The American World Cup soccor team. The pride and joy of the United States of America. The World Cup hopefuls for the finals in Korea/Japan in three weeks time play Uruguay today in a pre-tournement friendly in Washington DC.
Despite playing at home the prediction is that there will be more Uruguayan supporters in the crowd than American ones.
Shame on you. Support your squad. Cheer every move they make. Applaud everthing they do.
Or do you want them to go down in soccer history as the only team in the whole wide world that had no support...
From today's NYT:
"The United States begins a final week of friendly matches May 12 against Uruguay in Washington, then opens World Cup play against Portugal on June 5, with other first-round matches scheduled against South Korea and Poland. The Americans hope to advance beyond group play, but for that they must score goals, always a mighty struggle.
The American men have never produced a breakout goal scorer, one as familiar to the general public as to the soccer cognoscenti. That could begin to change at the World Cup if Mathis, 25, continues to impress with his dexterous feet. A native of Conyers, Ga., he speaks in an antebellum voice, the voice of football, but also the voice of possibility and awakening. He has scored 8 goals and has 6 assists in 19 career appearances with the national team, including 5 goals in 8 matches this year. In one torrid stretch, he delivered a goal or an assist in seven consecutive starts.
Is Mathis your man?
