Shark hysteria vs your your neighbor's pit bull

Dogs in the US bite 5 million people a year sending 750,000 people to treatment and killing 26 people (in 1996). Why the media frenzy over a few shark bites?

Same shit with airplane crashes. I'll take my chances swimming to an airport and getting on a plane to Singapore before I'd walk through a block of backyards and then drive through Atlanta.

In the year 2000.........100 shark bites world wide. 37 of them in florida, 12 in the same county where the last occurred.

I was swimming in the ocean on the day that boy got his arm ripped off, the same time of day, about twenty miles down the coast - and I was worried about the waves breaking right on top of me. *sighs*

The thing with airplanes, too... cars are more dangerous, trains too. People just bitch cause they're stupid.

ackkk airplanes......i am totally a white knuckle flyer, i hate flying, i have nightmares before i board the plane.......sheesh i think has everything to do with survival, if a plane crashes you are not walking away from it........at least on the ground you have a chance...........shuddering just on the thought of flying again

i like plane rides... *shrugs* then again i wanna go bungee jumping and skydiving, perhaps even without a parachute.

I always love to discuss airplane crashes right before I'm about to get on an airplane (or three).

Seriously though, WD is totally right about dogs being more dangerous than sharks, and cars more dangerous than airplanes.

Sharks get more publicity partly because it is such an unusual attack, and partly I think because of our horror at the concept of being eaten alive. Pit bulls usually don't want to eat you, they are just defending territory or being aggressive.

Plane crashes get more attention because of the large grouped death toll. Two hundred people could die in one day from car crashes around the world, but you would have to add them all up to figure that out. One hundred people dying at the same time and same place is a lot more noticeable.
