mean it isn't good. It's a thinker, a haunter, and it's one of my favorite movies. It's subtle, and powerful.

Another great movie:

"A Time to Kill" based on the John Grisham book of the same name. Still the best movie based on one of his books....

I admit that I also think that Shawshank Redemption is a great movie.

And don't forget The Green Mile when you're talking about great movies!
