Shaving Your Head

It really depends on the individual, their personality, where they're going bald, and their head and facial shape/features... when my husband started thinning, he decided to shave it all off (and it looks absolutely hot!)... my dad's answer to his hair loss was to grow his long and wear it in a ponytail (which looks good on him too, especially since it was only thinning in the back, so it was concealed well)... and my grandpa hung in there (which also suited him equally well)... however, with one of my sons, when the day should come that he finds a little less on the scalp, I would kick him from here to Timbuktu and ask what possessed him if he shaved his head (while, ironically, his twin would probably look good bald).

Again, it really depends on *you*. There really isn't a rule of thumb to follow. Go with what looks best on you. Just... no comb-overs or toupees. They just shout "HEY! Look at me! I'm going bald, but I'm trying to hide it!".

I could probably grow a ponytail, but would look like Darma's dad on the old Darma and Greg show. I always said I would never comb over or definately not wear a rug. I'm not that conceited. I have been clipping it close, but tonight shaved it all off. It's a lot easier and I just hope I don't freak anyone out.

My ex always kept his hair really, really short because it's naturally curly and can get really wild. He still has plenty of hair, but he started going gray when we were in our early 20's. Eventually he just decided to get rid of all his hair. It's a good look for him, particularly since he's a big, muscular guy who teaches at a rough-assed school that's often a last stop for future dropouts. The students don't fuck with him.

My ex BIL decided that he'd shave his head as well, only to find that his head was lumpy and irregular and he had a Klingon ridge!

Keeping it cut very short all over with no real style not only looks good it requires no work at all.

I've had my hair anywhere from almost bald, to shoulder length 'fro. I prefer it short haha

Just have a number one or two. I do mine once a week, you get up in the morning and it looks perfect. I used to have two feet of hair, but then it all got split and I was 30... I just thought, it's got to go sometime. So I did it. Now I'm going grey as well, so best keep it supershort.

This is what my partner does and it works very well.

I suppose it's a bit late for advice now you've shaved it but I also think whether you can get away with receding/thinning hair depends on contrast. If you have sandy hair and tanned skin it's less noticeable than if you have dark hair and fair skin. Most things we're self conscious about are less noticeable to others because they're not focusing on it. See how your new style is received. If you change your mind, it shouldn't take too long to grow your hair back to a short men's length.

Adding to what Velvet Darkness just said, I think people soon get used to it, and they forget what you used to look like before. I work with a guy who has got a bad bald patch (he's only 30) and blond hair, he kept shaving his head but then his nose (which is quite big) looked even bigger. Now he's grown a chinny beard and it balances his face and he looks fine.

I think every parent who has a son should shave their head at about 12 to 13 that way he can see what his skull looks like and when the time comes, know if it looks good shaved or not. My dad did that and my brother looked terrible but I look ok. Plus if you do it on summer break it grows back in time for school.

QFT - hence why I'd be shocked at one of my sons, and not the other... poor kid does *not* have the head for anything less than a close trim.

As for my husband shaving his head, he doesn't keep it completely bald. He'll completely shave it like once every couple months or so, but he'll buzz it once every couple of weeks so it stays anywhere between '5 o' clock shadow' and 'peach fuzz' length. That takes a lot of the maintenance out, but still has the same overall effect.

There is no denying how thin my hair is/was. I think with a lot of guys it is denial and I always said I would never try to cover up the truth.

Ive been thinking recently of doing the shaving thing but thanks to this thread I think Ill do the short thing for the time being since if it is cut real short I will then be able to have a better visual of what it might look like totally bald

I like to see you with a shaved head. I tried to get my GF to shave hers for a while now. She complains about having to wash, brush, fix, etc. so what better way than to shave it.

Shave your head! It feels better and much easier to take care of. Plus, you can save money by not buying shampoo.

I've shaved my head a few times for a variety of reasons... girls love it when your hair is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long... it feels like vellure when you rub it. It's definitely quick and easy... just be sure to keep a hat handy for the sun or cold temperatures (depending on the season/where you live).

Depends on the head. My husband was quickly balding so he shaved it and it's sexy! He doesn't have any gnarly bumps or scars and he has a nice shape. Some just don't look pretty.

But do what is most comfortable! If you are comfortable in shaved skin, go for it!!

...I started shavin' my head, 3 years ago. I had hair down to my butt, and decided to donate it to the loks-of-luv. I said I was gonna go from one extreme to another, and been shavin' ever since.
...I admit, shavin' every other day, or every day, when the need arises, is a pain, but other then that, its very easy to take care of. I wouldn't advise wearin' a hat, would tend to give your 'noggin' the pale look, after a long day in the sun. I wear a straw hat, occasionally, when in hay, or out on the farm, but other then that, I generally go bare on top...witha bit of sunscreen of course...
